How to get rid of bad diaper rash on infant?

My daughter is ten months old she is currently crawling and beginning to take steps. Last week she got a really bad diaper rash on her side. When we were at the doctor he said to just get her bigger diapers (she is about 17lbs wearing size 2 which goes to 18lbs). So I took his word for it and went out and got bigger diapers. Well the only things this seems to be doing is giving her a rash all over her back and on the sides of her upper legs, not to mention the mess it is leaving because the diapers are WAY TOO BIG!! My question is does anyone know how to get rid of a bad diaper rash? I have two types of cream- one is a store brand and the other is Balmex. Please help I feel so bad my daughter gets so upset when we go to change her now~!

Thank you everyone who has left messages already. Many of you said that I should try a new brand of diapers. My question then is... We have always used huggies from the day she was born, can she just one day become allergic?

What can I do next?

Summary

Use a protective barrier cream or ointment on the area after each diaper change. Check the diaper frequently, and change it when wet. Use a gentle perfume-free soap or even just plain water when cleaning the area. Make sure the diaper area is quite dry before putting on a fresh diaper. Let your baby's bottom free of diaper for 20-30 minutes, if rash persists consult your pediatrician.

You might also want to try changing the brand of diapers. My daughter started to develop a reaction to the brand so I had to change but corn starch is also good on rashes. Also it could be the soap or detergant you are using also. Good luck!

Have you tried Aveeno Oatmeal baths and their rash cream? Also, allowing the air to hit her bare bottom will help. My sister's little girl had the same problem, and she switched brands as well. And to answer the question about the allergies, it's not something overnight, but perhaps it started out small being treated with Balmex but developed over time. If she is moving around, there may be something in Huggies that doesn't agree with her when she sweats.

My daughter had a really bad diaper rash once, and the doctor had me mix Maalox-(regular minty)with aquaphor (in the lotion area of many stores-it has a blue top), and make it into a paste, and rub it on her rash.. i actually always have a tupperware of it on me at all times!! Its amazing!!

Please let me know if you have any questions about it!

i don't know how many responses you've gotten already, but my son forced me to be well educated on diaper rash. if it's really bad, obviously let it air dry. then use lotrimin cream and top it off with either desitin, butt paste or triple paste (sold behind the counter at the pharmacy). this technique has worked like a charm every time-better than the prescription diaper rash creams!

My son also dealt with major diaper rashes. His stomach was not digesting the food properly and it would cause acidic burns and open sores on his bottom. I've tried every cream out there. The thing that seems to work best is cornstarch. I really wish I would have found out about cornstarch much sooner as it works great for him.

Good luck!!!

I swear by the aveeno diaper rash cream. My daughter is 7 months old, 17lbs., and has been wearing size 3 for a while. She is by no means a big baby either. Size 2 was becoming too tight even though 3 is slightly big. It may also be the brand of diaper irritating her.

I am blessed with 2 sweet boys with very sensitive skin. They are very prone to diaper rash. I tried every cream and ointment I could get my hands on but most of them actually made it worse, since they would irritate the skin more. Finally my grandmother told me to try corn starch, and I am here to tell you that it was my 79 cent miracle in a box!! LOL
I would put a sprinkling of that on the diaper rash and it was almost gone by morning. I now with my second just sprinkle a little on his diaper and it keeps the diaper rash away. Hope this helps :) I also had to be very careful with the wipes I used, as they would irritate as well.

have you tried a different brand of diapers? my daughter used to be allergic to some of them.

also she may possibly have a yeast rash. they start out looking like a normal diaper rash but only get worse and nothing works.

if it is a normal rash a different rash cream may work .

good luck and if it doesn't get better i would bring her back to the doctors.

C., sorry to hear your little one is going through this. The diaper rash could be a result of something new she's eating, a new chemical (laundry detergent, etc) or if she's teething. See if one of these could be a factor and carefully watch her exposure to any new things that could be causing this. Does she have plenty of "naked time" with clean skin (no creams, etc)? That should help as well. Have you considered cloth diapers at all? We use those on my son and have never had an issue with diaper rash since the moisture is pulled away from baby's skin.

