I Love Thrift Store Shopping! Any Other Treasure Hunters Out There??

I didn't always like "treasure hunting". When I was younger, mom used to schlepp me out on her excursions and I abhorred it. I thought I was too good to be caught dead in "those" stores. Now I am a married, SAHM mom to 3 kids and we have an abundant life where I could shop at any luxury or fine store...and guess what?? I now love to go "treasure hunting". So I am a convert!! I love getting a deal, and the idea that it is recycling goods that are already out there. I love that many of these things have a story behind them...and that many of these facilities are charity organizations.

Anyone else out there like to go to thrift stores? What have been some of your greatest finds??

So now I schlepp my little girl out with me...but she loves it!! She is much better than the brat I was!! Soo we found the cutest Christmas Tree serving dishes yesterday..even 50% off the price, a Webkins duck for a buck and a teddy bear holding a book that "reads" the entire "Night Before Christmas" story...and his little bear mouth moves to the story. Got him for a buck too!! My daughter and younger son will take him to school tomorrow to share it with their classes and have it read to the classes. Soooo cute...and for a buck!!

So...tell me your stories!!

What can I do next?

Oh yeah!! Ditto here...

Best deal? Probably my Henredon sectional sofa....it's 100% silk, stuffed with duck feather, kiln dried wood, etc....probably worth $10K, I paid $450.

Too many kitchen gadgets to even list for me. I recently took a girlfriend to the thrift store, who is setting up a new cottage and she loves hand made pottery.....we scored. We set up her entire kitchen with service for 8, mixing bowls, platters, teapot, utensil crock and more for probably $100 and in a regular store would have cost over $500.

Whenever I am out of town, I save room in the car or suitcase for thrift store finds. I make thrift shopping a part of my out-of-town to do/sightseeing list.

Love it. I always get my halloween costumes and seasonal decorations at thrift stores. No reason to pay full price. I get a lot of my kids clothes and housewares. Lots of knick knacks and unexpected treasure. I found a 1927 keepsake brass piggy bank of a model t car from my husbands tiny hometowns tiny bank. I never could've even thought to look for something like that, but there it was!

love repurposing & recycling....& thrifty buys!

Where do I begin? LOL...

Living room has Andersen windows which came from a friend who found them on trash day. I have wooden interior shutters hung on them...which my Dad found next to a dumpster in his alley.

Dining room has an Andersen Atrium door...9' of glass glory! Pulled it out of a house being demo'd for airport expansion. I think we paid $200 for it!

21 years ago, we moved from St Louis to our small town. We doubled the size of our home & I filled it by hitting yard sales, flea mkts, & antique shops. I picked up an antique oak buffet in primo condiiton for $75. Still using it! I also found 2 pieces of McCoy pottery. Paid $1.50 each...& as a matched set, they're easily worth $250 in today's economy!! :)

From top to bottom, my home is filled with "treasures". I also have an abundance of family heirlooms. Between all of this, it's eye candy city when you enter our home...well, really it begins when you pull up in the driveway! I even have an antique railway cart by the front door!

Bargain hunting & repurposing is a good solid value which we have instilled in our sons. I love that they restock their books by using the 2ndhand book store. & I really enjoy how they cash in their games/systems at Gamestop. All good things......

LOVE thrift stores! I buy T-shirts..any mens, womens, kids and "upcycle" them into SUPER cute, stylish dresses for my daughter!

We get SOOOO many compliments. Best part, they're usually only .50. Similar online boutiques sell their upcycled garments for $30+

Totally! I love thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, estate sales ... you name it. I've found some of the coolest treasures and people are always commenting on my "collections" when they visit our house. My mom and I stopped by an estate sale one day when I was a kid and these people had suuuuper cool stuff. I purchased four or five items and from then on, I was hooked! I still have those little treasures that I bought that day! I've started to take our daughter to our local flea market and she also calls it "treasure hunting." It's a fun past time to share and I think that these found objects lend a real personality to your home that you just can't buy at Crate and Barrel ;)

I got DD a v-tech laptop for $3 so when she broke the mouse, it wasn't that big an investment loss. I love finding things that are unique or out of print. A lot of my DD's books either come from the thrift store or the library book sale.

My favorite is finding a dress that my SD saw at a store for $200 that we got for $11 and it fits her like it was tailored for her.

My husband and I love flea market finds...

I've recently done a lot of craigslist finds. So far I've gotten a clawfoot tub with all of the chrome hardware [faucet, shower ring, shower head, stopper...] for $200 and the lady gave us a reproduction [vintage] porch light with it... A high tank [pull-chain] toilet for $110 [just needed to buy the new supply/fill tubes and got those new for $230 online]... A free antique dresser to repurpose as a vanity... A sink and medicine cabinet [w/a vanity we decided we didn't want to use] for $50... And an antique pedal car firetruck for $55.

My husband and I sell at flea markets too.

My proud flea market finds are 2 leaded stained glass windows IN FRAMES for $60 [in almost perfect condition - just had to sand & restain the frames]...

My BFF and I love yard sales. We've found all kinds of great finds over the years. During the winter months, we'll hit up the thrift stores.

One of the best buys was when my daughter and I went to make a donation at Good Will. The car in front of us had a green chair, that I was eyeing because it would be perfect for her room, thinking I'd pay $10 for it. So we asked the man working at Good Will and he told us to go inside and pay $5 and it was ours!

Yes, I love thrift stores, always have. My daughter (12) just had her concert and needed a black shirt. I told her we would go to Target or Ross and she was all "lets go to Goodwill, they have so many more to choose from". LOL! Sometimes on the weekends that we don't have the kids, hubby and I love to drive 80 miles to a mountain town to get out of the heat and go to several little thrift stores while we are there. We always get a great deal on kid books, usually buy 2 for .10 each and get one free. So our kids have probably 400+ books on a huge bookcase between their rooms. One of the best deals I got lately was Partylite candle holders in their boxes. I got 3 of them for $2 each and in the catalogs they are $40+ each!!! I've also gotten new baking dishes for .25 and .50. I also got a new ski jacket for one of my daughters for $4! Theres always great deals I find. =)

Thrift stores, YES! Yard sales, YES! Bargain counters and discount stores, YES! I love them all.
When our kids were small, I went to thrift stores because of need. I would always tell them not to be ashamed of wearing clothing from a thrift store, and one day pointed out as I bought a slightly used name brand item that I could never have afforded for them brand new, that the kids at school would never know that it wasn't something they'd had for a while and simply hadn't worn to school yet. And I pointed out that for the same price I paid for that item, I could have bought something cheap at KMart or WalMart, but that it wouldn't have been nearly as nice.
I think my prize thrift store purchase of all times has to be a table lamp. I was looking for something to light up a corner of my living room. Since the local Goodwill store was just a couple of blocks from where I worked, I decided to make the trip there on a lunch break. I had only about twenty minutes of time left to get there, shop and get back so breezed into the store quickly. As I approached the counter where the lamps were, I saw a stunning lamp that I immediately fell in love with. I grabbed it from the counter, took a quick look at the price tag and headed directly to the checkout counter. Returned to work with five minutes to spare and was absolutely giddy with my great find. Twenty years later that lamp still is a centerpiece in my living room, even though we've moved to a new home in the meantime.

I love my local thrift store, as I can try on every pair of jeans in my size that they have (maybe ten of them) and get all ten pair if I want for $40 total, the same price as one pair at the mall.

My husband went into Goodwill, spent $2 on 4 spoons he thought were silver. Two of them were silver and he made something like $50 in that one hour of shopping at goodwill and selling it to the gold/silver place.
