How to Ween My 4 Year Old off of Her Pacifier.

My beautiful 4 year old girl still "needs" her nook at night and occasionally during the day when she has quiet time. I have hesitated to take it from her because it is such a security helper for her and helps her to fall asleep. At her first dental visit, the dentist definitely wants her to stop using it before it causes problems. I would appreciate any ideas on how to help.

What can I do next?

Tie it to a balloon and let it fly away to another child.
Put it under a pillow and let the fairy take it for another child.
Give it to a friend with a baby (just make sure the other mom knows what you are doing)
Put it in a memory box for the child
Dig a hole in the yard and cover it with dirt, the child will love to dig!
These are just some ideas my friends and I have used with our kids!

Dear K.,

I have a friend who took her daughter to "Build a Bear" and they put it inside the bear. Then her daughter could dress the bear and make it cute, get it closed up and then still have her pacifier with her at night, just in a different way. Good Luck!

We took our sons binky away cold turkey. He was down to only using it for nap and bedtime, which helped dramatically. He has other "loveys" that he became more attached too, which is no problem since they won't affect his teeth. I would talk to her about being a big girl and giving up the binky. We did that for about a week and then one night I just layed my son down with no binky. He cried for about 20 minutes, then went to sleep. The next night was 10 minutes of crying. After that, he didn't cry for it anymore, but searched around his crib for it for about 5 days. Good luck!

We had the "binky fairy" come when HE threw his pacifier away (there were holes in it so he knew it was time). The first night he cried and then remembered the binky fairy was going to come and leave him a surprise since he let his binky go to heaven for another new baby being born. That next morning he got 3 quarters and was ecstatic! He told everyone about it and said he wanted to save his quarters to buy candy...the second night he cried a little and asked if the fairy was coming again and we replied that we didn't know. The fairy did come and left 2 quarters...and the third night he got 1 quarter...after that he asked for one but he knew he threw it away and the fairy gave it to another baby to enjoy. He was 2.5 yrs when we did this and he still talks about the binky fairy and asks when she is coming for his friends binkies! Good luck! We tried other ways that didn't work but when he threw it away by himself and when he was ready I think that helped him a ton!