Triple Paste. It is a wonder. They keep it behind the counter at the pharmacy sometimes (in Target it's behind the counter, in Walgreens it's with the other rash cream). It is a LIFESAVER. My pediatrician recommended it and I would never use anything else again. It's kind of expensive, but well worth the money because it gets rid of a rash in probably record time. LOL. You can also buy it online at sites like www.drugstore.com or buy searching google.

I'd also either get a 2nd opinion from another pediatrician or go back to yours to have her rechecked for either an allergy to the diapers or a yeast or bacterial infection. When my daughter had a really bad rash, my doctor diagnosed her with a yeast infection, gave me a prescription and it cleared up right away.

Walgreens carries a product called Diaperx(it comes in a box of 6 doppers(easy to use)) along with a cloth diaper ( I recommend Kushies(a All in one velcro closure diaper). Within a day, her rash would be gone. It seemed like when a tooth was cutting, the rash was the worst(blisters). This worked for me. Hope it helps

Hi C.,
Your poor baby girl! My 5 mo & 2 yr old both get terrible rashes. My baby's bleed. Her doctor prescribed Nystatin. It's only about $16 and lasts for a long time. It quickly cleared up her rash (within a day or two). My babies both cry in pain when I use the Buttpaste on their rashes so use the Balmex for regular rashes and if it gets bad (like when they are teething) we alternate between the Nystat & Balmex/Baby Powder).

Allergies can develop at any time! Also, Huggies has just changed their diapers (both regular & supreme) so they may have added new chemicals or cloths that they didn't use to have in them! Try changing diaper brands and also you can try using the Pampers gentle as water wipes. They are water, no alcohol nothing that is abrasive. I used these when my doctor said to wipe Michelle with water and hand towels. Since we couldn't do that every 1-2 hrs (she was a newborn) and watch a 18 mo old we tried these wipes. They were great. We use them when they have bad rashes. If your daughter is old enough and in a lot of pain, you can also give her some baby motrin or tylenol. My oldest can't sleep when she has a bad rash. I put the Nystat on her, put the diaper on and then give her baby motrin before bed so she can sleep comfortably.

Provided you didnt recently change diaper wipes or soap than I would use Dr. Boudreaux's Butt paste (Walmart). It's expensive but well worth it-fixes everything. Unless it could be a yeast infection (would mainly be vaginal area not back and sides) in which case monistat works well as a diaper cream to fix. Stop using diaper wipes for awhile-use wet papertowel or washcloth; let her run without a diaper for periods of time to air out; go back to the smaller diapers. I am hesitant to change diapers during a rash in case they make it worse or in case it is due to something else - too many variables. Publix brand are awesome by the way!-Hope it helps.

It also works great for preventing them, if this doesn't help I suggest changing the diaper brand like everyone else has said too. Good Luck!!

Best thing you can do for a diaper rash like that is this. Give her a nice long soak in a tub of warm water with 1/2 cup baking soda and 2 cups of oatmeal. Just regular stuff works. Run it through the blender so it'll be small enough to go down the drain when your done.(MUCH cheaper then Aveno) Let her soak about 15 minutes or longer if she wants. Then take her out pat her dry with a towl, DON'T rub, then take her outside and let her airdry in the sun. If she can't be entirely nude because of prying eyes, put a floppy loose dress on her to cover her but make sure its loose in the rash area. Naked is best, the sun is good for the rash. Let her hang out like that about ten minutes. You don't want the rash to get too much sun. Then use your cream, doesn't really matter what kind, and diaper her. Do this a couple times a day until it clears up. If after a couple days you see no improvement, see about getting her checked for a yeast infection. Babies can get them ouside the girl area and they can be really hateful and difficult to get rid of. Let me know if it works!!

