Humidifiers

I am getting so frustrated with the Crane humidifier I purchased for my daughter's nursery! It leaks and gets mineral deposits within a couple days of use, even after properly emptying it every day and disinfecting it with a water/bleach solution at least once a week as suggested by the manufacturer. I've also used it in my room a few times and wake up with my throat and sinuses feeling just as dry as ever, so I'm beginning to wonder how much good it is even doing.

With all that being said, I am looking for a new humidifier. I would like to have something as close to the old Hankscraft models as possible (Remember those? I don't know why they ever stopped making those marvelous humidifiers!). I would like something without a filter, EASY to clean/disinfect, and something that you can rely on to actually work. Cost is not a factor if I can get something that fits all of the above requirements. After reading reviews online, I'd like to ge some advice from you wonderful moms! Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I really like the Vicks warm mist vaporizor. No filter, no fuss, only about $10. If you have hard water issues, just add a little sea salt to the water. It's so easy to clean and use. I just love mine.

I went out and purchased one of the vicks warm air humidifiers last night since I am battle bronchitis at the moment. I could tell a noticable difference from the night before. But our plans for the future is to buy a whole house humidifier that we were recommended by a friend. His children were getting bloody noses all the time before he had it installed and it is working great he said. The company is called April Air. Good luck.

Check those ones:

I have AIR-O-SWISS 7133 Ultrasonic Warm & Cool Mist model. Not problem with cleaning, water does not have a bacteria because of silver stick inside. I’m very sensitive person for dry air , but after buying this humidifier I feel more better. Probably that will help you too.
Good luck,

I know my humidifier cleary said that it would have mineral deposits (black chunks) and that is was normal and safe.

I have a hot air vaporizer in my daughter's room and a cool air humidifier in my room. First year ever! Our colds, sinus infections etc. are way better. If I sleep somewhere else like my fiance's house I wake up totally congested and stuffy nosed.

I purchased the vicks humidifier and was dissatisfied. I recently purchased the Walgreens brand Cool Mist humdifier, it works great! I feel like I can tell a difference when I walk into our daughters room. The best thing it was only $30!

We've tried more expensive models, and now have gone back to those Vicks warm-air humidifiers...they're reliable, effective, and cheap. We bought the first one 4 years ago thinking it would be "disposable" and that one is still working as well as ever. Both kids now have them.

That said, we've discovered the trick to using them IS cleaning them out because of the extremely hard water. Our routine is we fill it, add a couple pinches of salt (KEY to getting the steam to flow), and sometimes the vapo-steam if someone is really congested or coughing. We use them for three nights, and after that we notice an extreme drop in effectiveness because of the mineral build-up. So that next morning, we take out the heating element, soak it in vinegar, and put a little bleach or vinegar in the resevoir and fill that with HOT water. Let both sit for at least an hour (or all day until I can get around to rinsing them:) ), and you're good to go for another 3 nights. Once we got into the routine of cleaning, even to the point where we know which pitcher perfectly hold the soaking heating element, we were surprised at how well it worked (for less than $20!). Just be sure that when you rinse the heating element, you tap it to dislodge those black & silver deposits from the side. Also, we're not shy about really running the water through all the nooks and crannies, and it's never hurt it either. Good luck!

Sorry to hear of your humidifier woes. I bought a super cheap Sunbeam warm air that I love. Yes I have to clean it every day. It is small, it works wonderfully, it never leaks, the base glows in the dark, it was only 15 dollars. In MN we have to have humidifiers in the winter or the kids can't breath well. I hope you find one that works well for you.

We went through 3 until we eventually chose the "cheap" Vicks brand humidifier that is nothing more than the shallow plastic container and heating element---the most basic of humidifiers. It is warm mist, which we were told (after the first cool mist one failed) is best. We have had no complaints since then.
