My daughter came down with a cold this morning....sneezing, dry cough and a fever of around 100. Tylenol is giving her some relief, and Im loading her up on juices and orange slices (vitamin C!!), but wondering if any one knows any other remedies to help her feel better fast! Her Second birthday party is Saturday and we want her WELL!!! Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses everyone! I didnt get a chance to use some of the things you suggested because she woke up this morning completely fine. No fever or coughing. Maybe it was just a 24 hour virus of sorts. That and all the praying I did for her yesterday! Thanks for the responses and I will definately try some of these things the next time a cold comes around!

Steamy bathroom and some saline drops for her nose. Other than that there is not much. Fluids are the best medicine. Good luck. I to have a sick child this week.

Try lipton green tea with lemon. I know she is young but I used it at the beginning of the year with tsp of sugar and it really helped me feel better.

I have 4 kids and have found that the Airborne (kid) products work well. I try to stay away from all the cold meds b/c they don't seem to do much good. She might be too young for the Airborne products now. My kids like the new Airborne Kid Power Pixies. The box says they are for kids ages 4-12 and my four are all between that age range. They really have helped them if I am able to start them when the cold first begins to appear. I get them at the grocery store, drug store, etc.

Hi S.,
I read about your daughter's illness and felt your anguish about it with the birthday event coming up. It's never a good time to get sick but even more annoying when you know something is planned that cannot be changed...or can it? My brother and his wife celebrated my nephew's birthday two weeks later because they said he doesn't know the difference anyway at that age. Everyone was able to attend at that time and he was over his cold completely by then.
Secondly, if you know someone who is a Vemma Distributor in your hometown, get some from them and start her on 1/4 ounce 3 times a day for several days until the symptoms subside and then drop back to 1/4 oz twice a day after that. Vemma is an acronymn for Vitamins Essential Minerals Mangosteen and Aloe. There's Green Tea in there too but they didn't call it VemmaGT for some reason. ;-) Anyway, the mangosteen is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, reduces fevers and an immunostimulant, which means it boosts the body's immune system. I have a couple of double-blind placebo controlled studies that were conducted recently that show the result of Vemma on adults for a 30 day period if you will send me an email address where I can send it to you. The best way to get over a cold is to not get it to begin with! Prevention goes a long way but unfortunately Americans have a "reactive" approach to health and wellness. Proactive actions would be to get on Vemma and stay on it, knowing that it's keeping you well, lowering your cholesterol, regulating your blood sugar, keeping inflammation down which is the first stage of ALL disease and boosting your immune system, keeping you resistant to "catching" anything to begin with. My family rarely ever gets sick, but when we do, we get over it in a couple of days when most people have lingering coughs that last a couple of weeks after the main event. My daughter had terrible allergies the spring of her third year and I put her on Vemma for three days and her symptoms were completely gone! Sometimes when the pollen count is very high, I will double her dose for a few days, or if we feel like "something" is trying to come on us, you know, the scratchy throat feeling, we double up on our Vemma. Many times we never get any further symptoms because we have "nipped it in the bud" as Barney Fife would say! ;-)
Adults take 2 oz a day and children from 2 to 12 use only an ounce. Check out the Member Perks section and look for VemmaVenture, visit my website for more information and you will see my daughter on that site, holding a huge flower! God Bless you and your family...and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUR DAUGHTER!

P.S. After reading the other responses, I remembered that I used Eucalyptus Radiata essential oil on our chests when we have a cold too. It is also an immunostimulant and will open the airways & sinuses too. Be sure it's Radiata and not Globulus. The G one has some bad properties to it and is the most common one you find in the health food stores for some reason! ;-) Be well and don't forget to pray for healing when you anoint her with that oil!

Airborne for kids. Now you will of course have to check the label for the ages and such, but my husband uses it every time he gets sick and swears it shortens an illness by a couple days at least. I bought some for the kids but haven't had to use it yet, thank God. It is packed with vitamins and just helps to fight the illness and boost immunity. I don't remember seeing anything harmful in it at all. Of course you have to use according to package instructions, suggestions..blah, blah! :)

Zinc is the best for recovering from a cold quickly - although it's better if they take it as early on as possible (but it still really helps lessen the symptoms and duration even if taken later). You can cut a "Coldeeze" or similar product in half and give it to her (they are like candy, so that's easy), or else just get some zinc tablets (very inexpensive) and crush it up and mix it in her food (I'd do about a 1/2 a tablet a day, but that's just me and I'm certainly not a doctor. You can look up proper amounts for children on line I'm sure). Herbs that really help are Echinacea and Elderberry (a lot of times these are sold in combination, but you can find them separately as well) - you can get these at health food stores and some drug stores sell them. If in tea form, if she'll drink it, fine (I put Stevia powder in it to sweeten it up), or else use an eye dropper to give it to her. Those should really help her to get well sooner. God bless and I hope your birthday party goes well!

Anything that contains zinc will help. If she is old enough to handle cough drops, there are some that contain Vit. C & Zinc that work well. If not the cough drops, there are some cold remedies that contain zinc. Look for an age appropriate mixture. Echinaecia (sp?) and Golden Seal help too

S., I hope your precious baby girl is still better. I would love to speak with you about an all natural product that can help to keep her well. Her immune system can be strengthened to help fight off things. Watch her sugar intake. Sugar suppresses the immune system for 4 to 6 hours. If you would like more information, just call me ###-###-####.

Based on the interactions I have had with both pediatricians and family practitioners, I wouldn't give her any Tylenol or Motrin unless the fever gets above 102. A fever is the body's natural way of fighting off an infection and so by reducing it, we sometimes prevent our kids from fighting off the infection on their own. Try not giving her Tylenol again unless her fever gets above 102. After that point, most will advise you to go ahead and give them something for comfort purposes. Hopefully the juices and orange slice will also boost her immune system so that she is healthy enough to enjoy her party!

No offense, but if she's not feeling well, she probably won't be up for partying, whether or not you want her to. If you push her to 'recover' quickly, she may end up becoming more sick. I am sure your guests would understand if you had to reschedule - - not to mention, are you willing to risk your guests becoming sick because they may get infected by your daughter?

REST! Fluids (may want to make some juice popsicles from half-diluted concentrate), moderate exercise and food intake, comfy/cozy surroundings, low doses of Tylenol (helps headache & muscle aches as well as fever), and REST! Maybe even a little Benadryl to help dry her nose and help her sleep. Otherwise, it just has to run its course. And, as someone said, postpone the party if necessary. One of our kids' birthday is Dec. 16, and since it's so close to Christmas w/bad weather, etc, we had him a 6-and-a-half year party on June 16. He loved it! (He's 28, now! LOL)

I agree on not giving her tylenol for the lower temps, as that is impeding her body's attempt to heal her.

I also hear Sambucol is good.