CORN STARCH! Creams tend to hold in the heat and help to keep the diaper close to the skin corn starch is a drying agent and really helped alot when my 16 year old son was a baby. Just get a shaker bottle and fill it half way so you have roon in the bottle so the powder will shake and try using an oatmeal bath like when they have chicken pox these tricks will ease the pain your baby is feeling. Oh you might try the smallest pull ups as a diaper change they tend to have less plastic and they tear down the side and she may have fun putting a new one on good luck

my question would be this- has it just developed since she has been crawling? if so- there might be someting on the floor she is having a reaction to. it happened to a friend of mine. she was cleaning her carpets with that powdered, vacume up stuff, and her son got a horrible rash from it. i doubt it would be from the diapers if they are the same you have always used. your child might be cursed with sensitive skin, also if the rash is where the diaper is not, ie the legs, i would look at other causes.

It sounds to me that you may want to not only try a different diaper rash ointment but possibly a different brand of diapers. I use Desenex on my 7 month old twin girls and it clears the rashes in 24 hours. I was allergic to allergic to Pampers as a child and my hubby was allergic to every diaper other than Pampers his Dr. even gave him a Rx for them! Sometimes it can be an allergy to the elastic that is in the waistband. I hope this helps!

My mother always told me that the best cure for a diaper rash is air. She told me that whenever I change him, clean him up, then lift his legs up and use the diaper to fan air at his bottom area for two to five minutes. Ofcourse, make sure you have all the proper arrangements incase there is an accident. She also said that after a bath, assuming that they peed in the bathtub, dry him and let him be naked for a bit. It dries out the moisture where bacteria and yeast can grow, causing these rashes and infections. If you are uncomfortable with leaving them without a diaper from fear of accident, even as little time as two minutes would help, then put some powder with cornstarch in the diaper and on the leg rolls to make sure there is no moisture trapped. She also told me to clean him with some warm water if he does have a rash via washcloth, cotton balls, or even just in the sink so that the wipes wont irritate him and it will get better faster.

After every bath, I let my son roll around and crawl naked on a blanket, in his crib, or on my bed for at least five minutes to let him air dry. Then I put powder with cornstartch *I have johnsons* and rub it especially around his leg rolls and where the diaper edges are so that he is nice and dry before putting the diaper on. Thankfully, he has not had a diaper rash. I also put some around his "area" right before he lays down to bed so that him laying on a wet diaper all night wont irritate him much. In the morning, I clean him really good with a warm washcloth, air dry for a few minutes, then let him go on with his morning routine so that he is nice and clean.

Try the air tactic, along with some of the other advice given to you with the ointments. I have been told that A&D have a formula that prevents, treats, and is clear so that there is no mess all over your fingers. Good luck, and hope that your daughter feels much better.

My kids used to develop rashes because of foods that they were eating. For instance, if they ate grapes they would get a rash so bad that they would scream the whole time I changed their diapers. They are fine now that they are all out of diapers can eat grapes again. So it may be that she is having a food problem. You should also ask about a yeast infection. I agree with the other people who responded saying let her run around as much as possible without a diaper on.

The rash may be aggrevated by the diapers and caused by some other allergy. I have kids who had lots of allegies and I made a change in my life and home that made a huge difference in my children and myself. I started doing research on the effects of everyday household chemicals in the home on the human body. I found some horrifying facts, many that explained most of our allergies, rashes, and even sicknesses. I discovered a way to have better, safer and CHEAPER products in my home and now my 2 year old daughter who suffered with eczema that scarred her skin does not have break outs any more and her scars are healed. My allergies have stopped flaring up. My 14 year old who always had rashes all over his body, has beautiful skin now. There have been a lot more improvements. I have a cream that is all natural and has melaleuca oil in it that I use on my daughter's bottom (all over actually) but is works wonders on rashes and chaffness.

Visit: www.saferforyourhome.com
also the EPA website for kids has a virtual house that takes you room by room and explains the effects of each chemical in your house. Check it out. It may help.

