I Need Help!! Tarter on My Daughter's Bottom Teeth

My daughter is almost 17 months old. We brush her teeth twice a day and she doesn't fall asleep with the bottle and only gets diluted juice once in a while. I have started to notice that she has tarter on her bottom teeth!! This is starting to concern me cause I don't know what to do. Every dentist that I have called will not see her till 2 years of age or until she gets all her teeth. She only has 8 teeth 4 on top and 4 on the bottom. I really am paranoid about this and need some sort of resolution. I don't understand why she is getting it cause she doesn't eat sweets and like I said she doesn't fall asleep with the bottle. Can she be getting this from the 2 bottles a day she gets of milk??

Thank you for the advice in advance any tips would be greatly appreciated.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your responses to my question. I have called several Pediatric Dentist in the surrounding areas still to be told that they will not see her until she gets all her teeth or till she turns 2. I did have one dentist that said she could come in and get her teeth scraped! I am going to keep trying dentist until I find one that will take her. She has beautiful white teeth they just either have plaque or tarter on the bottom ones but I want to keep them in great shape even if they are just her baby ones.

But once again thank you so much for all your advice this mamasource is great!!

Did your daughter's teeth come in early? By that I mean before 6-7 months? When their teeth come in early they tend to be softer and can develop decay easier than teeth that stay in the gums a little longer. I had this problem with my first child. Yes milk in the bottle can do this. Milk is very acidic and the bottle allows it to sit in her mouth for a long time. The bottle should have been eliminated when she turned a year old so you may want to work on that before you develop additional problems. Most pediatric dentists won't see a child until they are two but you could try Susan Blankenship in Palm Harbor. Did you start brushing her teeth as they came in? If not you should be brushing them at least twice a day. That should help a lot. Best of luck to you.

My 2 yo’s teeth were a bit yellow around the gum and also looked like she had a bit of tarter buildup. The Ped said to use the smallest toothbrush we could find so not to miss teeth and use a very small amount of fluorinated toothpaste (if it’s swallowed it wouldn’t do any harm since it’s just a small amount) and it did come right off. Also, the Ped recommended flossing her teeth since they are tight. I said “how on earth am I to floss a 2 year olds teeth??” She suggested the individual flossers – and my daughter loves to use them! (I picked up a bag of 50 – Walgreens Brand – for a couple of bucks) She actually will do it without us asking her. I noticed that behind her bottom teeth she has build up, and the end of the flossers has a pointy tip, so my husband held her mouth open and I managed to remove a bit of the tarter. We do a little bit every few days so not to freak her out.

It could be a lack of vitamins in her diet or sometimes they inherit bad teeth. Either way, it is her first set of teeth and they will fall out only to get new ones. If your really worried I would call around to Pedi Dentists to see if one will see her and give you advice that will make you feel better. There are some dentists out ther beginning to advocate getting your child's teeth checked as young as one! For what it's work we go to Dr. Myles Levitt in St. Pete..he is GREAT!

Hi, I just wanted to comment about every dentist not seeing your child until the age of 2? my son has been going to our dentist since he was 6 months old and had no teeth just to get him used to the dentist and sitting in the chair on our laps. He goes every 6 months and he isnt even 3 yet but now when he goes he is used to the sound in the office because he has been hearing it since he was a baby and he also sits by himself now in the chair.

Have you introduced her to a toothbrush yet? My 16 mos old son loves to sit up on the sink with his toothbrush and imitate me when I brush. Not only is it cute but I really think it helps him keep his teeth clean, it also starts good habits early. I use a tooth paste specifically for toddlers, can't use the grown up stuff because it has too much floride if they swallow it. Also, some people are just more prone to dental issues that others...my son's dad has never had a cavity and I have several fillings even though I try so hard to keep a healthy smile!
I'm also a 38 year old single mom of a 16 mos old son that I adore! Most of my friends are w/o kids and out on the town or the other ones have kids in high school!

when my son was very young on his first set of teeth, I was so worried because I did let him sleep with diluted apple juice. Even after being warned (I was a dummy). His teeth turned black and I went through my guilt trip, but was assured even though I shouldn't have done that and that it more than likely contributed to them rotting out, not to worry they were his first set of teeth. My son is now 20 and he never took pride in brushing and besides they r a bit yellow now (which he cares now) They did turn out very nice. Good luck ur doing well being persistant on oral hygine. As always eveyones advice is fine and dandy it's what will work for u that is the struggle ...u end up tring so many diffefferent things. And always bring it up with ur child pediatrician.

I dont know where you live but Dr Johnny Johnson in Palm harbor is great. We have been taking our guys there since they were under two, with great results. Some people just have a genetic disposition towards tarter, my husband and one onf my sons are the same way, so dont feel like its something you did...
If he is too far away, just search specificly for Pediatric dentists, they will see your kids when they get thier 1st tooth in if you want them to.
