I Need to Cook More Often

Ok so I am still decorating for my clients.. 12 hour days. I have tried to cook as much as possible. Our daughter has been helping..

My husband gets home later than us, but will still grill if we have the food prepped.. Last night I defrosted some stuff, threw together a veggie.. But for a change, I actually baked in the oven potatoes.. Olive oil and salt..

Our daughter was fascinated. Se asked why are you making the potatoes like that? I told her they just taste so much better when baked rather than microwaved..

She loved them.. I asked her, why are you so surprised? She said, well you have never made them like this...our daughter is 22 years old! OMG! She is right.. I had never made a real baked potato for her.

I have never cooked in a pressure cooker for her.. I used to use one all of the time, before she was born..

I just found it interesting that I had gone this long, without cooking such a basic staple from my own childhood.

How about all of you? What are your children amazed that you can do.. That used to be " normal" during our childhoods?

What can I do next?

My son cracks me up when he assumes that every. Single. Thing. At my moms house is homemade!
I mean, come on! Gram doesn't "make ketchup"!!!

I was thinking about you, L., about all your decorating for the season. I'll bet you could have even fixed my strand of lights that doesn't work on my pre-lit tree.

My son watched me fry him an egg just this morning, and he seemed amazed that I could do that.

With me, usually cooking MORE just means that he eats more mediocre cooking!! Ah well...

Happy holidays!

My mom is a chef, so you can only imagine the wondrous creations that were commonplace in my childhood, that my kids only get when they go to grandma's! Fresh-baked bread, wonderful soups, fancy French dishes that I can pronounce, but have no idea how to make... Also, my mom is very crafty - she can paint, sew, decorate. I can do none of these things. My mom never makes me feel badly about my total lack of Martha Stewart-ness, but I can't help feeling that way myself. *sigh*

That being said, I'm certainly a proficient cook, and I do make a daily effort to make dinner from scratch. I hope my kids will grow up with good memories of my cooking. I know their memories won't be as good as mine were from my childhood though. :-/

@One And Done: my mom actually DOES make ketchup! And mayonnaise! *sob*

I always make a dinner at night, even now since I live alone. It's not easy when you work long days and then come home and make a meal and have to do clean-up. I suggest you do more cooking on weekend and during the week make a lot of slo-cooker meals or simple meals during the week.

For myself, I don't bake nearly as often as I did years ago. At one time I had a rental with a fantastic kitchen and I had lots of room to make bread and make lots of cookies at holiday time. My kitchen now simply doesn't have the counter space to do a lot of cooking. But I miss having the room to bake.

Well when I get up and put on make up and have my hair down my kids automatically want to know where we are going! I do wear clothing, but around the house it's like a knit top and leggings and I just do very low key make up and always have my hair up. But sometimes I do just throw on some jeans and shoes and do my hair and make up just because...don't I????? So to my kids just the act of getting dressed is amazing! Although this Christmas my hubby gave me a shopping spree and I got two awesome purses (that are not diaper bags), a beautiful wallet, a ton of fantastic make up and I recently got back to getting my hair done....so maybe in 2013 they will meet the mommy their daddy married, LOL!!! Merry Christmas! And you are sooooooooooo right about the potatoes, my mom only nuked them my whole life and now I either bake them in the oven or mash em' or skip em' bc they are far superior out of the over than the microwave :)

I used to cook with my kids till they went to school. I made homemade biscuits and pizza dough from scratch. Sine they finally found some time they relearned the biscuits and I taught them gravy. Too many carbs for me now, sadly.

Like quite a few on here, my son always gets excited if I actually put on something other than jeans and tennis shoes with no makeup. If he sees the makeup bag come out, he will sit on the toilet and watch in amazement as his mommy transforms and when I'm done he says "Wow, you are gorgeous mommy!". Most days he just says I'm beautiful but I like hearing gorgeous, LOL. And when I do actually dress up (maybe twice a year), my husband brings out the camera because he knows it will be a long time before he sees it again!
