I Know I Am Being a Big Baby, but Is This REALLY Necessary???

Ok so I have been sick for what feels like forever now, basically since I started working again ( Preschool, evil little germ carriers!)
I have been to the doctor a while back and was prescribed Augmentin , 3 times a day for 10 days and yet I only got "a little" better I never felt like I was all the way better, but I chalked it up to being tired, to using my voice more than usual, and of course allergies.
Fast forward to the beginning of this week when one unfortunate night i ended up sleeping on my back, woke up to a horrible sore throat and thought, well it will feel better soon....nope. Woke up today and it was worse, so sore it felt like i was swallowing gravel, and heaven forbid I sneeze, felt like someone stabbed me in the throat.
So I bite the bullet and go to a walk in clinic. Doctor talks to me, I tell him when I was on Augmentin and for how long and the symptoms leading up to this. He says I have a yeast infection in my mouth ( I have Seen thrush before, I do not have a single spot in my mouth or on my tonsils, although my tonsils are swollen and red) he prescribes me liquid Nystatin to be swished and gargled 4 times a day and 6 days worth of Flagyl AND tells me to eat a probiotic yogurt 3 times a day.
The Nystatin is AWFUL. I gagged the first time I used it....it is like putting lotion in my mouth....I KNOW I am being a baby, but I do not think I can do this 4 times a day for the next 3 to 6 days.....is this REALLY necessary? Will I NOT get better without it? Is it possible to diagnose a yeast infection in someones mouth by LOOKING???? he did not do a strep test or anything... so frustrated. Advice appreciated.

What can I do next?

Morning
Try Capryl... It's a supplement you can get from a health food store. I have never used it for a mouth yeast infection, However, I will contend that IF you have that in the mouth, there is a problem in the gut (which is where yeast resides) .... When I sense a yeast infection coming on or have one.. I take a tablet, drink LOTS of water (as the Capryl kills off the yeast) so you want to flush it out.... anyway, take one.. drink lots of water, then if needed, I take one the next day.. or just follow instructions on the bottle.. Usually, the problem is cleared up asap.. Gotta tell you, suffered for years with candida.. and since taking Capryl, it clears it up better than ANYTHING.. and it's nice too because I don't like to take meds which can ultimately make matters worse..
Most doctors don't even know how about this stuff.. it amazes me that they don't... however, some alternative docs do.. but not too many

best of luck

Keep taking the Nystatin. For what it's worth, a couple of years ago, I also had a yeast infection in my mouth. I also had NO white spots, but he did swab my mouth and it was a yeast infection. So there you go. It did take the infection away, but (and this is a big but, lol), I STILL have a screwed up sense of taste from that infection. Actually, it's been 3 years this month. Everything except sugar tastes very weird to me and I always have an awful taste in my mouth. To give an example, at times, chocolate will taste like a raisin. Yeah, weird. Regular food does not taste normal anymore. I do not enjoy eating at all. You would think that would be a good thing. But remember I said the sugar was the exception? Well, that is all I eat. If it is sweet, it tastes great, it not, I'd rather not even eat it.

Hope you don't have this happen, but DO take the medicine. Good luck.

All this lingering problem and you haven't had a strep test? Did your doctor who gave the Augmentin give you a strep test? You should have one today, if only to rule out strep. Strep also can fail to appear as a positive in the first test when one actually does have it -- I've had several friends whose kids tested negative once, then felt awful and continued to have a sore throat, and a second test turned up positive; and then the same happened to my daughter. That's when a nurse finally said, "Oh, it can turn up as negative the first time when it's just getting started." Untreated strep can develop into scarlet fever, which though treatable is nastier. Get tested even if it's just to be sure you DON'T have it. It was negligent of the second doctor not to at least test you for strep and yes, he should have taken a culture to confirm the yeast diagnosis!

I'd take the Nystatin. I've had a yeast infection on my tongue and in my intestines for about 6 months after a heavy dose of antibiotics and I'm still fighting it with a very low sugar diet and natural antifungals. Untreated yeast overgrowth can cripple your immune system and cause extreme fatigue. It's no fun.
If you are going to take the Nystatin, you must drastically decrease the sugar in your diet and take probiotics or you are wasting your time. Yeast thrives on sugar. As soon as you finish the nystatin you will repopulate the yeast if you don't stop feeding the ones left and replenish good bacteria in your gut to keep things in balance.
Also, if you had strep, the Augmentin should have killed it (thus no need to test for strep). However, I'm not sure how long ago that med was taken so maybe a strep test is in order. See a Dr Monday if you aren't much better. Hope you feel better soon.

