Hey Mamas!

Has anyone tried HypnoBirthing? Not necessarily THE HypnoBirthing, but even just working with a hypnotist through pregnancy and L&D?
I'm considering it as a birthing method and wanted to get a few reviews/viewpoints on the subject.

Thanks all!
J. :)

HI J.,

I have a good friend who delivered her own baby using hypnobirthing. She was in the hospital ready to deliver but the doc didn't get there in time. She said it was awesome.

I have not done it, but would highly recommend water birth if that is a choice for you! I'm happy to give personal info on that one! :)

Good luck!!

That's great that you're considering using hypnosis to support your delivery - it's a valuable way to foster relaxation and pain relief and can help anyone seeking to have a healthy and natural pregnancy. I've known hypnotherapists who offer hypnobirthing in my area and they find it helps a lot of women.

HI J.,
I use hypnobirthing for both my sons. It was great. My births were fast and...well, almost enjoyable! When your mind relaxes so does your body and when your body relaxes then it's easier for the baby to come out. It doesn't remove the uncomfortable-ness (is that a word) but your body was designed to have babies, so...ya know? It's a matter of opinion, but as a therapist I know that my mind believes what I tell it, so it worked for me, i still use it as the dentist and other places I find uncomfortable. Avoid baby shows and delivery horror stories, they fill your mind with fear!
Good luck!

Hi J.! Well, I tried the hypnobirthing. I took the classes from Amazing Births in Delray. I enjoyed the classes, but unfortunately the technique did not work well for me. I will say that I have used the deep relaxation techniques in other stressful situations ( like flying), so it was definitely worth the time. I gave birth in a hospital, and the environment just didn't jive with the concepts. I was able to successfully get myself in a trance like state, but at one point two nurses came in and were laughing, and it broke the trance. At that point I realized it REALLY hurt, and then started stressing, and it was all downhill from there. I would say that if you wanted it to be successful, a doula would be ideal, and either a home birth or birthing center. For my second child, I went totally mainstream with an epidural. I was nervous about the needle, but it was nothing. Here is how I compare the two births. The first without meds was like getting a leg cut off. The second was like scraping a knee. I could feel it, but it didn't hurt and was so easy. I've seen a lot of hypnobirthing dvd's, and it does seem to work for some people, but unfortunately not for us. I don't want to sway you away from it, b/c it is a beautiful concept. I was too strongwilled to get pain meds when I really needed them, and I put myself through a lot of needless agony. From that experience I would say just keep an open mind. Good luck with your baby! Congrats! :)

I took the classes for my 2nd child's birth but didn't get to really use them until my 3rd and what Denby (local instructor/friend) taught me really did work. Yes, I felt pain but I was able to breathe and relax thru each surge. Tensing up only makes the pain worse. At the point where I didn't think I could do it anymore I knew it was time to go over to the birth center. I had an unmedicated waterbirth at Labor of Love in Lakeland and wouldn't change anything. If/when I have another child I would use it all over again.

On another note I have used it when I'm not feeling well or am in pain and it also seems to help relax me then.

Yes, I took the HypnoBirthing classes with my husband and loved them! We also used the teacher as a doula at the hospital. I don't know how I would have done it without her! I would be happy to pass on her info if you are interested.
Congratulations on your baby,
R.

Dear J.,

I did Hypnobirthing 2 years ago with the birth of my son. I was in labor for 12 hours and used the breathing and relaxation techniques the whole time.I was able to focus and stay calm throughout. I also happened to be on Pitocin and ended up having a c section for failure to progress. I did not have any pain medication as I was really "in the zone". It was only when I was told about the c section that I lost it. I am pregnant again and plan to use it during this labor too. Good luck.

