I am planning a kitchen remodel and considering Ikea cabinets. I'd like to get feedback from those who have purchased, installed and lived with Ikea cabinets. They seem so nice and affordable, but I don't want to go "budget." Thanks in advance.

my sister did her whole kitchen in IKEA cabinets and they are wonderful - it's been several years and she has had no problems, they look super and they are so nice and easy to use.

My sister purchased an older home that had been remodeled and all of the cabinets and fixtures (kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room) are from Ikea and it all looks great and has held up very well.. Her kids are now in middle school and high school, they have been there for about 6 years so they have gotten lots of use..

Leslie makes a good point. I have heard they can be difficult to install. I have a friend that is a interior designer and says it is worth it to have a professional, who has been trained to install them..

One of my best friends just remodeled their kitchen using IKEA cabinets. I saw the pictures and they are awesome looking. She told me that she wished she knew what a pain in the butt they were to assemble because she would never have bought them from IKEA. Something to think about...

Thanks for asking that question...we are on a budget and wanted to get the cabinets from Ikea, they are so nice. But yes we are terrified to put them together....seems very time consuming, and we are doing everything ourselfs..
maybe it is easier, to get them already put together, like from Menards and stain them, they have a lot of different stains.....

I had a kitchen Island made from IKEA cabinets and they are GREAT! I paid $99 for a consultant to come into my home and measure (he also recommended some places to look for granite - cheaper than IKEA). The $99 is then reimbursed when you buy the cabinets. I also hired a contractor to build and install the cabinets via IKEA - cost was about $500 for Very Large Kitchen Island and pantry cabinets. I paid $400 for a remainder piece of granite that matches my current granite through the recommendation of the consultant (includes: cut, stored till ready, came out to pre-measure, and install).

you may want to try lowe's in stock cabinets...they have different colors (we went with a darker brown, almost cherry color...they were in stock so cheaper but they were already assembled! plus we got them when they had a sale - like 30% off I believe - and their solid surface countertops also happened to be on sale...and it was this time of year last year I believe so they may be running a similiar sale.

Right now we are putting in IKEA cabinets in our kitchen. We were concerned too but they really are the best thing out there for a lower budget. We priced basic white cabinets at Lowe's and they were about $1000 or $2000 more without all the nice features IKEA cabinets offer. My husband is extremely handy though so I would agree it might be difficult if you are not somewhat of a professional. It still would be worth even if you have to hire someone to install them. So far the ones we have installed look great, I can't wait until we are all finished. Good luck!

If you have budgettary issues this is probaby the best bang for your buck. W ile assembly may be difficult they would then be done. Staoning and or painting is in my opinion more difficult unless you have experience and then to seal them and make sure no streaks, no dust while drying, even coloring and then the one piece that seems to have absorbed all the stain and is darker than the rest. Just make sure you seal seams with either a clear silicon caulk or matching caulk as most new not 100% solid wood(only really expensive ones usually are) and therefore are easily water damaged.

I have looked at Ikea cabinets and we have them on our short-list as well for a future kitchen remodel (still a few years down the road). We do know a family that did it and they love them.

I have to say, one of my best friends did her kitchen remodel with IKEA cabinets, and I thought they might look cheap, but they look fantastic! They're on their 3rd year, and they've held up very well. I've used her kitchen numerous times at parties, and they're durable.

****Update -in response to the other comments about them being difficult to put together and install -evidently they ARE! My friend paid the contractor who did her remodel to put them together and install them, but he said they were a B**TCH!

My 17 year old son assembled all the cabinets in our kitchen 2 years ago. The first one may be tricky, but the rest are easy (once you know the way.) I especially like having deep drawers in the base cabinets instead of the cave-like area behind the doors of our old cabinets. My husband had a friend help him hang them up-you just screw a rail along the ceiling, and hang up the cabinets from that. The only hard part is holding them up while you fasten the hanger. It would be hard to do on your own, but with a partner, it goes pretty fast. We replaced all the cabinets and installed their laminate countertops for @ $2000; it would have been well over 10 grand if we'd gone elsewhere.
