Ideas So How to Get Out This Funk?

I worked for the same place for almost 14 years. In February they told us they had decided to restructure and do away with over 60 positions at the end of May. I am starting to get so very frustrated. I have applied for numerous jobs and gotten a few interviews but have not been able to land a job yes. I have been trying to stay active with my husband and kids with their activities that they have going on. But don't get to do much since my car is messed up and no extra money to do stuff. I have started to get in a little bit of a funk on the edge of depression and need to pull out of it and not sure how to. I can't go to the dr for meds for depression as I have no insurance. Please any words of encouragement would be appreciated!!! Thank you.

So What Happened?

I do get unemployment but it's pretty much just enough to pay bills and have food. I have a 15 and a 12 year old and they eat way too much. I am trying to apply for every position I feel I can do. Unfortunately ones that require standing for long I can't do because of physical restrictions. I am sorry I was unclear. I try to keep busy with them but when my husband is at work doing anything is hard because my car is in bad shape and needs to go to the shop. Unfortunately it is past the time that I can be added to my husbands insurance. It was going to cost too much to add me.
Thanks for the encouragement. I am going in tomorrow to meet with a temp agency. They have a position in my area so hoping that pans out. My job ended May 30th, 2014.

What can you do well to work at home? Babysit? Bake cakes? Bake cookies? I am good cook, but cannot bake worth a damn.

So, if a neighbor handed out cards saying that she was opening an at-home bakery for the meantime--I would be a weekly customer for gingerbread, pumpkin bread, teacakes, brownies...

H.,
You are in TX and our economy is booming right now.

My suggestion is to sign up with a temp agency. When I was in corporate marketing, we hired everyone from the temp pool and no one from the "outside". This company still hires this way today. It is a great way to "test" companies out to see if you might like it and if you are a fit and it is also a good test for the company to see if you are a good fit for them. Don't limit yourself to specific opportunities.... be open minded. This can get your foot in the door and although it might not be immediate, you can still get a good job this way.

Also use word of mouth. You never know if a friend of a friend may know someone who is looking for someone and bam.. your name comes up!

In the meantime, get your resume up to date. Get a LinkedIn account (FREE) ! It is a good networking tool. I get resumes from people weekly and I get requests from recruiters weekly as well. Great spot to network.

Right now, there are numerous seasonal jobs posted everywhere. Sometimes a seasonal hire ends up being a permanent employee.

I don't know if you are on unemployment or not but go to the TWC and check out the resources they have available for searching for work, interviewing, resume help and job postings.

Don't beat yourself up about it. In the meantime, use your time wisely to network, exercise, volunteer at your children's schools (another opportunity). Establish a daily routine where you get up and out every day. Go walk and clear your head.

You can get through this rough patch. Best wishes.

sweetie, it doesn't take money or a car to 'stay active', and you are right in thinking that activity might help. nothing like a brisk walk to blow away the cobwebs.
but if it's clinical depression, a walk won't do much. unfortunately the discussions over depression have sort of polarized it into 'get active' OR 'get medicated.' it's really not one or the other, as there is situational depression which can be helped with attitude, meditation, activity, diet and attitude, and clinical depression which needs more, ie medication and therapy.
it sounds as if yours is situational, and i hope that's the case. and if it is, then indeed get out and 'do stuff' whether it's with your family or not.
you need to have some sort of medical care whether it's under your employer's health plan or the ACA. have you applied?

I'm sorry you are going through this.

What does your husband do? Does he not work? Are you not collecting unemployment or is it going to keeping the house and food on the table??

With the Holiday's here? I would apply for a seasonal position at one of the retail stores and get money in the door. Hopefully, it would be enough to get your car fixed.

Find out if there are people you can barter with to get your car fixed???

You CAN do this. You WILL get through this.

Good luck!!

I'm really sorry you are going through this. In 2011, the company I was with told me I had 30 days to find another job within the company or I was going to be let go. 30 days. This was also just one year after my husband was unemployed for 5 months. I know the stress that comes with unemployment - but you CANNOT let it eat at you.

