How to Keep Blankets On?

My son, who turned 2 in October, likes to be quite warm (but not too hot) when he sleeps. The problem is that he is constantly kicking off his blankets and then getting cold, requiring one of us to go in, soothe him a little, and cover him back up to get back to sleep. It's not that it takes so long, but I would sometimes like to sleep through the night : ) Any tips how to get blankets to stay on him? He's big - the size of a 3 year old, and he's still in a crib (but we're hoping to move him to a "big boy bed" in the not too-distant future). Thanks for any advice!

I agree with some other posts...go for a Halo Sleep Sack; they now make them large enough for 'bigger' toddlers. I put my daughter in her feety pj's and then in the sleep sack and she sleeps soundly all night...and toasty warm too ;-)

My advice is to forget about blankets! We had our child in blanket sleepers over his pajamas for years. They even have hand covers if that's helpful. Helpful hint - since the legs are often too long, and when he walked, the "feet" part slipped down and tripped him, we used adult size sweat bands (available with the exercise gear in any store) and slipped them around his ankles. The "feet" stayed on and the excess fabric in the legs just billowed out a little. We got a lot of wear out of the sleepers by buying them on the large side, he was warm, and we all slept all night.

Good luck!

We love sleepsacks, but for a toddler we prefer footed sleepers. This way he can walk around when he wakes up on a chilly morning. We simply layer a snug-fitting pajama under a fleece sleeper (you can find heavy and light weights) and our little guy is cozy all night. We do start out with a light fleece blanket, but he doesn't stay put.

Halo makes fleece sleepsacks in big-kid sizes, and basically, it's a wearable blanket. My son is 3 and he wears the 2-3T size and it is perfect (he's wearing 4T tops/3T bottoms). You can order them online at halosleep.com -- they are called the Big Kid's Sleepsack.

There's nothing you can do to keep blankets on. Our 1 1/2 y.o. uses one of those sleep sacks, which is awesome. They do sell them in large sizes, but I can't remember how big they go. If they weren't long enough, you could probably extend them by cutting off the bottom below the zipper and adding a strip of fabric, then sewing the bottom back on. This is the only thing that worked for us with my youngest, who always kicks off the blankets. We actually put a footed sleeper on and the sleepsack over, so she's nice and toasty and doesn't usually awaken anymore. Good luck.

Dear J.,
I'm seventy-five and also is married to a great guy and a good dad.
We had five children who also got uncovered and this is what we did. Take a crib blanket on your standing child or laying child long ways across his chest, Take the two ends and- wrap under the arms and across the back, this will cross the blanket in the back, now take the two ends and bring them up and over the shoulders, Now Tuck the two ends in the inside of the blanket chest front, Use a large safety pin to fasten. I know what your thinking. We never had that pin open and no more uncovered child. They wore them up to four year. I wish I could draw this. But if you play with this I think you will get it. It works real well.

I don't think there is any way to keep blankets on.

Warm pajamas are your best bet. My daughter sweats A LOT when she first falls asleep, I unbutton her top and keep her cooler during that time, later before I go to sleep, I button her up.

They make sleep sacks for toddlers. I highly reccomend. They have foot holes too. Hard to find in stores but you can order them online. I believe Halo makes them.

have you tried one of the sleep sacks? they make extra large size, but if your son is tall it might not fit him. my son is 1 yr old and 31 inches tall and he is in a size large, and there is still about at least 8 inches of slack from his foot to the bottom. otherwise, you could try to keep his room extra warm by getting a space heater maybe? be sure to draw the curtains at night, so much heat can escape through windows/glass. i put my son in fleece pjs AND the sleep sack andso far it gives him a much better sleep bc he is nice and cozy.

Try a Grobag sleep sack. You can order via amazon or keen distribution. My son is 42in tall & has plenty of room in the 18-36 mos size. Summer weight 0.5 tog, mid wt 1.5 tog, winter warm 2.5 tog.. My 3 mos daughter uses one too & sleeps 8 hr nights already. Good luck!
