How Old Is to Old for a Used Crib

I sold a convertable crib on craigslist for $100. It was 5 years old at the time & in excellent shape. Look online-craislist.org, ebay, classified ads-to see local going prices.
I think they're referring to older ones like from the 70s or earlier-lead paint & all.

I think the main concern with age of the crib is the distance between slats and to make sure that the crib is not painted with lead based paint(pre 1970).

From what i remember it is 6 years. But you can call the 800 # to see if it ever was recalled. And they will tell you how safe it is or not. If you think that it is too old to sell , you couild donate it to birthline. It is a place where women can rely on for things that are neede reguardless of new or not. ###-###-####. Hours are 10-1

I believe the only test is to put a soda can between the slats. If it fits, it isn't safe. Plus all the other common sense things, like a mattress that fits. My niece used the crib that my sister and I used, and it is from the 70's. Safe is safe.

I thought the only issue with really old cribs was lead-based paint. Not sure when they stopped using that, but I thought is was decades ago. Perhaps check online. I guess if it is plastic (instead of say wood), it could potentially crack and wear out after a half dozen years or so, but wood should last ages.

Hi A. - there isnt an age limit on cribs because they are furniture. The 6-yr rule is for car seats. If your crib was new or near new 5 yrs ago, someone will be able to get years of enjoyment from it.

The crib we used for both of our boys belonged to my sister who used it for her son born in 1996. As long as it is sturdy, does not have the possibility of lead based paint (paint prior to 1977) and the slats are 2 3/8' apart as one other post suggested, it should be a great crib.

You also want to be cautious that it does not have any finials on the corners or posts on the corners that could catch clothes or toys and be a strangulation hazard.

It would also probably be a good idea to check for recalls on your crib before you sell it.

There's an age limit for car seats but not cribs. The safety piece you need to pay attention to is that the space between the slats are 2 3/8" or smaller, or roughly the size of the bottom of an aluminum can. If a can fits through, the slats are too far apart and the crib should be destroyed.

The new stadard went into effect in '91.

First check it it has been recalled then do the soda can test and last if it has been painted then think twice, but if it still has it's original finish I don't see a problem with it at all. I used a crib that had been passed down through our family and it was perfectly fine, not to mention budget friendly.

I think as long as the crib is in good condition and it doesn't contain lead paint you're in the clear. I think they recommend the age limit is for lead based paints and chipping peices and such- just check for those before you sell :)
