I Feel So Sick over This Story About the Nanny and the Two Kids in NY

I literally feel like throwing up after reading the story. I feel so horrible for the parents of these two beautiful children. I cannot even imagine what they are going through. How can something like this happen? How can a parent possibly vet a caregiver enough? It sounds like they were very careful in choosing this woman to be the nanny, from preliminary reports.

What can I do next?

My local news channel had this story.

http://www.koco.com/news/national/Police-2-kids-killed-na...

I cannot image what this family is going through.

Even after being a nanny for several years I seriously would NEVER have a nanny but will always use group care in a fully licensed child care facility. There is safety in numbers people.

Is it me, or have things gotten worse in the past few weeks? Several child abduction attempts, this story, and also that poor girl in south jersey--lured into a house by two teen boys to trade bike parts. They murdered her. I go back and forth between not wanting to leave the house or think about it, to wanting to drill my kids and pump them full of stranger danger type info!

This is so truly horrifying. I will be haunted by this story for the rest of my life. I am heartbroken for this family.

On a side note, I am disturbed at the thought that some people will say, "Well, that's what happens when you have other people caring for your children." I'm sure no one could have ever predicted something like this could happen to this family.

I read the story last night and was horrified. I can't imagine coming home to see my children... like that... the unimaginable pain those parents must be going through right now, and the turmoil that the surviving sibling (age 3) will have to endure in the coming years... so sad. And so senseless. They were so little!

Prayers to the family & everyone affected. :(

I woke up to this story as well - the dad went to my junior high and high school. There is a lot of shock and sadness for their family and I don't know how they will go through this. So far they have a lot of support and everyone is thinking about them. We are trying to decide on some sort of memorial or remberance for the babies.

I was horrified hearing it on the news this morning. I live in the NY metro area and my husband is a NYPD sergeant. He has seen lots of awful things - but this one has to be the worst. The bottom line is that evil exists in our world. YOu can't get around that. Makes me want to throw up.

After reading the link that Gamma provided, with the information about how the family went and stayed with the nanny's family in the Dominican Republic, etc., I can only surmise that she must have had a total mental breakdown to stab those two children to death. It's hard to even wrap your mind around this.

Crying at my computer right now. Wish I could hug my child this very second.

Me too, BVic.

How is it that no one knew that she was so mentally unbalanced? She was sick in her head, and no one knew it?

Mental illness is a terrible thing. How terrible that no one had enough of a clue to help this woman get help. This family paid the price.

I am always horrified at these acts against children by caregivers and parents. I always question what made them snap and go insane? Even if you did an FBI level background check and psych evaluation, that doesn't ensure that any person might NOT snap and go crazy. Crazy doesn't really have a face.

I read this night and was just sickened. I can't imagine how that mother and the three year old will ever move past what they had to see.

I don't know why I read the story this morning, but I wish I hadn't. I read it while I had the 2 y.o. in my lap and the 5 y.o. squished up against me. I can't even imagine, nor do I want to.

Makes my heart heavy.....

Why go all the way to a foreign country for a nanny? At least hiring an American she could have fingerprints, local references, and no loopholes with governmental crime amnesty.

I feel sad for so many--the family, the nanny's family, the remaining sibling, the Dominican maids who will now be fired due to fear and due to mama's friends' empathy that their friend will not want to LOOK at another Dominican maid.
