I Am Looking for a Good Place for Swim Lessons in Plano Area

My son will be 4 this month. We have a pool and have just been teaching him ourselves last summer. He is definitely comfortable in the water, kicks his feet and attempts to paddle his arms, all with water wings on. We are looking for swim lessons in order to teach him without his water wings. We want to know he could get himself out of the water if he fell in. We do have a safety fence around the pool perimeter. We have heard about Emler, not sure if it is worth the money. Any input would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I highly recommend Patty Favalora. She teaches from her home year round (her pool is enclosed), although you can choose to do only summer lessons if you like. She teaches just 4 kids at a time or you can pay more for private lessons. Because she is the only teacher, there are not other classes going on while your child is swimming. She is located near Ohio & Park in Plano.

We've been going to her since my oldest was 3. He'll be 5 on Sunday and can swim unassisted all over the pool, dive, etc. He is extremely confident in the water. My 3yo just started last summer and asks to go to "Ms. Patty's house" every day, he loves it too.

Here is her contact info:

I guess I'm in the minority here but I wasn't that impressed with Emler when I took my 2 girls there last summer. We went most of the summer because I paid for it and couldn't get my money back. But we quit about 3/4 of the way through it. My girls were almost 3 and almost 4 last summer so they were in 2 different classes, but at the same time. They have 3 different classes going on in the pool at the same time. It's really loud and crowded in there. And the water looked green and gross to me.

But the thing I didn't like the most was that their sessions are once a week for the whole summer (they go all year round if you want) and they teach them a little bit every week. It just seemed to move so slow, especially for my younger child. And my younger child was actually a better swimmer than my older child but that wasn't taken into consideration and she couldn't go into a different class because of her age. So she was in with babies where they don't really learn anything except to not be afraid of the water. I guess what I'm trying to say with this is that your child goes into the class that fits his age group, not his abilities and the class goes at the Emler pace, not your child's pace.

Most people rave about the Emler program so this is just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Try the YMCA they have swimming lessons, I'm not too sure of the cost, but I took my daughter there when she was 18 months, it really helped, and my husband and I was allowed to get in the pool with her.

My daughter is 4 and we just started swim lessons at Emler 4 weeks ago. From what I've seen so far, I think it's worth the money. We tried lessons at the Y last summer and every week we had a different teacher and my daughter wouldn't even get in the pool. We worked with her on our own to build her comfort level and she's been doing great so far at Emler. I fully expect by the end of the session in May she'll be able to swim a couple of feet on her own. They are also supposed to teach them what to do if they fall in.
