How Often Do You Mop Your Kitchen Floor?

Updated on April 18, 2011

I need some level headed opinions here! Hubby and I are "disagreeing" (playfully) about how often one should mop/clean the kitchen floor. I just walked in there and STUCK to the floor in one spot! lol

We (I) mop ours (embarrassingly) once every two weeks (with a quick job with the broom or dust buster about every three days). I will run the swiffer over the floor more often if I am having company over or if the floor just gets to me. I just simply don't have time for more! Hubby thinks it should be done about once a year. He is serious

How often do you mop/clean your kitchen floor? BE HONEST!!

What can I do next?

Sigh, I vacuum about once a day, the kitchen family room and hallway Everyday and then I have a schedule for rest of the rooms. I feel SO guilty because I don't mop often at all. I'm too embarrassed (let alone remember when ;-) to say. In my defense, when out tile was put in the grout wasn't sealed (even though I asked if it should be). So even though the tile was nice, the workmanship of putting it in was great it, in my mind it looks like (you know what) now because of the grout. IF I had known it needed it right away I would have sealed it myself but was told not to worry about it by the installer. I've tried cleaning and sealing myself but the staining was too much and already set. What really needs to happen is the grout needs to be redone but around here that is a lot of dollars or a tremendous amount of work. So I live with it. In order to do that I can't stand looking at as long as it takes to mop so have be in the right frame of mind to do so. Wow, who knew this could be such an emotinally charged question?!? Aren't you glad you asked me? ;-).

Honestly, not as often as I should! Maybe once every few months. I vacuum it regularly but we do have a dog whom I've nicknamed "Hoover." She pretty much keeps all food and crumbs off the floor.
I do "spot clean" all the time. I see a spot and clean it with a rag and then also clean whatever is in my reach while I'm down there.

We have to be honest?

Okay, well, anyone who walked in my house at any time would think it was clean. However, I'm not one for floor mopping, I have to admit. I have dark wood floors, in crappy shape, and they don't look any different if they're just mopped or not. So, I don't mop much. I do have a lot of rugs, and I vacuum them frequently.

Do I really have to be honest? Four times a year? We're a shoes off family, if that helps. Yikes, I hate being honest, it sounds so dirty. My house really does look clean, I swear, and is clean, in the important areas. And well-decorated. But why spend a lot of time mopping when it doesn't make a darn bit of difference.

About once a year. Really. Maybe not that often. It's wood, I vaccuum once a week. When my foot sticks to a spot, I get out a wet rag and wipe that spot and leave the rest. It's a "character" grade wood floor with lots of knots and dark spots so what I can't see, I can ignore!

I vacuum when the dust bunnies are as big as the dogs, so about every 2-3 days. I wet swiffer once a week if the weather has been gross and we're tracking all kinds of wet and mud through the house, or once every two weeks if the weather's been good. And I bust out an actual mop and bucket probably once every two months. Once every 6-8 months the floor gets a serious on my hands and knees with the scrubbrush scrubbing.

I used to vacuum and mop once a week when I was a stay at home mom. Now I'm lucky if I mop/vacuum twice a month. I spot clean but I miss the days my house felt cleaner. I work part time and when I come home I start dinner and laundry. I need to get back on track and mop at least 4 times a month and vacuum more. My kids like to use the swiffer wet jet and dry so that too counts as spot cleaning.

Seriously it should be mopped once a week. I usually mop mine once a month. I do wet swiffer it a time or two inbetween but it really doesnt do what a good ol' string mop does. I love walking barefoot on the clean kitchen floor, your feet definitely let you know when its time to mop again. If the bottom of your paws are black you have a problem :)

Once a week now that I have my new Eureka envirosteamer. :))

