Hi Mamas,

We are wanting to take a vacation this summer.
We will be leaving from the North Dallas area and only want to travel maybe around 4-5 hours by car because we won't have a lot of vacation days so we want to get to the destination in a fairly short amount of time.
We've done Port Aransas before. That was a lot of fun, but a little bit farther than we're looking for. We'd also like to do something new. We wouldn't mind heading north since it will be some of the hotter days in the DFW area and going North we might get a little bit cooler weather.
We usually go farther for our summer trips from the DFW area - like Pensacola, Branson, MO, Virginia and IL (family)...shorter trips have been to Galveston and Little Rock, AR....I'm wondering if OK or AR has some neat vacation areas?

Where have you been within this geographical area for vacations that you really enjoyed?
Ideas?

Thanks much!

Get on I35 heading South.

Stop in Austin to see the Capitol, The LBJ Library, Visit Zilker Park ride the little train, and swim in Barton Springs and eat at least one meal from a food truck.. There are also lots of free family things going on in Austin, so check online.

Along the way.. Stop in New Braunsfels and go to Schlitterbahn the original Water Park of Texas. Eat a German meal .Maybe try to get by Gruene Hall, one of the oldest Dance Halls in Texas..

San Antonio is lots of fun. It is so different from any where else in Texas.. The historical Alamo, The the fun of Sea World. Fiesta Texas, ok I know it is Six Flags, but it is a bit different. And make sure you spend a couple of days at the La Contera Resort. I have only heard wonderful reviews. http://www.resortlacantera.com/

Fellow Texas gal here! Why not go to one of these resorts on Lake Texoma or Hot Springs Arkansas? Hot Springs has fishing, hiking, trails, Magic Springs (kinda like Six Flags and the water park), horse racing and casinos. If you venture out that way, stop off in Mt. Pleasant on I-30 and have Bodacious Bar-be-Que or Two Senoritas! Have fun!

Look into cruises out of Galveston. There are probably a few short ones.

Have fun whatever you do!

Depends on the ages of your kids but OK City is pretty cool. You can see the bombing site and they have a really cool river walk area and a minor league baseball team. Tulsa would have some fun stuff too. Happy Travels!

We like San Antonio. Lots of cool things to do there! I have never been before but have heard good things about schlitterbahn in new braunfels(sp?) they have tree houses. Last year we were thinking about going to Rio Frio. Google it, they have hotels right by the river you can swim in the hotel pool and tube/play in the river. We decided our kids were too young though.

We like going up to Durant, OK to the casino. I know it sounds crazy to take kids to a casino but the pool area is FANTASTIC. There is a baby pool that is just inches of water, a kid pool with a slide, a regular pool that most people use, and the adult pool that only 21 and over are allowed in. We will rent a cabana for the full weekend we are there and spend all day by the pool, then alternate evenings one of us with the sleeping kids and one of us playing in the casino. Last year my parents came too so we were able to alternate who babysat and who played in the evening. And the best part is it in only an hour and a half drive from our house.