So far, everyone has mentioned topical barrier creams which prevent wetness from touching the skin ... Has she been on any medications? My boys would often develop fungus type diaper rash (Yes, YEAST infections of the baby-kind) when taking antibiotics or having specific immunizations. The diaper DOES need to be little bit big, you really can't be "just fitting" into the right size becasue it keeps the urine and -uhm- everything else-- so tightly close to the body. The reason for the rash spreading with the bigger diaper is that the wetness is spread out more and not so contained. I am surprised that the doctor did *NOT* look into whether she needs Nystatin (an antifungal against the Candida yeast) as someone else mentioned, or some kind of Lamasil/Miconazole (different anti-fungal) lotions.

Actually, with a yeast type diaper rash, the balmex, desiten and other ointments (even A&D and Bodreau's Butt Paste) will only PREVENT healing because they are in effect SEALING the fungus in against the skin. Exposure to air and antifungals will be the ticket *IF* it's a fungal type diaper rash. These are the kind that are typically very red and oozy. Please go to the dr again and ask him (her?) if they think it may be a fungal (yeast) type rash. If not, a baby dermatologist may be in order. Good luck and hope baby feels better soon.

Hi!

My son had NEVER gotten a rash until he was about 13 or 14 months old recently and boy was it awful! He ended up having a little yeast infection on his bottom and we got prescription cream for it. I have never heard a doctor say, "oh get bigger diapers."! If he won't check the baby for a yeast infection (doesn't have to be in her vagina to be a yeast infection) I would get a second opinion. After the Nystatin cleared up his rash we have used Cornstarch that was mentioned in some earlier posts and that has worked beautifully for us. DO NOT USE baby POWDER! There is talc in baby powder and that does nothing for baby's bottom. By the way, we also use Huggies. We have always used them since he was born. Also, too tight diapers can be just as chafing as too big ones. GOOD LUCK!!!

I feel your pain! My 8 month old son gets the worst diaper rash. (He's 20lbs in size three huggies.) I felt foolish doing it, but I finally took him to his Dr. for it and he prescribed a cream that took the rash away in two days! If your doctor won't prescribe something for you (you might want to think about going to another Dr, my pediatrician told me he sees diaper rash cases every day and always prescribes the cream) try Bourdeaux's Butt Paste. It works way better then Balmex. I also use Gold Bond baby powder with Cornstarch and it works wonders, and do not use wipes when he has diaper rash (even if they say they are alcohol free, they still irritate)! I hope this is helpful.

Like the other moms, I have seen kids do great with no diaper, just fresh air, and outdoors is even better. Just keep them on the tile floor or put a dropcloth on the carpet. When I worked in daycare, no matter what diaper rash cream we had on hand, A&D, Desitin, Desenex, or plain Vaseline, it always fixed the problem before the parents came in the afternoon. We really watched the rashy kids to see when they went so we could change them right away, because in daycare you can't just let them play with no diaper, and they healed right up.

Hi, try California Baby Calendula Cream, this stuff is Awesome! It helps not only with diaper rash but any skin condition, cuts, bug bites etc. http://store.babycenter.com/product/safety_baby_care/skin...
It seems expensive but you only need to use a LITTLE bit and it lasts a long time. No need to slather. This stuff is a miracle!

For preventing/treating diaper rash I only use Mustela Baby Vitamin Barrier Cream http://store.babycenter.com/product/safety_baby_care/diap...

or Palmer's Bottom Butter which you can find at Target (usually), sometimes Walgreens, Babies R Us.

Try registering for Babycenter. Not only is it a store but a really valuable resource of information from pregnancy through big kids. There's no cost. Check it out. Babycenter.com

Also, could your baby be allergic to disposable diapers? You may have to try several brands. Try changing her much more frequently until the rash disappears.

yes, she can become allergic to the diapers after a certain time, try pampers regular and see how they do, also, try the aveeno baby diaper rash cream with corn starch, see how this works.

Do you think she could be having a reaction to the diaper?

The little boy I babysit for went through a similar situation with the diaper rash. His Dr. told his Mom that Balmex and Desitin creams can make a severe rash worse and make it burn due to something that they contaie. I use Butt Paste, that is the brand name. It is all natural but can be found anywhere. It is in a yellow tube. It worked great for him. I hoper this helps.

