with all the housework, running after my toddler that I have to do!!
Hi Mamas! I've needed coffee all my life to function, just they way my body is wired. More than ever I rely on it to get me through the morning/the day. However lately I am sensitive to it and can't sleep until late late late, but there is no way (I've tried it) I can cut off the coffee, trust me, the house would be a mess, I'll be dragging myself all the day LOL So coffee (2 cups of it) really helps me big time do all the things I need to do to care for my toddler, take care of the house, etc. My husband works 16 hrs a day so I am doing everything with regard to my toddler and keep up of our place. Any advice you can give is appreciated, I've tried to cut back to one cup but I still drag myself to get through the day, 2 is the magic number but it keeps me up until late at night. Thanks mamas.

What can I do next?

Dear C.,
Unfortunately, you are addicted to caffeine. If you need it, it's because you are crashing. Research has shown that all coffee does for a person who craves it is bring him back to his natural level without the withdrawal. The only thing you can do is quit. It will not be fun or easy and it will take some time; there may be bad headaches and fatigue for days. But once your system is clean you will no longer need it and no longer have those insomniac nights!
I have not had caffeine in about 6 years now and I have to say it's so nice to be off the roller coaster!
PS also beware of colas, root beer and other sodas, chocolate , Excedrin and other hidden sources of caffeine.
Good luck!

I have problems with coffee keeping me awake, even decaf sometimes (mostly since being pregnant). But other things with caffeine are okay for me. I don't usually drink coffee. My parents had reasonable luck mixing half decaf and half regular after the first cup. I say keep your morning cup of coffee and try to substitute something else for the second cup--maybe tea? Drinking tea in the morning works for me. Also see if when you drink the coffee matters (try no coffee after lunchtime for a few days). You can do a little research and compare how much caffeine is in specific things so you can decrease your intake. 1 Excedrin tablet is about the same as 1 cup brewed coffee (instant is a little less). If I take more than half a tablet will keep me awake at night. I used Excedrin as an example because it tells you the amount of caffeine on the package (65 milligrams).

By the way the people saying you are addicted to caffeine have a point. But 2 cups of coffee is not that excessive an amount that is likely to be causing you problems other than keeping you awake. Some studies show 1 cup of coffee or tea daily has some health benefits. So it is a judgment call whether to cut down the amount or eliminate it completely.

Dear C., Skip the afternoon coffee and get some sleep at night. After a while you will be able to do your work during the day. If your toddler naps, take a little time for yourself. Have a plate of Vegi's, they will give you good energy.... Grandma Mary
