I have a Canon Rebel (SRL) that I love, but I am in the market for a camera that I can carry in my purse that will take great pictures. Any suggestions?

We have a Sony Cybershot that we love and it takes great pictures as well. We've had it a coupleof years so I am sure there are some with better bells and whistles now.

We got it at Best Buy and by the time we got the warranty, extra battery and case it was around $500.

Good luck!

there is a small, digital camera out there that has a cool "smile shot" feature (or something like that). it waits for the moment the subject(s) smile & have thier eyes open before recording the pic. worth googling before you buy, imho!

Last Christmas my hubby bought me a Kodak EasyShare MD853 and I LOVE it. It is super easy to use, gets ready for picture taking quick, and the quality has been much better than I expected. I use it more than my Rebel now. I think my husband got it the day after Thanksgiving for under 100 dollars. Very pleased with it!!!

I got a new camera for Christmas and I love it. It is a Sony Cybershot DSC-T700, it is really thin and touch screen. The picture quality is great, even with movement! I shopped around for a long time before I finally bought this one. There are a ton of options, good luck!

I love Canon cameras too. I'm very happy with my Canon Powershot which is about 3 yrs old, but there is a "current" model to it called the Canon Powershot A1000. I think it would be a great smaller one to carry around.

I used to sell cameras. That was a really long time ago so I am a little out of the loop as far as specific models, but I do know as far as brands go, I believe that Nikons are definitely the best. They take great pictures and are by far the most durable cameras. I had a rep from Nikon once take a camera lens off of an SLR and throw it against the wall and not a thing happened to it. It was still in perfect condition (not that I recommend trying that at home). But that is definitely something to think about especially if you're a mom. :)

Is your SLR a digital or 35mm film camera?

My husband and I got a Sony Cybershot for Christmas that was recently rated as the Top Buy by Consumer Reports. I think it's the DSC-170. I will tell you that we've done a lot of research lately because we haven't been as pleased with the indoor picture quality of this Cybershot as we were with our previous Cybershot (that I bought in 2004). After our research, we found that in compact and sub-compact cameras, megapixels aren't necessarily a good indicator of photo quality. I won't go into the complicated details as to why that is, but we do notice that our indoor photos have a lot of "noise", regardless of the manual settings for things like ISO. Going from an SLR to a compact or sub-compact camera might be a bit of a disappointment for you because you're used to the higher quality SLR photos. We are actually looking at buying an SLR later this year before a family reunion in Yellowstone because our 10.1 megapixel cybershot just doesn't compare to my 5.0 megapixel cybershot that's now 5 years old.

My large camera is a Sony as well and I absolutely love that camera!! However, my smaller camera is a Fuji Finepix and it's been the best. My DH did a ton of research (Consumer Reports and Cnet are great sites!) on it as well when he was in the market for a smaller one. It's been wonderful and takes the best pics and video. It's not small enough to fit in your pocket, but it will fit in your purse. PM me if you want to know the specifics.

I also had a Canon Rebel SLR for over 10 years... I purchased a Sony cybershot and was never fully satisfied.

I ended up with the Nikon D80... and love it.. and it does fit in my "large" purse... and it is a digital slr ...

We have always preferred Canon over other brands. Just a suggestion (that was given to me when I purchased my latest camera): if you like the software and the general feel of the camera, go with the brand you know and trust. I have NEVER been disappointed in any of my Canon cameras. We have a Powershot and love it!
