How to Get My 11 Month Old on Solids...

Hello! So my 11 month old has no interest in eating solids and I'm not sure what to do. I don't know if this would have anything to do with it or not, but he's never been the sort of baby to put toys or anything else for that matter in his mouth. He currently eats Gerber 3rd foods no problem. We have tried the Gerber puffs, the Gerber wagon wheels and good old-fashioned graham crackers. The first time we gave him the puffs, he actually ate one but gagged on it - he seems to have a bad gag reflex - so maybe he is remembering that first experience every time we try again? Whenever we give him something we take a little bite to show him what to do and then when we offer it to him, he turns his head and raises his hands over his mouth! If we just give it to him and pretend we're not interested, he will attempt to put it to his mouth but once he gets even the smallest taste, he's done. Is it what we're giving him? Any suggestions on other foods to try? We never had this kind of trouble with our first son so I'm just at a loss for what to do. Any ideas on how to get him interested? Your input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi K.

I'm not trying to jump the gun here, but he sounds like he is orally defensive. Does he resist brushing his teeth? You said he doesn't even mouth his toys. I would talk to your doctor about it and maybe see an Occupational therapist. With the gagging, I would think it is more a texture issue than an actual food issue. OT's can really help desensitize and set you up on a program to help you both get through this a little easier.

Good Luck,
C.

Hi K.,

I know food issues with your children can be challenging. These tips might help:

*Try making your own baby food, it has alot more flavor, and it is much easier to transition into family meals when the time comes.

*Never give up, just because he doesn't like it today doen't mean he won't like it next week, taste buds are changing all the time.

Good luck!

Try soft kinds of fruit and cooked veggies in small chunks. I never had that problem, but I would say just keep trying, he'll eat it eventually. :)

All babies are different. My 2 girls i had no problems with giving them things. My youngest is crazy lol he tried and still does to swallow things whole. We had to actually sit there and do the chewing motion to get him to try to gum or chew the food. Its hard work but i would suggest keep tryin. He will get the hang of things. My son loved the big cheese curls. he would suck on them then realized oh i can bite into it. Try something like that.