Sorry you're not feeling well, but all I can say is that when I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled, I got the worst pain in my throat and the back of my tongue. My daughter was a little baby and I was so afraid of getting her sick. I couldn't get in to my regular doctor, I didn't want to go to the ER. Here I was with stitches in my gums and my throat killing me, so, I called my oral surgeon. He didn't even ask me to come in, he immediately phoned in a prescription for a yeast infection in my mouth and gave me the same directions your doctor gave you. It cleared it up. Thank goodness.

Sometimes antibiotics can cause yeast infections.
I would try the new medicine as it seems strange you would get strep so soon after being on antibiotics, but anything is possible.

I just hope you'll feel better soon.

Best wishes.

Well sometimes one can get a yeast infection after taking Antibiotics. either orally or down there.

Per taking icky medicine orally: (and this worked for my picky son, when he had to take liquid Amoxicillin) but, per our Pediatrician, eat a few Cheetos just after downing your liquid medicine. It cuts the taste of it. Worked for my son. My son would also eat a few before taking his syrup too.
He did this for 10 days, twice a day, and had no issues, after we did the Cheetos method.

And they should do a Strep test.

Honestly if you don't feel better I would go back & demand a strep test.... I have had strep a lot this year, my tonsils never look that bad. But it is painful, and step test comes back positive. Sometimes an antibiotic knocks it back, sometimes I need something different or stronger. Sometimes my lymph nodes on my neck swell too which also hurts. (I'm getting my tonsils out soon btw since I'm so sick of getting strep).

I'm not a doc but always thought thrush caused white spots.

I think probiotics are a good idea for anyone on antibiotics. I take the pills instead of yoghurt though.

Hmmm. He gave you Flagyl (an anti-bacterial antibiotic) to replace the Augmentin. He gave you Nystatin (an anti-fungal) in case you DO have a yeast infection in your mouth & throat. And he told you to eat yogurt to replace the good bacteria in your gut. (He covered all the possibilities without doing any tests... not necessarily a terrible thing.)

I know it's awful-stuff, but I think you need to suck it up and and do all 3 things the doctor prescribed. Just taking the Flagyl alone MIGHT just make you sicker. And god knows, thrush is a miserable illness.

I was prescribed Augmentin recently for a sinus infection and got a minor sore throat the first few days. I read the side effects which say if you get a severe sore throat, contact your doctor immediately! It's a penicillin based antibiotic, so maybe you're allergic or you're getting the side effects. Call the doctor who prescribed it to you and get them to change your antibiotics immediately.

google Nystatin and see if it is just for the soreness or if it makes it go away. I would assume the pill is to make it go away and if Nystatin is for pain and you are ok to skip it, skip it. BUT if the Nystatis is for making it go away, you better use it. You have to complete the meds to make sure all of it is gone. I am sick all the time too, got thrush, etc I even ended up getting MRSA b/c I was on antibiotics all the time! Be careful.

I would start taking Vit D3, at least 2000iu daily. Definitely get on a probiotic. The antibiotics cause yeast infections. Eliminate all sugars from your diet. ALL sugars: fruit, breads, etc. Yeast thrives on sugar. If you cut out sugar, the yeast starves. Personally, I wouldn't be on antibiotics. I would use Vit D3, echinacea, thieves essential oil, peppermint essential oil, colloidal silver, that sort of thing. I can't remember the last time we had antibiotics in our house. The longer you are on the antibiotics, the more severe your yeast and other problems will be. There are some situations where antibiotics are needed, but they are way over-prescribed in our country.

My aunt gets thrush (yeast infection in the mouth) when she takes an antibiotic. Her mouth looks like it is coated in a white film, ewww. And she told me the stuff you have to swish around is the grossest stuff ever!!

I don't know how you could tell if your mouth looks normal and they didn't do a swab.

did they swab at all? for strep or mono (you have a horrible sore throat with mono).

I don't know for sure but the oral yeast infections I have seen are very obvious even to a layperson.

If you don't have a fever...it's probably not Strep. Sounds like bad allergies to me. The drainage makes my throat hurt. I would go back to the doctor though. I haven't heard of a yeast infection in your mouth before. Sometimes you get medical diagnosis from people that have no idea what they are doing. My nephew had ALL the symptoms of Meningitis and the Dr. didn't even test him for it. Sent him home with antibiotics for strep.(didn't do a strep test either!) He was SOOO sick. Ended up in the ER and was immediately quarantined with Meningitis. He is fine now. But, he will tell you it was absolutely the most pain he has ever had.

I agree with Leigh. Get a strep test if you haven't already. It happened to me and before it was diagnosed as strep I had Scarlettina. That's what they called it, not Scarlet Fever. But the same thing.

An itchier rash I have never had, I felt horrible, my throat was on fire, I lost two weeks worth of work, and therefore my paycheck. I was miserable.

Also, what about probiotics. It could be thrush, but if the nyastatin is impossible, call your doctor on call to see about other options.