Before that... ehhh... every few months, maybe. But I do sweep a few times a day (depending on the day... we have a dog and fluff balls accumulate in the corners easily, plus the grass clippings that come in on shoes, etc) and I spot clean with a hot damp paper towel for spills or anything that I step on that my foot sticks to, lol. Which is hard to tell sometimes... b/c the dog drips water from her bowl all the way across the kitchen!!! And that always feels "sticky" until the drips dry.
Sponge mops didn't work, they just tore up and had to constantly be replaced b/c of the edges of the tiles. Regular mops just seemed like it slopped the mess around and I couldn't really SCRUB. The only way it felt clean was hands and knees... and it is a BIG kitchen with a 5 ft island in the middle and I would just put it off and put it off and put it off...
Now, with my steamer... it takes about 10 minutes... start to finish. And it is SANITIZED TOO. :))
Best thing I ever bought!~

We have lived in our house for 3 1/2 years, and I will honestly say that I have mopped it about 5 times. It is quite literally about 8 feet by 5 feet. I just sweep, unless I spill something, and then I clean that area I spilled on. I did, however, make my husband clean the floor on his hands and knees right before the baby was born. :)

Daily, if I'm home (aka if I have somewhere to be first thing, I skip that day, but the days I have somewhere to be NO ONE is home).

Boys & Dogs & Homeschooling (meaning we're home a lot more than most people) & Cooking Adventures & it's our main entry into the house.

I do a short list of things in the morning before I take a shower.
- pee & brush my teeth
- Caffeine & Computer & wake up
- Dustmop the downstairs
- Wash the kitchen floor & sometimes the living room floor
- Start a load of laundry
- Cook Brunch
- Clean the counters & the dining room table
Take A Shower

My mum washes her kitchen floor for major holidays. I've found as an adult I EITHER do things just like she did or the polar opposite. The floors are one of the opposite things.

So are toilets. The toilet gets cleaned daily. Again. Boys.

I "plan" to do it weekly and before getting pregs I was doing great at it. Now once every two or sometimes three(eek!!) weeks. I sweep all the time and spot check it as well. I really think once a week is good and more than that is even better! I am so getting a steam mop soon, I love the idea of a disinfected floor with no chemicals. I think once a year may have happened here in the past!!!! But I think that is not a good thing!!

If you want it done every other week, there's nothing wrong with that. But don't feel guilty if you don't get to it more often. And don't expect hubby to do it as often as you want it done :)

Once a year? We have a no shoes in the house policy and you would not believe how dirty the floors get even with us taking our shoes off. Do you walk around your house in shoes? If so, I'd say wash the floor every day! I like washing my floors once a week. But I'm 36 1/2 weeks pregnant now and washing the floor is really h*** o* me so it's been a while since I last washed the floors. Just today my hubby surprised me while I was out grocery shopping and I came home to clean floors! He and our three children scrubbed the floors and rinsed them clean. What a wonderful surprise to come home to.

Wood floors - dust mop every 2 days. "mop" once a week, but honestly, when I had a white floor and could see how dirty floors get, it should be done avery other day.....just because you can't see (or feel) it, doesn't mean it's clean.

However......I have found that if I sweep then use a spray bottle instead of a bucket, it comes very clean and it is so easy. Try the spray bottle with one of those "mops" that has a removable and washable cover...remember to wash the cover regularly though. A clean kitchen floor is a joy and it only takes about 8 minutes, if that.

I do a quick sweep of the floor every day after doing the dinner dishes. It's such a habit I don't even think about it anymore.

I do a good sweeping and mopping once a week (usually on friday) with the bucket, soap and water. But during the week if something gets spilled or it just needs refreshing I have no problem dragging out the mop and "damp mopping" it. Usually all I do is sprinkle a little water on the floor and mop it up with a damp mop.

I don't have small children playing on the floor anymore but I do have pets that leave footprints, pet food and hair all over the place.

LOL - I've always wondered this!

Honestly, monthly. But the joke in our house is that with how many spills and dropped foods there are I end up washing almost the entire kitchen floor through the course of a week.

I sweep or vac it almost daily, including climbing under the table and moving all the chairs. I am quite neurotic about wiping down the floor/washing it after food drops or there are spills tho. I guess that's my reasoning for not washing it entirely more often.

For the most part we remove shoes upon entering the house, so I'm not THAT worried about "germs" on the floor.
