My son has a stuffed elephant that he loves. He was teaching the elephant to drink from his sippy cup and spilled milk on the elephant, in several spots. I didn't notice it at first so now the fur is all dried up and stiff. I thought using hot water would help but it didn't. Any thoughts about what to use on it? The tag with the recommended washing instructions got cut off and tossed out.
I really don't want to put it in the washer or dryer. I thought it is so nice out that I could wash it and put it outside to dry.

I put the elephant into a pillow case and threw him in the wash on delicate along with a couple of towels. He came out fine.

I've washed all my daughters' stuffed animals in the washer and also dried in the dryer (hang drying works, too) in a pillowcase, as mentioned by another M. below. I do it on the gentle cycle in warm water and they turn out exactly like they went in, but clean! I also agree that having 2 is a really good idea. We have 2 of 3 of my oldest daughter's favorites because we had serious trauma when they'd need to get washed or, in one case, the dog ate one of them... always good to have a spare for whatever comes about if it is a favorite!
To clean a stuffed animal toy, rub a little cornstarch onto the toy, wiat about 5 minutes, and then brush it clean. Or place the stuffed animal (or a few small ones) into a bag. Sprinkle cornstartch into the bag, close it tightly, and shake. Now brush the pretend pets clean.

You can put the stuffed animal in a pillow case and put it in the washer and dryer. My son has an Elmo that he sleeps with and abotu once a month I throw Elmo in with the sheets and towels when I wash them.
Elmo is still in great condition and never any issues with the dryer. We've had the Elmo since he was about 1, and my son is almost 4, so its not like we just got him.

maybe a bit of soap and water with a finger nail brush. That might help make it nice and soft again where the spot milk was spilled on.
in pillow case in washer.
don't put in dryer if he has the soft feather like hairs on the top of his head, it will be nastey if you do...
I wash my son's stuffed animals in the washer too. We have a front-loader so it's more gentle. I let them air dry. I second the idea of having 2 elephants for your son. We have two "loveys" for our son and have made them interchangeable - it's great. If we can't find one we just hand him the other. Sometimes he sleeps with both, but he really doesn't care as long as he has one of them.
Well, my children are much older now and I guess you learn...if your child LOVES a stuff animal...buy more then one...and if he grows apart you can always have it on hand as a gift! After seeing many shows that talk about stuffed animal and the germs they collect...I would throw it in the pillow case and wash it!
Beth's advice works well. My son has a stuffed animal that was getting pretty dirty. I tied it in a pillow case and washed and dried it. It came out looking brand new, Seriously! It has kindof long hair and I was afraid it would come out matted, but it looked perfect.
