We are invited to a First Communion celebration and I'm unsure of what the typical amount of a cash gift is now-a-days. Thanks in advance for your input!
I think it mostly depends on what you can comfortably give and how close you are to the child. Usually close relations give at lest 25.00 but can be more generous especially if you know it's going into a college fund. Friend of the family would be fine with 5 or 10 dollars. Just a thoughtful card is even enough if you are strapped for cash.
The savings bond is a good idea.
We are coin collectors and we deal with a local numismatics company. We keep a roll of Silver coins to use as special gifts. The are Morgan Silver dollars and the ones I have right now are work about $25 each. Very pretty shiny, brand new in a little case.
We've also given proof sets for a special year such as birthday, etc.
Depending on your relationship with the family is how much $$ I'd spend. We usually spend about $25 for friends.
I would do a $25 or $50 savings bond...depending how close you are with the family. which ever you decide it will double in value as it matures :-)
we always give savings bonds. you pay $25 and when they mature they are worth $50 (there are many denominations you can get anywhere form low to thousands.
I usually give $20 gift cards to kids. Not too much not too little, and they are thrilled at the fact that they get to choose their gift. Most stores I have found now-a-days carry the pre-priced gift cards to select stores (ie $15 ColdStone Creamery, $25 Red Lobster)... just examples not suggestions haha. Like previously mentioned, it depends on how close you are to the family. Whatever gift you provide will be greatly appreciated... everybody is pretty understanding to these tough economic times.
