To all you other camping people out there...what are your tricks to keeping a "fresh" smell while camping (like 3-4 day) and not showering. Any special products...methods...wisdom out there? What about your hair? Thanks : - )

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the fun responses...I have been a camper for many many years and just thought I would ask to see if I was missing some miracle product out there! I agree...by day 4 everyone smells the same anyway : - ) Luckily I dont have oily hair...heck its so dirty by day 4 it wouldn't look oily anyway! I just put on a hat and enjoy the dirtyness! Nothing like that "after camping" shower anyway, right? ! Thanks again : - )

Really good hiking boots...because I would hike 10 miles if I had to, just to get a shower and wash my hair!

I drink bloody marys and then I don't care :-) Actually, I just use a damp wash cloth and wipe myself down before I climb into bed. As a bit of a germaphobe it's something I really have to suck up and just get over. The bloody marys (or margaritas, or wine/beer) really help! It's camping after all.

I am not a camper, so body-wise I have no advice for you. As for your hair though, try some dry shampoo. I use the Suave brand usually about once a week or so. I generally wash my hair every other day & the in-between days don't always need to be freshened up, but sometimes it does. It pumps out into a foam & you just finger-comb it through your hair, rub it with a towel, then style it as usual. It's like magic!

get dirty and have fun! Everyone else around will be stinky too.

If you insist though, treseme sells "fresh Start", its a dry shampoo for your hair, and they make femine wipes for your other area...but you might attract bees with all that flowery stuff. :)

for the kiddos (they were 2 and 4 at the time) we would warm water on the camp stove and wash up the feet good before bed.

Wet wipes of course are a staple. Also, you can get camping soap that is not harmful to wildlife and use it to wash up in streams or rivers (same for hair, just use the special soap and a leave in conditioner). I also have a solar shower so that I can pull water out of the river and than leave it in the sun to warm, than it comes out at the end just like a regular shower.

Heat water on the fire or bbq and take a bucket into the tent or camper and wash with soap and a washcloth. Use baby wipes too, They make you feel fresh when water isnt to easy to come by. Do the same with the bucket and pour it on your head with a cup and shampoo, and rinse. Make sure to take along a biodegradable shampoo tho and be aware of any rules for contaminating water such as the lake or streams.

I use Noxzema facial wipes, personal hygiene wipes, & WetOnes for my hands. Oh, & those Noxzema ones.....work great for taking the itch out of bug bites, too! I really think they also help repel bugs to some extent.... I love them...use them daily, even at home!

diaper wipes...for body wipe downs.
baby powder and a pony tail for the hair - put the baby powder in your palms, NOT A LOT - and rub your hands together - then flip your head over and put the powder in at the roots - absorbs the oils...smells nice.
extra water helps too

When I was 18 I used baby wipes and a baseball cap.
but, I saw a product the other day that you spray in your hair to remove the oil without washing it.

Well, it depends on the situation. If there's no bath house, then you'll bring in your own water and want to use it sparingly. You can also set up a solar shower for at least one bathing experience (consider a bag per person). At the very least, get wipes of some sort (baby wipes are fine - that's what some of our military use while deployed) for quick toweling/messes and camp suds for everything from dishes to if you do your hair. We just went camping and I washed our faces with baby wipes before bed. What I might do if I didn't wash my hair for days would be to wash well before I left (no conditioner) and then braid really tight. Then I'd "spot clean" my bangs if they got greasy.

ditto baby wipes. I've taken some before and cut a small stack in half, place in small tupper ware and soak in a face astringent - super fresh on those camping mornings! You can buy camp shower bags - they are just water bags with a shower nozzel at the bottom. You hang it up and the sun heats the water up. You can shower and wash hair with a swim suit on? I have also washed my hair in a fresh water lake with bio degradable soap.

Bring some water jugs so that you can brush your teeth and wash your hands. You can use baby wipes, or they also sell wipes meant to cleanse your whole body. Maybe some "feminine" wipes since that area is delicate. And for hair you can get the dry shampoo to spray into your hair. Also, go swimming!

Definately the baby wipes. You can also get some that are for your face that remove oil, makeup etc too.

Baby powder is amazing. Because you probably wont be able to wash your hair, sprinkle in some on your hair and it absorbs all the grease, oil etc from your hair leaving it smelling good, and cleaner. I love it.

Bring travel sized tissue packs with you in your pockets. Not sure what kind of camping you are doing so its good to keep them in your pocket in case you need to go behind a tree lol!

Hand sanitizer!!

Baby wipes. Use them to clean your private areas.

If you have oily hair, you can put a little baby powder in it and brush it through.

My daughter (age 15) just walked by. She spends a lot of time at camp during the summer. Her comment "there's no such thing". I somewhat agree. Just enjoy yourself. Find a clean lake or stream and rinse off. Put your hair in a pony tail and wear a hat.

I swear by 5 Day deodorant. I like the roll on, you can order it from Amazon. I don't think it really lasts 5 days, but it does keep me from getting stinky longer than any other deodorant -- and it doesn't have that flowery smell that attracts insects. Check it out!

haha...fresh smell while camping, is that even possible :)? Really, the only thing we do is bring tons and tons of baby wipes to keep the grime off and just use the lake a lot.

Sponge type bathes. Warm up your water on the stove , dip your washcloth in the warm water add biodegradable soap. Wash up. If you're near a lake , use the lake . I always bring baby wipes with me and burn them in the campfire . Remember,if you're camping in bear country you don't want to smell too flowery or sweet.

Looks like it lost my answer ... I'll try this again ...
Baking soda, baking soda, baking soda. And wet wipes and Purell.

Baking soda for teeth, hair, body ... rub it in, leave it. Brush it on teeth and rinse away from water source.

Wet wipes for a sponge bath. Purell for tough smells ... on clothing too.

To keep 1 pair of underwear smelling fresh for days, wear a mini pad and exchange it whenever sweaty or smelly. Remember to pack it out with your trash though. Same with wet wipes. Neither bio-degrade.

Or bio-degradable soap, diluted in water, rinse 200 feet from water source so you don't contaminate the water with soap and sweat and bug-lotions you are washing off your skin.

REMEMBER - even though it is bio-degradable ... you should still use bio-deg soap AWAY from water source. Not in it. Read the labels. They are not really safe for the environment, just better 'cuz they will eventually bio-degrade but should be used 200 feet from water source and should be diluted first. I take water from the source in a large zip lock or solar bag to carry away from the water.

1. BAby wipes. They have larger wipes for "bathing" at camping stores, or places like Eastern Mountain Sports or REI.
2. Bio-degradable camp soap plus a sunshower. The sun shower is basically just a bag you fill with water, lay it in the sun to warm up (the material heats up rather quickly) then use the attached tube to shower yourself. Bring a microfiber towel for drying off; they are small but very absorbant. If you're worried about exposing yourself just hang the shower in the woods or surround it with a tarp, or wear a bathing suit.
3. DRY SHAMPOO. it's not exactly chemical free or environmentally friendly, but if you really need clean looking hair you should look into buying some of this. I found some once on Sephora.com. You just spray it onto your hair then comb it through. ALternatively you could just use some baby powder.
4. Try not to bring heavy cotton clothing. If it gets wet it will stay wet, and by day 2 will smell moldy. Bring clothing that is designed for camping/outdoor activities.Synthetic materials are usually best.

Have fun!

Solar shower! Oh, and hair powder (or put baby powder in your hair to absorb the oil).
