Know that you're not alone. The average American household has over $9k in credit card debt. Almost everyone I know is struggling.

I highly recommend Dave Ramsey's book The Total Money Makeover. I work with a health and wellness company committed to helping people in ALL areas of wellness (physical, environmental, and financial) and we're reading this book together as part of that. Dave has some really radical and great points (I'm only on chapter 7 right now but he's making sense).

I am a stay at home mother of three beautiful girls (twins 2yrs and a 5mo) I looked into many different in-home businesses as my husband and I live on his teachers salary. I now work around my children and my husbands schedule approximately 4 nights a month through a business called Private Quarters selling the finest quality of linens, bath and spa items. This last month I brought in 1,200 to our family income! This was a company I did not have to invest much into starting this business at all! Within the first month recieved back what I invested as well as extra spending money for diapers and wipes! I have only reeped the rewards of staying at home and providing people with wonderful things for the bedroom linens and bath/spa.

I recommend Mary Hunt's book "Live Your Life for Half the Price", it has a ton of good tips and idea. Really made a difference for my daughter. She's been a sahm for about 9 years now. Mary Hunt also has a website it is www.cheapskatemonthly.com and is really useful.

I have saved quite a bit of money by going halves with cloth diapers and disposables. There are some good cloth diapers at wal-mart called Kushies (you can order them online and have them shipped site-to-store for free!), which are cloth on the inside and water proof on the outside. I got 5 of them for $30.00. I pretty much have my son wear them at home and then I put disposables on when we're out and about or when I don't feel like washing diapers for a while. I get my disposables from www.diapers.com; you buy in bulk so you don't run out fast, they are way cheaper than at the store, you can get free shipping if you spend more than $50.00 (and there are more things than diapers there too, there's diaper rash ointment, feeding supplies, etc.), and if you are a first time customer, you can type "MOTHER" into the promotions box when you check out, and you get $10.00 off your order.

Another thing I did was help a friend of mine with an in-home business by doing some paperwork for her, and I got free cleaning products as a result. She's looking for women who want to make extra money from home, and I really love her business model. The products are concentrated and you really save money with them, and they are safer than the chemicals you get at the store (I'm sure your little guy is probably into all the cupboards and stuff! These products are so safe that the FDA hasn't required them to use child proof caps!). I get their glass cleaner for $5.25, it comes with a sprayer bottle that you mix the product with water in, and it makes four windex sized spray bottles... that lasts me all year long!

Another way I save money, is by completely budgeting our grocery spending, and then we have things that we buy every time my hubby gets his paycheck. We stream right through the grocery store, get the regular items and a couple novelty items that we budgeted for, and then we DON'T buy anything on the fly. No impulse buying, nada. We've got our grocery budget down to $300.00 a month, and we keep it that way by eating healthier, no junk food, no empty calories, we make every food dollar count. :-D Buying concentrated juices that you can mix with water, buying bigger packages of meat that you can separate and re-store in your freezer, and buying good quality frozen veggies (which we steam to cook) are all ways that I save too.

Sure we have ideas, lol.
=On the back of each product is a phone number/website for questions and coments. Call or write, ask to be put on the mailing list, and you can get coupons directly from that company. Pick products you use often as your time is precious too!
=Check out crafting sites to see if you could make somethings at home to sell at bazars and such for your special occasion money.
=Do a websearch for frugal living- lots of sites! And for anything in your area, garden clubs, co-ops, ect.
=Buy whole milk and half the gallon with water, viola 2% for half the price.
=Good investments are - a sewing machine (blankets and such are easy and fabric is commonly found at 2nd hand stores), a chest freezer (good deal? stock up!), energy efficiant appliances.
=Find all the clearence aisles at your stores and shop there first. I shop birthdays 2+ months in advance and Christmas starts January 1st! I have a special closet shelf for these things and a few extra great deals just incase I have forgotten something or we have a kids b-day party when money is tight.

Sometimes local MOPS groups and bible study groups will pay for childcare during meetings and you could have your child with you. Contact the groups in your area.

First I would like to say I was just in the same position. We needed help this summer and were on a very tight budget.

