I Am Absolutely LIVID!

I just went online to buy our tickets for our Easter family trip back home to the northeast and I noticed that Spring break is in March 16-20 and Easter is not until April with no days off around it. What the F*** is that all about???????? I am so mad right now I am seeing red! I have never seen such a crock of bull in all my life. I signed onto to some of the school websites in Delaware thinking maybe it was a universal thing this year but NO, they have a normal spring break right around Easter like it should be. Not to mention they have more days off as well. Who the heck wants to have spring break in the middle of cold March anyway? In all of my 35 years, spring break has always coincided with Easter. What is so different about this year? This is going to ruin my plans! I am sorry for ranting and acting like a big baby but I am pissed! Can someone please talk me down from the ledge and explain to me why this is happening this year?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I calmed down since I wrote that post this morning. I called the school district and they said, just like you ladies, that spring break has always been in March. I still have the opinion that it is utterly ridiculous but I guess it is what it is. I have decided to let the kids miss about 4 days of school and still plan the trip around Easter time. Thanks for all of your kind and helpful responses. I will make a point of being more organized and planning ahead for now on. :)

I hate to say it L., but that is how it has been for all the years we have been here!! I am not sure if they have a logical reason for it..I do know that I hate it being so early! Not only because of Easter, but mostly because of the weather. I want to be nice and warm for Spring break!! We should have the Friday off before..it is good Friday. And, the Monday after is usually off, although I know it is a snow holiday make up day, so if we have too many bad weather days, we will have to head to school that day. Like I said, I know it is a bummer, esp. when you are not used to it, but it is a Texas thing it seems. I am sorry that it has ruined your plans...but you know, i say, take the kids out of school anyway, and have a great time..but that is just me:) ~A.~

In all my years, Spring Break has always been in March, including when I was in college - so that's almost 30 years. It does often coincide with Easter, but that's due to Easter moving (and not Spring Break). Here's the Easter dates for the next 40+ years:
http://users.sa.chariot.net.au/~gmarts/eastcalc.htm

Also, note that it varies depending upon whether you're Orthodox or Western. Also, there are Jewish and Muslim holidays that tend to roam as well.

My kids go to a private Catholic school, so they also get the entire Easter holiday off - it starts with Easter Thurday and ends with Easter Monday. Personally, we enjoy the options we have of traveling either in March for Spring Break and/or choosing to see family for Easter. Personally, I don't consider visiting family to be a vacation ;) For me personally, the March spring break is perfect, since I almost always have a meeting before or after, so my kids travel with me either to or from the meeting.

It's interesting as you likely won't ever get two people to agree on what's convenient, since all our families have unique perspectives, due to ages of kids, different school and work schedules. We had an incredibly long discussion about my work meetings, which occur 3x per year as to how it impacts folks' personal lives. For example, folks in Europe don't like the timing for our summer meeting because it often coincides with their long summer vacations. For University folks, if the meeting isn't during their Spring Break, it's very difficult to attend.

So, this is definitely YMMV, but personally not something I would over stress on. FYI, most school schedules have Spring Break defined 9 mos before. And, Easter is determined for decades. So, planning earlier is always a good idea. Most airlines will give you a credit if the airfares go down.

That's how it's been here for a long time. Most spring breaks are in March. Easter isn't the same every year, and this year it's a little later. They used to give Good Friday, and sometimes the following Monday off, but that's up to each school district now, and a lot of them aren't giving them as holidays, or even teacher in-service days. Sorry! I wish they would give at least one day around Easter, but not all school's do.

Spring Break has always been that time of year where I've gone to school and worked (Plano, Keller, and in college at Baylor). I know this because my birthday is March 19, and I've always had a spring break birthday. Last year, Easter was in March so they were together. All we usually get for Easter is Good Friday which is usually a bad weather day so we don't always get that too. My sister is in Connecticut and her kids get a week in February and one in April around Easter, so I assume that's more of a northern trend. Everywhere I know in Texas has a mid-March Spring Break. I'm sorry it's bummed your trip. :( You should be able to check on your districts website to check out next year's school calendar to plan your trip.

Hi, L.. I was also confused when I moved here from Louisiana. We would always get a Mardi Gras break and an Easter break (no Spring break). However, Louisiana is mostly Catholic, so that makes a difference. We also got a whole week off for Thanksgiving. Somewhere down the line, they added days to the school calander, and now it is what it is. But, yes, spring break is always in March here (and in Arkansas and several other states as well). I doubt it will ever change. The Friday before and Monday after Easter are "bad weather make up days", so if there is no bad weather, then we get that off... well, not me, because I teach at a college! I'd rather it be warmer for Spring break too, but hey, it is what it is.
