I think my job is takeing years off my life. The stress level is so high it effects my health (migraines, stomach problems and mental health) but it's steady work with good pay and insurance for me and my son. How do you know when to quit? There is no time to look for another job I put in 50 hours a week and I got to tell you...I'm scared to death. Does anyone out there have Medicade for their kids? Is that what you get when your job doesn't provide insurance? This is what bothers me most is starting over with a child. Any advice or comforting words would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gals!

Hey. You should not stay at such a stressful job, that's for sure! I know a couple of ladies recommended Monster.com, and I agree. Also the classifieds usually have a lot of listings.

Medicaid is for low income families. It is 100% free, and 100% coverage. If you make too much for that there is another program called Health Choice from Blue Cross. I am pretty sure you have to go through social services to get it, but it is for a higher income level. That is only $50/yr and has really low co-pays.

Good luck with your job search!

Hi Tanya,
I quit a job when I had 2 kids and was single! Dont sweat it, God takes carr of us when we need him most. First put in for some personla time that you have accrued, then the best thing to do is put in a months notice. That way you can take time and not be worried about getting fired or not finishing your work. If you cant find a job, and you need financial help, then yes the state will help you get back on your feet, so take that leap. Thats the only time anything good happens! Good luck~

I SO KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT WORKING ALL THE TIME. IT'S VERY HARD WHEN YOU HAVE LITTLE ONES WHO DEPPEND ON YOU.
I HAVE MEDICADE FOR MY 4 CHILDREN. THEY TAKE THE SIZE OF YOUR HOUSE HOLD AND THE INCOME TO DESIDE IF YOU GET IT OR NOT.
THIS PAST WEEK MY 5 YEAR OLD GOT HER TEETH WORKED ON CAUSE SHE WAS IN ALOT OF PAIN AND WITHOUT IT... SHE WOULD HAVE SUFFERED.
I THINK ALL CHILDREN HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE GOOD HEALTH CARE.

I feel for you trust me! I was a divorced mom with 2 boys at one time, no child support , I was working full time and paying all the bills , insurance etc. I know it is hard!! Medicaid is for low income families, usually if you are offered insurance at work you would not qualify. If you live in Alabama there is a program offered through Blue Cross called ALLKids, you have to pay for it , but the premiums are only like $50.00 a year, your copays usually run $5.00 and under. And if I am not mistaken I don't think you have to be low income. It is worth checking out, insurance premiums are riduculous! At my employment family coverage is over $600.00 ,monthly people really are working just to have insurance. Good luck, I hope you find a resolution.

Hi T.. If you do decide to quit your job, dont worry about insurance for your kids, you can either get Medicaid or Alabama All Kids...which is the insurance you can qualify for if you make too much to qualify for Medicaid. All Kids is the state-funded CHIP (Childrens Health Insurance Program) that our state has, every state has a CHIP program and it is great insurance..I used to work for a company related to them so I know what a great program it is. Good luck!

Hi T.,

I'm self employed and purchase health insurance for my husband, son and myself for around $400 a month. It can be less or more depending on the deductible you choose.

Don't let yourself be controlled just by insurance and fear. If you're unhappy, seek change. It might be scary as hell, but you'll be happier and thus your household happier in the long run.

Good luck!

I would recommend getting your resume together in the evenings after your son has gone to bed and then start scanning the want ads in the paper, and get your resume on Monster and Career Builder, and if you have local job boards you can post it on, it won't take too much time and you can do all of those online so it could be done in the evening if you have a computer and internet access. I understand about a high pressure job where you just feel as if you are going to lose it at any minute, but if you can keep that job til you find another one that would be the best thing. If it gets to be too much and you cannot take it anymore then you could go ahead and quit, but I would leave that as a last resort. If you can maybe take a few days vacation and really work on the job front. Talk with some temp agencies and let them know that you are only looking for permanent work and if they can help you set up some interviews. that is how I got my current job and I only had to be out of work for 1 week before I started, I just took an extended lunch break for my interview and said that I had an appointment. It all worked out. you will be given the option of keep cobra after you quit for up to 6 months I believe, you will pay a much higher premium than you currently pay with your company, but you will keep the same insurance during that time between finding a new job and new insurance kicking in, so if you do leave make sure you get some information about that from HR. I wish you the best. In the end you have to do what is best for you and your son. Life is too short to not experience it.

If you leave your job, you can keep your exact same health insurance for a while with COBRA. Your employer is required by law to let you do that if you choose. Here is more information: http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/faqs/faq_consumer_cobra.html

It does cost more, but it will let you and your family stay insured while you look for a job.

But before you quit, talk to your boss or manager about the problems you're having with your current job. Maybe they can adjust your schedule or workload so it's more manageable to keep you from leaving.

Hi T.,
You sound like me. I'll be 40 in 3 months and was 36 with my baby and 33 with my oldest. I'm totally alone here, single, Mom 2,000 miles away and Dad 1,000 miles away. I just quit my teaching job because the Dr. said stress was to blame for my migraines as well as fibrocystic breast pain. Stress of doing it all was too much for me. I'll figure out a way, for me it's writing. Think about business writing maybe... There is also things like web pages and affliate marketing. If you believe, you can achieve. I trust that and I'm raising 2 boys, bought a house and am doing it alone. What about college? I'm a grad student, so my student loans (gasp) supplement my budget. We are doing fine, it's a tight budget, but the stress is under my control. Life is good and I'm free.

My son's are on medicaid and it's great. We don't get other assistance right now except for WIC. Just knowing that I don't have to worry about the medical is a relief. Keep in mind though, in case of emergency, Medicaid will retroact coverage for up to 3 months. (did in VA when I needed it). It covered me as well.

There are discounts plan also, but I never went for this since I just banked on not needing it. These plans cost like $40-60/month and say they charge half or so of what a DR would really cost. Some are good. I used to sell AmeriPlan for dental, and the good thing is that you can still buy a plan and cancel it when you don't need it anymore..this is why I didn't make more money:(

T., at our age and such young kids, we started this late for a reason. Enjoy it, really. As long as you won't go hungry and have the basics, the rest can come later in my eyes. Time=Childhood, this is all we have.

smiles, Julie

There is always an opportunity to look for a job via the internet on monster.com and several other job websites. This could also include looking on the internet to see if your local newspaper has a website with job listings. You can place a permanent application online on the job sites and employers can come in and look or you can send your resume to jobs you find interest in. You can always take personal time, vacation time, sick leave, if in fact you have those paid benefits at your current employer and set up interviews. Of course you want to plan this out carefully so you do not use up all your free time for very few interviews. Don't make the mistake of paying a fee for a headhunter website that will look for jobs for you for a fee. There are too many free sites out there. As I said before, Monster.com is a great place to start.

There are also work from home sites. One mom said to check out west.com for an opportunity. There are many scams out there but this site is great for getting advice from other moms. Good luck

There is always time to look for another job. There are places like Manpower, Paychex, Kelly services and other agencies that will take your info, and look for a job for you. You don't have to complete all the paperwork at their office you can do some of it at home and then come on a lunch break or take a half day off to complete it. They get paid by the employer not you. Never go to an ageny that requires you to pay. You can also look for jobs on monster.com, hotjobs.com, job.com and other web sites. Again the service is free to you, it's paid by the employer. Don't stay at a job that is going to cause your health to decline.
