Why I have a standard builder grade stainless steel sink in my $200k home is beyond me but I guess that is what you get for the money. I can clean the gunk, etc. out of it but it never seems to shine. Is there any way to get it to at least look like the ones at Home Depot. I know it will always be builder grade and once my basment is done I will probably change it but right now I would just like it to be cleaner well look cleaner.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the comments. I tried the bleach thing but it didn't seem to work. I am going to continue to try the other ideas but especially the bar keeper's friend. I will see what works. Thank you for all the options.

i clean homes almost everyday and most of my clients have stainless steel sinks. I have a lot of them that want soft scrub used and after rinsing and drying I use stainless steel cleaner. Usually bought at home depot. Soft scrub is an excellant product and cleans almost anything. Good luck

Hi V.,

The Fly Lady has an obsession with clean sinks. I tried joining her club but had to quit since I hated getting dozens of emails a day. But her sink cleaning tips are useful:

fill it with hot water to the top and add about a cup of bleach and let it soak for about an hr then drain it and scrub it and rinse it and it should be good.

We recently bought a house and planned on remodeling it. When I complained about the state of our sink, my father brought me Barkeeper's Friend, which is available at dollar stores or Wal-Mart, I believe. It's non-abrasive and completely shined up our sink to the point that we kept it rather than replacing it. You might want to try it, but there is a fair amount of elbow grease involved in getting the sink in great shape the first time around. Good luck!

Ok V., bleach is by far the worst thing you can have in your house for the sake of you and your kids. It is very harmful to the skin and to the respiratory system.

I use ZUD or barkeepers stainless steel cleaner. It is non abrasive and will clean that dark stain out of your stainless steel sink. I use it on my porcelein sink to get silverware stains out.

I hope this helps.

Greetings,

I have one of those sinks as well. This may not be in the manual, but I wet the sink down and sprinkle Comet all over it. I usually do this before bed so it sits overnight. The next morning I use my dishcloth saturated with water to wipe it off. It gets off the rust stains my cast iron skillets leave in the sink.

It's also a great way to deodorize the drain. If you are afraid to use the Comet baking soda may be an option. I use baking soda to clean my solid surface counters.

Have a great weekend and I hope you get the sink clean!

Hi V.. I have a stainless steel sink as well and I clean my with SoftScrub and a scrub brush. It comes out gleaming and shiny. SoftScrub works awesome in my bathtub too. Just don't get the generic kind--I tried the store brand "softscrub" once and it did not work nearly as well as the real stuff. Good luck!

Try spraying it with water, then sprinkling baking soda on it. Let it sit for a few minutes, then use the sponge to lightly scrub/wipe it clean. It worked on our old stainless steal sink, and it works on our white sink now.

Hope it helps!

Ever watch "How Clean Is Your House?" on lifetime? There was one episode where they showed some guys how to clean a stainless steel sink. Kim uses warm soapy water with a capful of bleach; Aggie uses shaving cream to clean the sink and then uses newspaper to make it shine. The two ways are on this page:

I love that show!!
Good luck! B.

I have found a wonderful line of products (actually 5 lines made by the same manufacturer) that do wonders for things like the sink...and many multiple uses. They are also nontoxic so if your kids, even your 2 year old wants to help, it is perfectly safe. The products are not part of a MLM or anything like that but it is an invitation only membership club. They do that because without the distributor and advertisers, they can keep there costs lower than Wal-Mart and the "dollar" stores. Email me at ____@____.com if you are interested in finding out more. I would be happy to personally invite you in. I started saving money immediately and felt really secure about not having dangerous chemicals in the home with small children around. (Side note...my daughter's ADHD was UN-diagnosed when I started using them and got the bleach and other toxins out of the home!)

Hope I can help...

Hi V.,
The only way I have found to make a stainless steel sink is to use windex. I will clean mine with a disinfectant and then use the windex to make it look better. In order for it to really shine, though, you have to wipe off the water spots from your sink every time you use it.
Hope this helps!

I have the same type of sink. It is hard to get it to shine. What I do is fill the sink with bleach water and let it sit for about 5 min. Drain the water and use an all purpose windex and wipe it down. It still isnt perfect but it does bring back some of the shine.

HOT water and a cup of bleach, let it sit for about an hour. Then windex it. Dry it each time you use it and re-windex ever other day or so. Bleach it about once a month.
