Hello Ladies
the other day my friend came over with a really nice brown leather Tommy Hilfiger purse for me I really love the purse even though its used it still looks brand new & I really love her gesture and thoughtfullness but the problem is the purse is sitting in my garage because she is a very heavy smoker and its smells nasty because of it and I dont need my son to be a around that stink plus I used to smoke and now I dont the smell makes me sick to my stomach. Im not sure how to go about getting the smell out so I was just wondering how or if it was possible to get the smell out so I am able to use the purse that she gave me without hurting her feelings if I dont use it at all or she asks why I dont use it.
Please & thank you I would greatly appreciate all your advice on this matter....

I will be taking it to the dry cleaners since they are professionals and have all the right cleaning chemiclas for this type of problem & that way I dont ruin the purse by doing it myself
plus its only going to cost me $15 to get it cleaned and thats cheap.....
Thanks again

I would take it to a cleaners. They can use chemicals that you can't have access to at home and will have more luck removing the smells.
If you mess around with it too much you could end up damaging the leather. A cleaner with experience with leather will know just what to do.

Have you tried either baking soda? or some car dealers in our area use coffee grounds to absorb the odor. You could also try charcoal to absorb the odor.
Good luck

Hi S.! Don't we gals LOVE a new or NEW to us handbag! Here in Maine we have a cleaning company, SERVEPRO. My mother worked for them a few years. The company specialized in quite a few cleaning processes. However, more specific to your needs they remove smoke damage/odors from burned homes. They have pellets that you can purchase that we have used many times for the removal of skunk, mildew, smoke, etc. http://www.servpro.com/ Don't remember what they cost but you may want to check it out depending on what the bag is worth to you! Hope this was helpful :o)

Hello, I have had excellent results using a product called "S.O.S" (Smoke, Odor, Stain eliminator)It's made from naturally-fermented enzymes, water and organic stabilizers so it's earth-friendly and safe to use. I find that it removes odors on contact rather than being just a cover-up deodorizer. You can find this product at www.marketamerica.com/beckyzinn. Simply type in "SOS" in the blank search bar, click on "go" and it will take you right to the product. You can learn more about it and watch a demo to better understand how it works. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

I would try wiping it down with baking soda and water. then put it in an airtight container with activated charcoal inside and in the bottom of the container (find it at a pet store). If all else fails I would throw it in the washer. It may come out just fine. Use gentle cycle and just a little detergent. You can't use it the way it is.

S.,

I am sorry but it will always be that smell of smoke on the purse. I have had the same problem with a bedroom set that was given to me. I never brought it in the house and sold it to someone who smoked so they didnt care. Its an awful smell that just stays no matter what you do. Maybe someone does have a an idea, I have never found one that worked. Maybe you can clean as best as you can and just use it when out with her, then store it back in the garage so her feelings are not hurt. Good Luck!

Try putting in a charcoal briquette and see if that absorbs the odor at all. You could also soak a cloth in some cologne and let it sit for several days.

Good luck!

Is the smell on the inside or the outside? There are these things smell eliminator things that come in a little plastic container and they use charcoal to filter the smell and they smell great. Not strong at all and work wonders. I think you can get them at home depot or lowes. You can try putting the open container in the purse and leave it there for a week or so. It should eliminate most of the odor. Also, you can ask your drycleaner if they have a process to clean the inside/outside of a purse. You could also take the liner out and have a tailor or shoe/purse person put a new liner in.
