I know this may sound a little early, but I am trying to think of a game to get my 4 year old boy for christmas. Just seeing if any one had any ideas on which games other children liked.

What can I do next?

Hi,

I am also a mother of a 4 year old and some of the games we play are: Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, Memory Games, The fishing game with cute little fish that bite on a little rod, and many others. I hope this helps!

Games we have that we play regularly in the order we started playing them:
Candyland
Hi-Ho-Cherrio
Mexican Train (a somewhat complicated dominos game which my extended family plays and my son has learned to play)
Chutes and Ladders
Dr. Suess ABCs
Dr. Suess Cat in the Hat (need to know his letters)
Memory
card games (Go Fish)
Life (we have to read the squares, but he loves to play)

We (he and his dad and me) play board games almost every night. I think it's sort of funny that he's really into Life. He has difficulty losing, (though he's very lucky so mostly we lose) and sometimes the games are stressful but I think he's learning important lessons about playing together. He's 4 1/2.

try getting a few toys from this company. They carry European toys that don't have batteries, bells, whistles or any annoying cartoon characters plastered all over. A lot of the toys and games are made of wood, so they are more durable and last longer. A little more expensive but very unique in nature.

HI HO CherryO. It's very simple and my kids have liked it for years. My 7 yr old still asks to play it sometimes. I think it would be very good for a 4 year old.

What are your son's interests? Try to find a game that goes along with his interests but also would encourage him to think. My boys are 13 and 10, and I will take them to Toys R Us just to look around. They will tell me which games they want, and I will try to find the most educational ones I can. We have been doing this since they were little.

I have two sons ages 7yrs and 3 1/2yrs. They both love gameboy advance as we travel a lot and it's great to take everywhere. I like educational games provided by LEAP FROG LEARNING SYSTEMS. Log onto www.leapfrog.com for many educational game ideas. My youngest really likes the Leapster game system much like gameboy, but VERY educational and fun! You can buy games like Dora, Spongebob, Spiderman and so on. They are age appropriate so look at the recommendations before buying. They also love educational computer games such as Blue's Clues Preschool, Mickey Mouse playhouse, Stuart Little etc. They all teach great lessons and provide hours of fun. Last x-mas I also bought a Thomas the train wooden train set. Great investment. The boys play together and build different tracks. They have a few battery powered trains they like best. Clue Jr is a great kids board game as well as Candyland, Memory etc.

Weloved Crayola color dominoes, Alphabet Bingo, Hi-Ho-Cherry-O, Trouble, Slap Dragon, Uno ( they have a ton of character versions) and various matching/memory games ( we had Pooh). Also, I just saw a game called Sequence jr or Sequence for kids which could be a fun one, it was at Amazon.com. Of course, there are always Candyland and Chutes & Ladders. There are tons of character based games out there, which are for the most part pretty crappy, so I wouuld stay away from most of those. Also, there are the Barrel of Monkeys games ( they have a few different versions) which are okay.

Good Luck,
N.

Hi,
Our four year old loved the magnet building toys, "Magnetix" I think they are called. They are everywhere from Wal-Mart to Toys-R-Us. They are not cheap however. I would suggest getting one of the bigger "kits" than buying them a little box at a time. New age leggos. : )
We are big fans of ant farms too : )
