My son is 1 year old and the doctor said that we could start him on milk. Has anyone done this successfully? He vomited when we gave him a whole bottle of milk(after building it up giving 2 more ounces of milk each bottle) does this mean he is allergic or that it was too much at once? please help!!! Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions! Yes, the experiments are wonderful! haha I think I'll do the half and half and warm it up for him. I will also try some cottage cheese with fruit, tried it before plain and he spit up! lol The fruit is a great idea! Thanks again everyone! M.

all good posts there.
Remember that at a year they suggest we start gettin goff the bottle as well...
what about milk in a sippy cup?>
I also think the idea of giving lower fat milk is good, 2%, even 1%.
My son is 9 months next week, and loves his sippy cup! I got him some with two handles on them, and let him practice in his high chair at every meal with water. The Nuby ones are no-leak!!!
Also, if you are concerned about him not drinking enough milk at one time, offer some alternative dairy fat & calcium sources.. like cottage cheese (with some added fruit) or low fat pudding. Also tropicana has juices with a calcuim boost.
Good luck.

Hi M....
Are you doing half formula half milk?? That's what I did to wean my daughter and it worked out great! Chances are if he was on regular formula then he won't be allergic to whole milk. This is what I would do... if your not doing the half and half then try that and if you are already doing that maybe try giving him an ounce of whole milk and see how he does, if he gets sick again then I'd call the pediatrician. If not then just take it really slow. Is he eating cheese, yogurt...etc?? Because if he can eat those things without a problem then he definitely shouldn't be allergic to whole milk. Of course I'm not a doctor I'm just giving you my thoughts! Good luck with everything and let us know how things go!!! Take care .. K.

He could be allergic. My son could not do the whole milk. I had him on lactaid milk for about a year and then weaned him to milk. now he has milk, ice cream and yogurt no problem. i would try the lactaid, it is more expensive then milk but cheaper than formula. they have it in whole lactaid at the grocery store.

Hi M.,

Are you giving him the milk warm or cold? My son had a problem when we tried this a couple of months ago. (We tried milk watered down and he didn't like it, we tried milk mixed with his formula and he bulked at it. We tried cold milk and he was so-so with it (just thinking also a whole bottle of cold milk might be a little rough on the warm belly). It wasn't until we warmed up the milk that he started drinking it. It did take a while for him to adjust to the milk before he'd drink a whole bottle, and even then his stool got loose, but maybe over a two week's time, his body adjusted to it and he started taking a full bottle of it. This experiment's exciting isn't it LOL, couldn't tell you how many differing opinions I got!

HELLO M. I'M A MOTHER OF FOUR CHILDREN I'M ALSO 27 YEARS OLD IF I WAS YOU I WOULD GIVE HIM 2 OUNCES OF MILK AND TWO OUNCES formula MAKE IT 50/50 THEN DO 50/75 BUT MORE OF THE MILK AND NOT THE FOURMULA. EVERY WEEKS TRY TO ADD MORE OF THE MILK BUT NO FOURMULA WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS SLOWY BREAKING HIMINTO THE MILK MAYBE IT WAS JUST TO FAST TO START HIM ON IT SO DO IT SLOW IF HE CAN NOT DO THAT I WOULD CALL YOUR DOCTOR BECAUSE I WOULD SAY HE CAN'T HAVE MILK. GOOD LUCK R.

Whole milk is really rich, I had a glass at a friends house last week after 6 months of 1% at home and I got a tummy ache , lol.
For both of my girls I watered it down at first, half and half to start then slowly adding less water of a couple of months. At one year most of his nutrition is coming from reall food anyway, and with summer coming the extra water certainly won't hurt.

my daughter did the same thing when we switched her to milk... and now she is fine... the way we did it was i mixed the formula with milk ... measure the formula the way u would normally and then instead of water add milk... then gradually reduce the formula intill it is all milk... it may take a couple of weeks ... u might also try 2% milk or reduced fat ... mix it with whole and then gradually reduce it until its plain whole milk... if that dose not work then i would talk to your doc and see if there is something else to try.... good luck and remember there is a light at the end of the tunnelll