So here are my suggestions...I got a very part time job at the local Albertsons. I was the baker in the bakery and my hours were 4a-8am. I know that it sounds terrible and it was but you got to do what you got to do. That way I was home at the time my hubby had to leave work. He tweaked his schedule and asked if he could work 9a-6p instead of 8-5p. It wasnt very much money @$130 a week but that was our grocery money, which helped out Hugely. Once a week shopping and it pains me to say this but we shopped and still do at the walmart for food. It is so cheap if you get the generic stuff, which surprisingly some of it isnt that bad. I am or was I should say not a generic girl so this was hard for me and took some real getting used to. We are a family of 4 but sometimes 6 or 8 depending on nephews and step kids and we came up with good healthy meals.
They have great deals on bags of frozen chicken breasts for $5.00! You can do enchiladas, soup, all sorts of things with chicken, if you need any recipes I would be happy to share. They also have 50 packs of diapers for $10.
It sucked for us all this summer but my hubby got a raise and slowly it is getting better. We are still not out of the woods yet but if you and your hubby try to laugh about it, it makes it easier...we did!

I cant wait till I can afford the expensive great smelling laundry soap and fabric softner again:)! It is amazing what you learn about yourself when you really have to sacrifice.

I am sure it goes without saying but we cut out any un-necessary shopping, or eating out!

I know exactly how you feel. I have been a SAHM for 2 1/2 years. Money is very tight with my husband being the only income available. Here are some things that I do that may help you out. First Sunday paper...COUPONS! If you use diapers, formula etc. You can go to their websites and sign up for coupons also. Shop Goodwill for good deals on gently used clothing. Watch your favorite grocery store for their weekly ads and buy on sale when you can. You can also sell things on Craigs list or ebay. Instead of having a yard sale this past summer I sold on ebay and made much more money than I would of at a yard sale. Just find things around the house that are in good shape that you no longer use or want. I also sell Mary Kay cosemtics, which is great for extra spending money for birthdays and Christmas. Hope this helps yoou with some other ideas. It can be tight but so worth it!!!! Good luck!

I don't have much to say after the great suggestions already made, but I would like to add that car insurance is often one of those things we don't think about as an added expense. You should definitely look into Wawanesa.. their number is 1-800-438-4300. They are the best company I have ever had. They even covered me in an accident when I was late on the payment!! And they cost me half as much as I was previously paying with Progressive {and Progressive was cheaper than anywhere else for me}. So I just wanted to give you a heads up :) Could save you alot of money.. it's saving us $90 a month.

M., I completely understand how you feel. My problem, is that I have to work full time outside the home and send all three of my kiddos to daycare. My cousin did the same with her 6 kids until she found Arbonne International. After 4 months she quit her job as a real estate agent and only does Arbonne. She's able to work from home and when she does have a presentation, it's when her husband is at home for the kids. She makes about 9000/month and I currently make between 700/1000 a month, still working full time, from Arbonne. Another good idea is http://www.freecycle.org You can post for things on there like clothing for your little one or you guys and whatever other things you might need (diaper coupons). It's also a great site to get rid of stuff you have laying around that you don't want but don't have the time to take it to Goodwill or just want to give away and not want in the land fills. One person's junk is another's treasure. Another thing that I did when my kids were little is sell their old clothes that weren't stained and I didn't want to keep on Ebay for a little extra cash. Just a couple ideas. Hope that helps!

I don't know if this would work for you but I volunteer at a local food bank once a week. They let me bring my daughter with me. At the food bank there is always food that will just get thrown away if no one takes it so they encourage me to help myself. Now that money has been tight I've been going thru the whole line like everyone else but even if you aren't comfortable with that you can usually get unlimited bread and some produce. Also have you heard of freecycle.org? There is one here in Bothell. People post things that they are getting rid of and they can be things that you need like baby clothes etc. There is no charge. You just sign up and you'll start getting emails from members who are looking for a home for their stuff. You can also post requests for something that you are looking for. Craig's list has a "free" section too so I check them every so often.

You could watch another child. Just one would give you about $450 a month (full time). I can help you with that if you want.
