"Hyperactive" Baby

Have any of your infants been what you would consider "hyper?" My 6 month old has always been rather active. He will not calm down to eat, to take a bath, etc. He is always moving and squirming. It is like he wants to skip the infant stage and get up and run around the room. He hates to sit and would rather us hold him to standing so that he can jump. Seriously he is constantly moving. Should I be concerned? Have your children exhibited this behavior at such a young age?

What can I do next?

...yes! Mine is now 8 months and sounds very similar. He doesn't like to sit on his own (with toys) and still isn't much into eating. He often prefers to "stand up" in the bath (cries when I try to lie him down or make him sit). He shows no interest in crawling. When I put him into his playpen he only wants to "stand" by holding onto the edges (he can't stand unaided yet). He only sits alone 'happily' in a semi-broken hammock-seat as he likes to fiddle with it. All a bit tricky when relatives tell you not to let him put weight on his legs (especially when he was younger). Argh!

My baby girl is a little over two months and doesnt like to sit or try to crawl but is happiest when we help her stand up. Im worried that she will try and walk before she learns to crawl, but it is too early to tell since she is so young. Like the others say, every baby developes differently, just go with your insticts and listen to the babies cues.

M.,
Every baby is unique in their learning styles and development. I'd say go with what he likes; use it to advantage. I teach Kindermusik classes for babies in which we learn ways to encourage learning in all areas of development--lots of moving involved. Babies learn to move and from then on, move to learn! So maybe he's ahead of the curve! Check out my website at www.kindermusikwithsherry.com.
Musically,

It looks like I am only repeating what everyone else has said - "you have an active one!" My first was very much like this and NEVER sat in a lap. We also used the johnny jumper all the time as well as a walker (safely of course). My daughter loved the mobility of the walker and used it for months. Good luck - they can be tiring because they will really keep you on your toes!

My son will be six months next Thursday and is exactly the same way. I don't call him hyper, I call him just like his Daddy! HaHa. I reckon I'll have my hands full when he can walk. Right now I try to keep him entertained with active toys like his jumperoo, exersaucer and walker. He is quite the busy fellow and when held will just jump and jump and jump.....

My son was extremely active as well (and still is at 14 months). I would watch my friends "lazy" babies the same age, and be in shock how they would lay still and be mellow.
I know it is exhausting, but try to enjoy it. Just go with it! Don't make yourself crazy thinking of ADD or something. He is normal, just an active one!!

I second reading the book. My son now 5 we like that he didnt relish in his baby hood at all he seemed so discontent with what his body couldn't do rather than what it could. I'd say he was an early walker but really Jack never walked he RAN he crawled for about 2 days until he learned he could crawl TO something to pull himself up even if it was just a wall no ledge just a wall so he could go off an run again. He was the funniest thing to watch because unlike manyother babies he never learned about balance didn't care either he just went his theory was if i go fast ad keep going i'll get there. he would literally hit one wall in the hallway bounce off hit the other . Now he is the kid at the playground who walks across the top of the monkey bars like he was born to do it. he climbs our doorways in our house. There is no 'safe' place to put things out of reach because he can reach anything I can with the same help of a stool or chair of i swear he is so like spider man and just climbs the walls when we arent looking!

Best of luck its not always an easy road but he sure makes it interesting! oh and homeschooling there is no other way we could school him he needs time to run an play not sit in a chair! we do our best work while he is dancing circles around me while im reading to him!

My niece, now 8, was called "The Wiggler" as an infant. She was in constant motion, even from the very beginning. Please do not give him a label like "hyper". Some instinctively need to move more than others in a way that isn't hyperactivity. Enjoy your active baby, and if you want, take a look at "Your Spirited Child" by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka.

My baby boy was always wanting to stand up and bounce up and down. He started to walk by himself when he was nine months old. Your son might be an early walker also.

I wouldn't use the word hyper but active.

My daughter was like that and still is.
the thing that helped us the most was getting a johnny jump up. She could stand in it and jump as long as she could, and actually my son was the same way, I even have a video of him jumping in it and 2 mins later he was asleep in it. LOL.

ours was like this with the tray on it
