Hi! I need some advice on how to go from formula to milk. When our oldest turned a year old, we stopped the formula and gave her milk in a sippy cup and she has loved it ever since. Our youngest turned a year old last week and I tried the same thing. She made a face like I was giving her poison after her first sip! I have tried putting 2 ounces of formula into a sippy cup and adding about 2 ounces of milk and she cannot stand the taste either. I am so ready to be done with bottles and to stop buying the formula and I know she needs the milk now, I just don't know how to get there. Should I keep trying to mix formula and milk or do I just put milk in a cup alone and keep sticking it in front of her in hopes she will come around? Thanks in advance for the help!!

What can I do next?

Well.....my son would never take white milk. So....we add a teaspoon of chocolate Nesquik (sugar free) to his milk and he loves it. It also constains tons of vitamins, iron, and calcium which makes me feel good about giving it to him. Good luck!!

This was posted by another mamasource mom a few weeks back, I have not asked her permission to re-post it, so I hope she doesn't mind but very informative with the milk issue.

Please don't worry about her not liking milk. It's really not good for humans anyway. Please go to www.strongbones.org to learn more.

I am a former milk lover. I drank milk regulary until I was 45 years old. Through education I learned that cow's milk is for making baby cows get big really fast. The proteins in cow's milk are an allergen to many people. We are the only species on this planet that drinks the milk of another animal.

Besides soy, which must be organic, you can also offer your daughter almond or rice milk, which is what we use at our house now instead of cows milk. She'll do just fine by drinking only water.

If you are concerned with calcium, I have information that I can share with you that lists all kinds of great food that has lots of calcium in it. Broccoli, kale and bok choy are 3 that come to mind. Sesame seeds also have alot of calcium. You can give your daughter hummus, which is made with chick peas and tahini (ground sesame seeds). Of the 300 mg of calcium in milk, only about 32% is useable. 54% of calcium in bok choy is usable. So, looking at usable calcium instead of just the total amt found in the food, 1 cup of milk only has 96 mg of calcium while kale has 106 mg, bok choy at 85 mg. An even more accurate comparison would be to look at usable calcium per 100 calories of food consumed: skim milk, 107 mg and bok choy 425 mg. Broccoli has 100 mg of usable calcium per 100 calories.

Please visit the website I've shared with you. I also believe that milk does cause allergic symptoms which can be mistaken for a cold. Another big problem is that the protein in milk sometimes makes the body have a reaction to the insulin producing cells in the pancreas and is believed to be a major cause of Type 1 diabetes.

Hi M.,

If your daughter is getting 3 servings of dairy in other forms, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc... she doesn't NEED milk. They need the fat from the milk for proper brain development .. .and quite honestly she can get that from other sources as well. Avacado, real butter, meat, etc...

If she is getting a good balance of nutrition and whole foods...then she really doesn't need the milk.

I would try and do the half and half in a bottle if that is what she is use to drinking the formula out of! Then when she gets the hang of it put the milk in a cup, be patient and take it one step at a time good luck!!

When I took my 1 year old off of milk, I changed it 1 ounce at a time (2 ounces if you're in a hurry)

Week 1 - 1 ounce milk, 7 ounces formula
Week 2 - 2 ounces milk, 6 ounces formula
Week 3 - 3 ounces milk, 5 ounces formula
Week 4 - 4 ounces milk, 4 ounces formula
Week 5 - 5 ounces milk, 3 ounces formula
Week 6 - 6 ounces milk, 2 ounces formula
Week 7 - 7 ounces milk, 1 ounce formula
Week 8 - all milk

Voila! It worked perfectly for my son. No faces, no fussiness, no milk strike.

Good luck!

I mixed the milk with vanilla flavored soy milk for the first few weeks and that helped. Good luck!

A few questions: have you given her other liquids (like juice) in a sippy before? If so, milk/formula would be a rude surprise if that was not her expectation from a sippy(remember that they don't like change by this time).
Question 2: have you given her cold formula/milk before in a bottle or has it been warmed? It may be that the temperature is a shock to her.
Try putting a milk/formula combo in her bottle first and then gradually get it to all milk before introducing the sippy. Start warm and then cool down the temp until it's cold from the fridge.

Hi,
I had the same response when I first introduced milk. A friend said wait 2 weeks and try again and it was fine. My child loves milk now. See if that works.

Try almond or rice milk. Cow's milk for cows, they say. If it doesn't work, there are other sources of calcium

Try adding Carnation Instant Breakfast mix (I like Vanilla) to the milk.
