I had posted last week that someone has been using my debit card and has purchased so far about 1k dollars worth of stuff with my debit card (online from INDIA)... As of today the police and the bank have suggested red flagging my credit with experian/equafax/transunion... I did call 2 of them and it is all automated.... the last one (equafax) informed me that if I do it through them it will shopw up ith the other two... I guess my question would be... How long is it red flagged and how hard is that going to make it for me to open up a credit card (I am currently working on building up my credit score again) and or get approved to rent a house? This is just all happening at the worst time (go figure).... If anyone has gone through this please let me know... I am not 100% sure that they have taken it this far but I want to cover myself in case they do.

Red flagging it will mean that when you go to a store to open an account, they won't be able to unless they can verify who you are. You can remove it when you want to. I redflagged my credit some time ago becaue someone stole some info and opened a credit card in my name. Luckily it never really got anywhere and ID theft was not as advanced as it is now. When buying a house, you should be able to prove who you are with all the paperwork, etc. Easier to prove in person than by forms.

I both investigate fraud and manage an agency travel card program. I would recommend that you have your bank cancel your account number, then reopen another with a new account number. It may sound a little inconvenient right now, but at least you will have a fresh start up account. Now you know what not to do, you should be okay. In the future, when purchasing online, use a credit card with a high credit balance. If there is any activity you didn't approve, it is easier to cancel or dispute purchases. What is the difference between a debit card and credit card for online purchases? Although not 100% fool proof, a credit card is always safer to use. Especially if the credit card has a high balance, the card authorization should be declined. Another fail safe; you can predesignate a set spending limit to you credit card authorization by contacting your bank or go to your credit card web page and edit your spending limits. No one should be able to access that amount of money from your accounts. The most that could be stolen from mine is $500.00, however it can be recovered if it is a credit card. A debit card is more difficult to control if someone else has access to it. You should also get a police report and send a copy, with report number to US Secret Service or FBI in your local region. Both agencies (USSS has lead) investigate overseas and commerce thefts and in most cases, $1000.00 is considered grand theft. Contact your local United States Attorney's office for guidance.

Well as far as your credit, check out Farmers Insurance. We have Identitiy Shield. It is 45.00 a year to monitor your credit, also you should contact Janette Holland with Supreme Lending. Her number is ###-###-####. She is in Keller Texas, but she specializes in helping people get their credit scores where they need to be. She really focuses on educating individuals on their credit.

last my my ebay account was hacked. someone got my password (detectives working the case said it was someone with put a keystroke virus into our computer still not sure how but they said probably thru an online game my son plays) anyway they got thru both ebay and paypal. ordered big stuff and paid thru my paypal. thank god I check stuff all the time. but a seller refused to send the item anywhere but here so it came here. i opened it and found a very expensive pc of jewelry which had a receipt saying paid thru paypal. needless to say I did not order a $1500 dollar bracelet and neither did my husband. i took it straight to the police. an investigation happened. i had to close, checking and savings accounts (both tied to paypal) a credit card and both ebay and paypal. it has taken a year to get it straightened out. very scary.

the first thing I would do is cancel that debit card so they can not use it anymore.

this has happened to both me adn my husband. The first time, we were buying and selling a house. This last time it was buying a car. What a pain in the butt. You just have to be super vigiliant and make sure YOU are covering all your bases because the credit companies may not.
An examnple is this. We went to get a loan for this car last month (husband was in a wreck, we hadn't planned on getting a new car) and he goes to get the loan paperwork done. There is a flag on his social. So he calls the credit people and they say they've been trying to call him for months. He asks what number. It's a number we haven't had since October 2008 when we sold our last house. HELLO!!!! So now he has to take all these extra steps. Anyway.....what a pain. You'll get through it.

im red flag renting a house is no problem opening accounts is a pain in the rear. I go apply for a loan and forget im flagged and get denied call this number blah blah anyway if you use the same bank close your current acccount. I use the same bank all the time they know me and know about the id theft. so I don't have probs getting loans and such. because everything has already been proven to them and they know me by name but I am in a small town. it stays flagged permantly I believe but I have seen more than one post in here saying you could remove it to apply for loans which I didn't know till now and will use that.
I had it set up for me to get a loan that they had to call me at my dads house to verify. my ex husband is the one who did it to me. but I am going to have to change that since my dad has died.

I had my ss# stolen. It was a nightmare. You need to get the credit alerts with the 3 major credit unions. When you go to open a credit card or buy a car, rent ect. when they run your credit the alert will come up and you will have to verify that it is you and not someone else. It is very important to do this incase they have any other of your info. When you go to do anything with your credit just let them know what happened so they are not surprised. Usually people are pretty understanding. Would be glad to answer any other questions for you good luck and get those alerts asap
