Ideas Appreciated! Need More Uninterrupted Sleep!

My son doesn't like to sleep (especially in the crib by himself). He is 10 months old and we never had any problems until we moved him from the pack and play to the crib a few months ago. He is a VERY restless sleeper and wakes up often. He loves to cuddle (especially when he's sleeping). When he wakes up, he cries because he wants to be near someone. We have tried to let him cry it out (he will cry for HOURS, literally) but this just isn't an option. I have thought about putting a big stuffed animal in the crib for him to cuddle with but worry about SIDS. All he really wants is someone to sleep up against. Any suggestions....I am expecting my third child in 2 months and need to get this one sleeping before the new baby arrives (or I may never sleep again). Please help! Thanks in advance!

P.- I am a mother of 5! And my oldest daughter that is 15 months went thru the ssame thing. I found the most AWESOME pillow in the world its called a "Noodle Pillow" and its a really thin long pillow that I have put in her crib. And after we cuddle and she goes to sleep I put her in her crib and adjust the pillow around her like they do in the NICU. Just where it touches her on both sides but leave the space by her head open. ( No suffication) Works really well!

HI P.
I would not worry about SIDS from a stuffed animal- your baby will not smother. I think it is a good idea for little ones have something to cling to in the crib- a really soft blanket and stuffed animals are good. They give them the security they need while sleeping and cuddling.
good luck and blessings

At 10 months, SIDS is no longer a real concern. Wear a t-shirt for a couple of night and do not wash it. Then, get a large stuffed animal about the squishiness of a person and put the shirt on the animal. Put that in his crib and see how that goes. He will have your smell and something to cuddle with.

Good Luck!

My doc said that my daughter can have a stuffed animal in her bed now and she is also 10 months. I think at this point, they are past the SIDS stage. As long as he can roll over and sit up, then you shouldn't have any problems. I wouldn't put a big animal in there. Just a little one for comfort.

I would definitely go ahead and give him the stuffed animal, just make sure there are no small parts that he could rip off, etc. and a firmer animal, as opposed to mushier, is better. You probably already have this, but I would also make sure there is a crib bumper. My daughter likes to bury her head in the corner of her crib bumper. I had no idea she was so attached to it until I had it in the wash one day during her nap. Hello! Won't do that again. Poor thing could not sleep at all. Lastly, The No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley has lots of great ideas. Hang in there!

I read SIDS is a concern for even kids as old as 3. Please consider other options like a small lightweight blankie instead of a stuffed animal.

The crying out method takes more than a day or two to work. If you try it again, give it at least a week or two.

At 10 months, you are past SIDS. Give your son the stuffed animal. There are also blankets for children with animal heads on them. I cannot remember what they are called. My niece slept with one for years.

Also make sure to have a real bedtime routine. Do not treat it on his schedule depending on him to be completely exhausted, that will just cause him to be over tired.

I put a pillow from our bed in his crib and my son would curl up on top of it.

our doctor told us that at a year our son no longer needed a bottle durring the night. (so at 10 months we were giving him about one a night). the CIO method isnt intened for hours but more like 10-15 mins and if your kid goes back to sleep great if not then most likely he actually needs something. heres some things that really helped us get a full nights sleep. white noise maker, black out shades, very little light only enough to see to walk around with, also keeping his temp cool. i was one of those mommas that wouldnt let our son have a blanket or anything in the crib at all due to sids. the pedi said a light weight blanket was ok. at one year i began testing out letting my kid sleep with a curious george durring nap time. (by 10 months i think he was down to one nap a day which also helps full night sleep) the small stuffed animal is his security blanket. he now sleeps with a duckblanket (duck head and blanket in one very small) and a regular blanket with george! i wouldnt do a large animal either. good luck hope you find your answer...i promisse you will sleep again...or untill your next one comes along. Congrats!