Yes! I actually just had my 2nd baby last Tuesday and used a hypno-therapist this time around. He's my uncle so I trusted him. He also read up on 'THE' Hypno book to kind of get a feel for where they were coming from so he could incorporate some of their philosophy with what he already knew from his professional standpoint. I totally recommend doing it. I had a very quick 5 hour labor, which actually took me (and my husband) by surprise. We just barely made it to the hospital in time, which wasn't so bad, since I didn't have to be checked by the nurses and hooked up to wires. It took maybe 3 pushes and I was done. It was such a great feeling to deliver my second naturally vs. my first with an epidural. I'd do it again for sure! Let me know if you have any more questions about it!

I used hypnobirthing 2 years ago with my son, and it was a wonderful experience. I also went to Denby (someone else mentioned her) and she really prepared me (and my husband) for the experience. I agree with whoever mentioned how sometimes the hospital doesn't really work with you to go naturally, though I'm sure many have had easy experiences at hospitals. Mine wanted to break my water, keep me motionless in bed, and even threatened a c-section if my moving caused the monitor to lose the baby's heartbeat! Nevertheless, I was able to stay calm and focused, and politely refuse all their "help" and have my son naturally and with no complications. It was a wonderful experience, and I will definitely do it next time, though I hope to find a birthing center or, ideally, water birth location.

Hi J.,

I used Hypnobirthing with my second birth, and it was definitely a generally helpful thing for me. I did not employ all the specific breathing, visualization, etc, mainly because I wasn't certain I was in labor until it was transition time, and also because my personality overrode the Hypno techniques and I was actively coaching/talking/breathing myself through it.

I was at a birth center with a very non-interfering midwife and doula. They stood back and let me do my thing! No problems, no worries, easy birth.

In my experience, I think other meditative programs would have worked as well.

Hi J.!

First of all, Congratulations on your pregnancy!! I am a two time HypnoBirthing Mama. And, after my first amazing experience, I was so impressed that I knew I had to get certified to teach it so I could share it with as many women as possible! I have now been a HypnoBirthing Practitioner and Childbirth Educator in the Tampa Bay area for 6 six years and have loved every minute of it!

HypnoBirthing is a very calm, gentle and relaxed method of birthing where you don't have to anticipate pain or the need for medications. You learn wonderful breathing, relaxation, guided imagery and visualization techniques, as well as how to trust your body and nature's way of birthing. A lot of people are a little skeptical about the whole "hypnosis" part of what we do, but really it is just deep relaxation with a purpose. You are still aware of what is going on around you, but you are more deeply focused on what is going on with your baby and your body allowing you to assist rather than resist.

The primary difference between HypnoBirthing and other childbirth classes is that other classes will teach you how to "cope" with the pain of labor, where in HypnoBirthing, we don't believe pain has to be an accompaniment to labor, as we address the cause of the pain to begin with. That cause is ultimately fear. If you think about it, anytime you've ever been afraid of something, you probably noticed that you became tense. After a period of time, you may have become aware of the tension in your neck, your shoulders, your back or wherever you tend to hold tension and after a period of time it became painful. If you go into your labor with fear, even at the subconscious level, your birthing muscles will also become tense, tight and constricted and eventually produce pain in your body. This is known as the Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome. We use self-hypnosis to release those fears and concerns to free you from experiencing this syndrome in your labor. When you are calm and relaxed and trusting, your body works beautifully and as nature intended! It really is absolutely amazing!! I'm so thankful I've been blessed to experience it personally for both of my births, and I continue to feel blessed to share it with so many others!

Happy Birthing Day to YOU!

BIG Hugs,

Hi J.,
I attended a Hypnobirthing course and read the book, before the birth of my son. I found the audio CDs that came with the book very relaxing and great for helping you focus. The book also had some great advice on other things to consider while pregnant and preparing for labor and birth, which I found extremely helpful. I actually utilized aspects of the techniques and did 'self hypnosis' during my labor and was able to have a drug free birth. I do highly recommend going through a course and reading the book, and applying what works for you. If you would like to chat more about it, feel free to send me a personal message. Wishing you the best! L.

I used Hypnobabies with my last birth and it worked great! I actually have collected over 250 birth stories from moms using hypnosis for birth at www.pregnancybirthandbabies.com My birth video is there too. Hypnosis is a great tool for birth!
