My 4 month old has a cold and has a lot of mucous at night. I elevate her mattress or put her in the car seat to sleep but my question is~are warm air humidifiers better or cool mist humidifiers? I have used a vapor plug in for my older daughter and that works well but they are not sutable for infants.

What can I do next?

From what I understand, there's no difference. By the time the warm water is spit out, it's cold. It's just a difference in how it works. It take less energy to do the cool mist than to heat the warm. I'd just get whatever you can find cheapest!

I use a Vix Vaporizor. They are only about $10 and come with the vix vapor; I bought mine 5 years ago and still have plenty of vix vapor left. They are also made now that you can just plug into the outlet, but I haven't used one of those. Hope that helps.

Hello,
I have always heard that cool mist is better only from a safety standpoint. We use a warm mist for our daughter that has saftey devices on it and she knows it is hot and does not touch it. I guess it depends on the age and the child. The warm mist works good for our daughter. Best wishes!

Our doctor recommends the cool mist humidifier. We run them in each bedroom from the time we turn the heat on in the fall till we turn it off in the spring.

You'll get a different answer everywhere you ask!!
At 4 months I don't think you'll have a problem with the baby knocking over a warm humidifier but if she shares a room with her sis then better safe than sorry.
I've been told that the cool mist humidifiers are a great place for bacteria to grow.
As an infant my son had the exact same problem and I used a cool mist humidifier with great results. Now that my kids are older, I love my Vicks vaporizer but with tea tree oil ( I think someone else may have mentioned this one) but I didn't know about it when they were tiny so I'm not sure about the suitability for infants.
The one thing doctors do still agree on is saline drops. Little Noses is the brand I use but I think Johnson and Johnson just came out with one. With a little one you'll just want to tilt her head back and drip them in rather than spray up her nose. Let it sit for a moment, use a little suction and you're good for a couple of hours.
Godd luck! It's hard when they're so small but you'll get everyone through it : )

I was always told to use a cold mist humidifier by my mom, grandma, friends and doctor. My son will be one this tues and I have been using it for many months now. It does work! Make sure to put the humidifier on a chair or something that makes it higher....the mist will fall down and this way your floor doesn't get all wet.

I was always a humidifier user because of our house being dry due to the heat. I still use one on a regular basis, but we are all congested and sick right now and I have a Vicks Vaporizer to help break up the yuckies.....
I am really unsure on when I should use one vs. the other, I am learning by trial and error, I will keep an eye on this post to see if I can learn something too !!!

When my daughter was this age, she was hospitalized with an upper respitory virus and we were told by the doctors and nurses to use a cool mist vaporizor. Up until that point I didn't even know that they existed or that there was a difference but we got one and it worked great for us! Good luck and God bless!

When my 2 yr son was that age and with a cold, we used a cold mist humidifier and it worked very well. My doctor also recommended that while it was cool outside to bundle him up and take him outside for the cool air. Something about the cool clean air helps the healing process. I hope and pray the cold gets better

I like the warm air for this time of year, especially since you can put vapor medication in it. Just make sure it has a night light and be careful of the steam, as you could burn yourself. Cool mist is also fine, but I tended to have trouble with the filters getting moldy. I suppose its a matter of preference!

It really depends on who you talk to as to what answer you'll get. We were first told to use cold air humidifiers, and then warm....it changes constantly. What really cracked me up was when we mentioned one to the pediatrician's office "we were told to use cold air humidifiers" the response we'd get was, "Oh - don't use those, we haven't told people to use those in years..." I responded, "It was last week!"

That being said, we've always had good luck with cool mist humidifiers. We figured with our first daughter getting a croupy cough, they said to take her outside in the "cool night air" and that hasn't changed, so that's what we went with.

Good luck!

my daughter had RSV at 2mo. & 3 mo. of age, i thought her bulb syringe was part of my hand as the days went by. we were told to use a cool mist humidifier in her room and elevate the head of he crib and have her sleep on her side if possible, so the mucus could drain to the nostril and allow her one open airway through her sinuses. it worked pretty well, but i had bought a "nyquil menthol fan" it's like the plug in airfreshners with the fan, only you don't plug it in. you can point the fan in any direction you want it to blow. i noticed a big improvement in her breathing when i used them together. good luck & God bless.

Cool mist humidifier! We have used both, and have seen the best results with the cool mist one. PLUS, you don't have to worry about your little ones being burned by the cool mist ones like the warm mist ones. I also use essential oils with my humidifier - and the cool mist doesn't break down the good stuff in the oils like the warm mist ones do. (Technically an oil diffuser would work best for oils, but that's not what you asked...:-)

My pediatrician recommends the cool mist for 2 reasons: Warm air tends to make the nasal passages smaller which makes it even more difficult to breathe. The other reason is that once your child becomes more active, the warm mist can be a burn risk if they accidentally knock it over. We use the cool mist with our 1 month old and it has been helping a lot with the congestion. I hope that helps!

Might want to also check into eucalyptus oil. This is a HUGE help in breaking up the mucus and assisting in improved breathing! You can even put a couple drops on the pillow (either side of where head is) and it will help. We also just use it by opening the bottle and breathing it. It can be used in humidifiers, as well.
