My daughter is 16 months and we just recently (maybe a month ago took one bottle away) Now she gets one when she gets up, one when she goes down for her afternoon nap and one just before bed and all are about 5-6 oz. So in a day she gets about 15 -18 oz. I think in a few months we will probably start weaning her off the mid afternoon bottle but for the other two (morning and night) I plan to keep them around for a while at least until I can discuss with her that she will no longer be getting them and why. I think its a comfort thing and it certainly isnt doing her harm so I say why not.
Good Luck

My son is 14 months. I took the bottle away 1 week after his 1st birthday. He drinks from a sippy cup w/ straw. I give him 6 oz of milk in the morning and the same in the evening. For snack and lunch, I give 2 oz of juice which I diluate with 4 oz of water.

I kept my son on formula until about 18mo.

1 year was when we introduced solids, so the formula consumption went down some. Here's the flow chart for him

Breastmilk apx 20oz (no typo) every 2 hours from a few weeks to 9mo >>>
Formula apx 64oz per day from 9mo to ??? >>>
Formula apx 32oz per day + apx 32oz of whole milk to 18mo>>>
1/2 Gallon of whole milk per day from 18mo to present (8yo).

As you can see his consumption has gone down a great deal as his growth has also slowed down. He was a FAST grower. Technically the *amounts* are the same... but he was over 3' tall at age 2, and is only 5' tall at age 8. 3' in 2 years, versus 2 feet in 6 years. The percentages are quite different.

My daughter was still having solid meals and breastmilk at this age. She didn't start drinking milk from cows until about 4 y/o and I greatly limit her consumption. We eat plenty of cheeses and yogurts (organic of course) tho.

I don't remember how much my daughter drank at that age, but there is no rule about when they should stop drinking from a bottle. My daughter had one or two bottles a day until she turned 3, then she agreed that they could go away. This way, I was sure she was getting enough milk.

I have a 15 mo and he is still nursing three times a day. I also give him one sippy cup of milk, roughly 4oz, a day. Then I also keep a sippy of water around at all times. He's never had juice. . .

My doctor told me when my daughter was around this age that about 20-24 oz of milk a day is good enough. Anymore than that can lead to a higher risk of anemia. Also I don't think your son really needs juice at this age - milk or water should be fine, or at least water his juice down if he'll still drink it like that.

Kids his age need 24oz of milk. 3 8oz cups a day, or 4 6oz cups a day. Don't give juice or water until he meets his milk minimum.

At 13mos he should be eating regular meals of breakfast, lunch and dinner with milk at each meal, and a morning and afternoon snack with juice or juice/water mix. But they do not get juice/water until the drink their milk from the previous meal. Getting in calcium is most important.

I'm very surprised your doctor said you didn't have to take the bottle away. A bottle is a tool, a tool for a child who cannot drink on their own. Once they can hold and tilt the bottle to drink then they don't need a bottle anymore. They're just using it out of habit and the sucking feeling. That doesn't teach them anything. Transitioning to a sippy cup is no better. Those are meant for travel only to not make a mess but too many parents have gotten lazy and use sippy cups so their kids will suck on those as well. The sippy cup companies feed on this and have convinced the public that sippy cups are a daily necessity, lol! Get your son a transition cup without an inner valve. These days there's not much to offer thanks to the sippy cup companies so try the disposable sippy cups where the drink drains out. This will teach them to swallow and not suck (make the holes larger if necessary) and then start teaching to use an open cup at home. All meals AND snacks should be eaten/drank at the table or high school. No roaming around with a sippy cup, period. Early good habits are great!

I think it really just depends on the mom. My daughter from about 18 months until she was about 26 months had 2 6oz bottles of milk a day. One at nap time and one at night and then she would have milk in her cereal in the morning. During the day she had a sippy cup and would have watered down juice or milk or water. But I do think the recommended amount of milk is 20 oz a day. I think as long as he is getting milk at his meals and when you put him down for a nap and at night that should be more then enough. ONce I took my daughter off the bottle she only got milk during her meals. now she asks for it ramdomly during the day. and she is almost 3
