Help! My daughter fell asleep on my bed (no waterproof mattress cover) and had an accident. How to I clean the mattress out? I tried to blot with a shamwow but it didn't seem to do anything. I my mattress going to smell like pee? Thanks, moms!!
This is what I've always done to clean mattresses:
Blot up as much liquid as possible.
Dampen the area with febreeze.
Then sprinkle large ammounts of Borax all over the wetness and then let it air dry.
Once dry, vacuum it all up and the stain and smell are gone.
Nature's miracle. It's for animals so you get it from the pet store. Nothing gets rids of the stains and odors better than it. I use it full strength. It's safe. Good Luck!
Another vote for Nature's Miracle. The one for cats is stronger than the one for dogs because cat pee smells so much stronger.
Do you have a carpet shampooer/steamer (ex: Bissell ProHeat or SpotBot) with an attachment for smaller jobs? If so, that should do the trick. Otherwise, maybe try pouring baking soda on it, let it soak up the wet spot, then vacuum.
My son peed in his bed and I sprayed it very generously with Febreeze and let it air out, it was ok after that. I was able to flip his after it was dry which was good, but I know that is not always possible on grown people beds, but if possible, then flip it as well. Good luck!!
I vote for the Nature's Miracle. It isn't just for what *pets* do. I have been known to let it soak in the mattress and let it air dry for a few hours. Works well.
An enzymatic cleaner (like Kids'n'Pets, NaturesMiracle, etc). The enzymes eat the biological contaminates -uric acids, ammoniums, fecal matter, vomit- and break them down to their base components. You have to actually saturate the area, so your bed will be wet for a couple days in an area about 3x the size if the original, but the it will be totally cleaned.
I've successfully cleaned a mattress using spray upholstery shampoo and then drying it with a hair dryer. I've also set a heater with a fan on the bed far enough away from the spot that the heat hits the spot. You have to be careful when using a heater. If it doesn't automatically turn off when tipped over, I'd not use it.
BTW, I bought a terry fabric mattress protector when I bought my mattress. It's coated with something that makes it water proof. AND it is soft, doesn't crinkle or make for sweaty sleeping. It was $60 but so worth it in comfort and protection.
I would dry up as much as you can, then spray the mattress with febreeze. Pat it dry again then let it air dry. When I did this the stain was gone and the mattress didn't have an odor.
