I Don't Know What I Should Be Doing? 15 Mos Very Sick

My 2 dd's started vomiting last Friday night. It was every 5 mins for the first couple of hours which gradually slowed to 10 mins then to 20 mins then finally every hour. This went on for 12 hours. I called the pediatrician at the point the girls were vomiting "foam" b/c they had passed the bile stage at that point. He said not much we could do, just let it run its course, and keep them hydrated.

My oldest dd recouped pretty quickly, but my 15 mos is still sick. She was in the ER Tues night to get an iv and help rehydrate her. They sent us home after midnight b/c they said it was pointless to admit her b/c all she was going to do was sleep anyways and she might as well do that at home. She has had severe diarrhea since Monday - as in just pure water that is explosive and goes all over her entire body (the diaper can not keep it in b/c it is so liquidy). She was finally up to 19 lbs as of Friday and as of Tuesday night she was down to 17 lbs.

What do I need to do. The Ped says go back to ER but the ER says "its viral.,.. let it run its course" Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I know there is a diarrhea virus going around and its taking 4 days to get over. Apparently it is explosive and no matter what you eat or drink, it comes right back out just like water. Maybe the IV fluids won't necessarily work but as a mom, if you feel she is dehydrated, then take her back to the ER for fluids. I don't know why the ER cares unless they are afraid it may spread to to other patients. If she seems to be crying and making wet diapers, she might not need the IV fluids.

if your PED says go to the ER then go tell your ped to call the er and have your dd admitted for testing. I had the opposite happen my ped said let it run its course and the er called and said dd needs to be admitted. she had c-diff not the flu though. suffice to say I fired that ped. 2# is alot to lose in a week for a child. what does the er care if she will just sleep thats what ins is for. use it. gl

Go to a different hospital and get a third opinion. My son had a nasty viral illness when he was younger. And despite care at home he was admitted until it was done, he just needed help with meds and fluids. Not that I was doing anything wrong it was just a nasty virus! Best of luck.

You may have to go to the ER because IV fluids may be the only thing that keeps her hydrated. The only risk she is in is dehydration.

Perhaps call your doctor and see if there is a clinic or med stop type place that can give her IV fluids but otherwise the hospital is your only choice. Another idea is maybe your doctor can send orders to the hospital for IV fluids so that you can skip the ER, get her hydrated and go without all the bills the ER seems to produce.

Get a third opinion. Find another pediatrician in the area and contact them. And if they also send you to the ER, have that ped. inform the ER that you were directed to go there by two different pediatricians and will be leaving when your daughter is stable. In cases of virus, it is very difficult to treat (sometimes impossible) so instead, you treat the symptoms. Keeping your daughter hydrated may be all the hospital can do, but then they need to do it.

If your gut says she is dehydrated, then go back to the ER or an urgent care facility. When my SS was about 9 he had to go in for outpatient care for several days. He was not admitted, but he received IV fluids because he couldn't keep anything down. Then DH took him home to sleep. Even if you are not admitted, they may need the fluids the ER can provide. You may want to call the pediatrician and ask them if they can send you somewhere else or if they can send some notice to the ER about the fluids. Kids just don't have the reserves adults do, so I'd rather be "that mom" than not get my kid treated. It's not like you don't have a legit concern. Poor kiddo. Hang in there, Mom.

If your ped wants the admission as for them to arrange a direct admit. Let the poor kid get the fluids they need for healing. Bypass the Er, if you don't trust your ped then get another opinion and possibly change docs. Kids all have a threshold of doing well then go over quick. If the child produces tears, pee, and is acting and playing normal your good, if not get the admit.

I would ask the ped to call the ER and have her admitted. Even if she is sleeping the entire time she can get a continuous IV to keep her hydrated. Can she eat anything like a piece of toast, chicken broth or rice (rice and/or bananas will help with the diarrhea)?
Poor baby her body is having a hard time fighting this off, I hope that she is feeling better soon.

This happened to my daughter last year when she was just over a year old. All we could do was keep her hydrated...which was a constant battle. It took almost a whole week for her vomiting and diarrhea to go away. Poor little thing. It was awful. I gave her so many baths...and she's often have diarrhea again in the bath. :( I did so many loads of laundry. All I did for 6 days was care for her and try to get liquids and mild food down her. Hang in there - just keep taking care of your baby and it will pass. Keep looking for signs of dehydration. Sanitize everything.

This happened with my oldest when he was 10 months. We got the "let it run its course" They gave signs of dehydration to look for (diapers, tears, lethargic, etc) and low and behold, about five days later (two car seat cleanings, and three disinfections of the nursery and a 24-hour a day cycle of laundy) he was better.
since the throwing up has subsided and she is able to take in food and fluids, that is good. Oh, my little guy lost some weight, but once he was healthy again, it all came right back on.
Save yourself the time and the expense and only take to ER if dehydration is present - she'll get better soon:)