Hi C.! (BTW, I loooooove the name! LOL!) What I use for bad diaper rashes is Lotramin AF... Or, the "non brand name generic stuff", Cloitramazole. I SWEAR by it! Also, I've noticed that some brands of diapers (Huggies, Pampers) seem to have a sort of "baby powder" smell to them... Which, and I may be wrong, leads me to believe that they might contain some baby powder... I know that my son Trey is VERY badly allergic to baby powder (or, at least the perfume that's used in it), and became so when he was around 9-10 months old. It could be that the same perfume or whatever that might be used in the diapers you're using now could be causing a bit of a bad reaction. :)

Are you sure it is a diaper rash and not yeast? I found that Pampers worked the best for babies/children with rashes. If it is red little dots it is yeast and not diaper rash. Try changing here more than you normally would and the health food stores have great diaper rash creams that don't burn when you apply them. Balmex does burn when you have diaper rash and especially after you wipe them with a baby wipe. Try not using baby wipes for a couple of days and use wet gauze pads or a warm wet wash cloth. I would definately make sure it is not yeat though. I went through the whole thing of treating my daughters diaper rash and it kept getting worse and i took her to see a different doctor and her pee pee thights and but where loaded with yeast by them. Not fun. Good luck to you and hope you can clear it up.

It is possible that she all of a sudden became allergic,so buy a small pack of something else and see if it helps. As for diaper cream try Buttpaste (yes thats the name of it) or Dr. Smiths diaper ointment. A little more expensive but both work great. If that doesn't work I suggest you get a perscription for nystatin.

My children are grown now but I found Balmex to be the best. Have you thought about changing diaper brand. Maybe something in the diapers you are using is giving her the rash. I would also give her some "air time" time without a diaper on to get air on her skin. It will take a few days to clear this up. If it doesnt clear up soon Go back to her pediatrician as it could also be yeast and she may need some nystatin cream to clear it up. Hope her little bottom gets better soon.

That happened to my daughter too and a nurse told us to use Lotrimin (anti itch) cream. Let me tell you, it works wonders!! I put it on once and by next diaper change the rash was dramatically improved and gone by next day. Hope this helps.

Put the Balmex on your daughtrer's behind. Do not rubit all the way in. I leave a coat of Bakmex on my daughter's behind when she gets it and within 24 hours she is better.

Have you tried changing the brand of diaper. My daughter could only wear Huggies, I know they are more expensive but if she wore any other kind of diaper she would break out. Also there is a cream called Butt Paste I know the name is aweful but it really works. Plus bath her in oatmeal baths before bed I believe it is Aveeno that puts it out it is in the regular bath isle they are packets it really helps soothe the rash at night. Also just let her run around the house without a diaper they love it and the air really help clear them up quick. Plus make sure when she has the rash that you change the diaper as soon as she is wet. For a price helper on the Huggies I wrote to Huggies the address is on the package and explained to them that my daughter could only wear Huggies and I was a single mom and finances were tight and they sent me all sorts of coupons. Hope this helps

Hi C., I have a 9 month old daughter and I must say I agree w/ the moms that recommended LOTRIMIN AF what is typically used for athletes foot.I have been using it since she was 2 weeks old about 3 times a week. Her pediatrician recommended it at her 2 week checkup due to signs of yeast. So far so good! It's the BEST... Hope this helps.....

Hi C.
My son used to get really bad diaper rashes and I got what Oprah swears by which is called ButtPaste you can get it at wal mart and other places..Also A&D ointment not the cream the brown, yellow and white tube has worked on him as well..Another trick that a dr of his told me when he had really bad diaper rash was to get mylanta or maloxx and swab it on his rash and believe it or not it works and clears it up quickly to..Also using vasaline where its broken out will help prevent irritation as well as powder with corn startch in it..I believe it's pampers that have the sensitive skin diapers you might want to try some of those on her to see if it helps they have no dyes etc in them at all..Luvs also work on sensitve skin pretty well to..I had to start buying Luvs & Pamperswhen my son was in diapers because the cheap diapers were causing him to break out..Hope this helps :)
