HI C.
how are you?? I'm sorry to hear you may be going into labor prior to schedule. hopefully if you keep yourself as relaxed as possible you can hold off for another few weeks, at least. About the breast pump...have you tried talking to your caseworker about the situation? Also...you may be able to rent one at the hospital and get it tacked onto the hospital bill, which I assume medicaid is covering. Any way you go, you should definitely be able to get medicaid to take care of it. you will probably need some sort of verification from your doctor saying that you have gone into preterm labor and that if the baby does come too early, breastmilk will be most beneficial for her. I think its so great you want to breastfeed! It would be so wonderful for your little girl to get the added immunity, etc..from your breastmilk, especially if she's early. My best advice is to call the medicaid office, or your caseworker to ask what you can do. If medicaid cant help, I'm sure you can contact Healthy Start in your area. I gave birth in Gainesville, so all the numbers I have are for the Alachua county area. I'm not sure where you are, but if you are close and want me to send you the numbers, let me know. Off the top of my head, the health dept., where you can reach a Healthy Start rep is ###-###-####. I hope something in this is helpful! I know its kind of rambling.
Good luck with everything!
A.

Have you checked with the hospital? Some of them actually have their own programs. Send me a personal email and maybe I can help you figure something out.

go to your hospital and they should have an office to get emergency medicaid. they will give you a piece of paper with your information right then and there to take to your doctors appointment. i had 2 of my three preemies, one at 34 weeks and one at 30 weeks. i wish you luck, you will need it.

WIC will assist you with this. Call your local health department and make an appointment ASAP. Make sure you tell them your situation so that you can get the earliest appointment. Good luck, and God bless you!

I was on medicaid when I had my daughter three years ago. Unless things have changed since then Medicaid will NOT pay for the purchase of a breatpump or even a rental. My daughter had to stay in Neonatal intensive care for a week after she was born and since I wanted to breastfeed her I had to rent a pump at the hospital. The kit (tubing and breast shields) itself cost $50...each mother is required to purchase it for hygenic purposes. That dosen't even include the rental which you have to have a credit or debit card to use so that they can charge you if the return is late, etc. I actually have an extra kit that I purchase when my son was born (I couldn't find my ols set until after I purchased a new one), which you are more than welcome to have if you would like, of course you would need to wash and sanitize it. If you do not have the money to rent one your best bet is to get in contact with the WIC office ASAP. The lend them to mothers in need, especially ones with babies in NICU or born preterm. For more info you would need to call them at 7-800-342-3556 or on the web at www.doh.state.fl.us/family/wic/index.html

If you ever need anyone to talk give me a message or a call ###-###-#### or at home ###-###-#### I found with my first one I quit breastfeeding early (she was only 3 1/2 months) because I was young (19) sleep deprived and my mother told me her babies slept through the night b/c they were on formula...I made the switch and it made it worse. I don't want to ramble on about my experiences...This time my son is almost 6 months and still breastfeeding, my only problem is he will not take a bottle for anything...He has only been away from me an hour at a time once a week for church.

Good Luck C., I'll be praying for you and your unborn.

I honestly dont think that medicaid will pay for your pump, but I am almost positive that you can get it thru WIC-and if you are able to qualify for medicaid you will qualify for WIC

You can buy manual breast pumps that cost around $20 or a battery operated one that cost close to $30, yeah they take more time to pump the milk but they are a lot cheaper and work. Good luck!

Hi C.,

I went into labor at 33 weeks with my now 3 1/2 yr. old twin boys and I was not prepared. The hospital loaned me a breast pump while I was there. My boys had to stay in the hospital for about 1 month and while they were in here the hospital also let me use the pump while I visiting them. If the hospital that you are planning on using does not offer this service I know of a place in Orange Park that rents the Medela breast pump (I feel this is one of the best). The place is called Atkinson's Pharmacy, it is on Kingsley blvd. across from Orange Park Hospital. I hope this can be of some help and if you have any questions please feel free to ask me I have been where you are. I am also the mom of a 7 yr. old boy and a 4 1/2 yr. old daughter. Good luck and I hope everything turns out good for you.

Thanks,
R.

C.,
All hospitals have breast pumps for the parent to use, when you speak to your doctor ask him what your next step is for doing that. Good luck and hope all goes well.

You will be fine I had a baby girl at 28 weeks and shes fine. Medicaid does not cover breast pumps. You can buy cheap breast pumps at the store. If you need one that bad in a hurry call mothers helping mothers. They have a nice selection.