Take control. Now. Get a Monster.com, LinkedIn, CareerBuilder.com, etc account. Hand deliver your resume to companies you want to work for. Apply at Old Navy, McDonalds, Target, wherever...you WILL make contacts at those jobs that may get you something more along the lines of what you are looking for.

Are you sure your position is one being let go? Even if so, you have almost a year before that happens!! Stop stressing about it now. Interview like you don't need the job, but the job needs you - it will boost your confidence and make you more desireable.

Does your current company have an EPA? If so, call! Or go to a church and talk to a pastor - free.

I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm confused by your post. Why don't you get to do things with your husband and kids because of your car. Aren't you all going in one car or all taking a bus or all walking? If it's an activity they are doing, they are getting there somehow, whether a car or not, so how does your car prevent just you from participating?

Are you collecting unemployment, or at least visited their office? They should have a lot of resources for finding employment. And maybe even some group or counseling ideas for job loss and starting over in the job search arena. Check them out!

And being aware of your feelings is so important. You aren't letting it get to you too much. Keep getting up in the morning, have a plan and execute it. Good luck!

I am sorry to hear of your layoff... in times like this you have to rely on your faith. Trust that you are exacly where you are meant to be and know that something better is coming your way. I say that because I too was laid off of a job that I had worked for 10 years...and thought the worse but it was actually God positioning me to be exactly where HE wanted me to be. You will find another job just think positive!! God Bless!

One of the best things is to exercise. Just go for walks. Lots of them. Every day. It clears the head & produces endorphins.

Next, find a way to talk w/a professional. Google "psychologist on a sliding pay scale" in your area. Even if you only go to 1 or 2 appts., it can
help & they can provide professional insight/helpful tips.

Do you belong to a church? You could try talking w/your pastor/priest etc.

Keep applying. It's a numbers game & eventually something will come of
it.

Also, look at your resume. Really look at it. Make sure it is at it's best
(professional, concise, highlighting ALL of your strengths, not too wordy,
lose extraneous stuff you don't need to include).

Look outside your normal realm for jobs. Think just outside the box.

As far as your car goes....until it's fixed or you can afford to fix it, try looking at things very close to you, look into taking the bus etc.

Make a list of 10 things you are extremely grateful for in your life right now. Keep it handy (your purse) & pull it out often.

Sell, try to get rid of things around your house right now (garage sale,
Craigslist) to make extra money.

Call your cable company to see how you can lower your bill.

Try to do one fun thing for yourself each week (taking your husband's
car)....smthg cheap....going to a nearby outside mall to walk around but
not buy anything, a park to walk around with, rent movies from the library

Don't allow yourself to fixate on the negative. When you find yourself doing that, think on the parts of your life you are grateful for. Gratitude is the solution to negative thinking.
Also exercise, even just a walk, will produce endorphins.

Two things I believe will help tremendously.

1. Exercise
2. (read) Reposition Yourself by TD Jakes or check it out on YouTube.

In my husband's field of work he often finds himself without work but he always finds a new job. He is always looking for work. When he is unemployed his job is to find a job. He told me he applies to at least 5 jobs a day. He tailors his resume toward that particular job using the words found in their advertisement for the job.

Did you know there are computer programs that help those in HR (Human Resources) weed through resumes by looking for key words?

Having a new point of view and releasing that angst through exercise will really help you.

Your husband could add you to his insurance if he has some with his job.

The more jobs you apply to the more likely you are to land an interview. You just need one job to say yes. It's really a numbers game. The more you search the more likely it is for you to find what you are looking for.

You may also consider if your skills translate into other opportunities and not just the job you just finished doing. You may need to take a class and gain some new skills and contacts. Volunteering is also helpful but choose wisely. It should be about helping others and gaining some new skills or improving the skills you already have.

I hope this helps. I pray the best for you. I used to suffer from depression but when I exercise it clears my brain and really helps me to focus and improve in every way.
