How Much Do Your 14 Month Old's Weigh???

I just want to see a bunch of varied answers to this! My son weighed 7lbs even at birth, and currently weighs 20.5#. He was on the 25%-10% percentile curve the whole time. I just wonder if others have lower weight, picky eaters??? I would love to see a variation - to know I'm NOT alone!!! He eats 5-6 small meals a day, and gets plenty of calories, he's just not a chubster. The doc says he's fine, unless he falls under the 3rd percentile - and that he's maintained the same weight curve, that makes it average for HIM. thanks for all input!

My little girl HAS ALWAYS BEEN under weight. At 18 months she wasn't even 20 lbs. NOW she will be 7 in 2 months and she is only 41 lbs. She is very healthy and NEVER sick. So I would just say if he is healthy, I would worry.

My son is 16 months old and weighs 23 and a half pounds. He has always been on the lower end of the percentiles for weight, but he has consistently been in the 90th percentiles for his height. My son eats very good, three meals and snacks throughout the day. I actually was worried about his weight at one point because he was so skinny and when I asked the doctor they told me basically the same thing they told you. I agree with you some babies just aren't chubby.

He's fine! I wouldn't worry until the doctor worries.

My daughter is 5 years old and only weighs 30lbs. But because that weight is normal for her and she is proportional to her height the doctors don't worry about it.

My situation is exactly opposite of yours...I have a 6-month old who is absolutely huge (about 23-24 lbs). She is so big that her height/weight aren't even on the chart. Like your baby, she doesn't eat any more or less than most babies. I was concerned at first, but the doctor assured me that as long as babies are otherwise healthy, being very large (or small, in your case) is perfectly normal. So no worries- babies just come in all shapes and sizes!

HI. My name is A. I have a 10 month old son named Tyler. I also am curious about this subject. Tyler was 9 lbs even at birth and now at 10 monts he weighs about 23 lbs and very short. He's always been a chunky baby. He is healthy and my doctor hasn't told me he is to big. But I hear from alot of moms that have kids 14 months+ that are Tyler's size. I guess diffrent baby need different things. To me he doesn't look fat he is very solid. I think your baby sounds to be a good weight compaired to other moms I have talked to but I'm not a doctor lol. Anyways let me know what you think.

Hi Sarah, you are not alone. My son is 21 months old and he only weighs 23 pounds. He too was on the lower side of the curve for his weight but in the 90th percentile for height. Dr. says there's nothing to worry about.
I also have a daughter who just turned 4 in February. She only weighs 32 pounds, but is going through an amazing spurt as far as her height. So when all is said and done I just have small children.

Don't worry about it, especially if your ped isn't worried. Two out of three of my kids are skinny, under the growth chart kids, while the third turned out to be a little pudge! One of my skinny kids is actually not making growth hormone and is on shots for that, but we're talking negative percentiles and being 20 lbs now at FOUR years old! My five year old is not quite 30 lbs. My chubby one is almost two and about 24 pounds, which really isn't that chubby, just in comparison to the other two. So yeah, there are a ton of scrawny little babies out there, and you shouldn't worry. Just enjoy and appreciate his uniqueness! :D

Oh no worries, at birth Aryan was 6lbs 3ozs took him MONTHS to get to doubling his b irth weight. He's ONLY 24lbs now and at 2 y ears old. He's on the 10% curve scale and doc isn't worried b/c he's staying consistant. Hes not ENTIRELy active either, but he's picky and his genetics has a lot to do with it. He's part Eastern Indian and those kids are Small anyway :)

Only worry if he's not eating what he SHOULD in a week. that's the advice I got from my Ped.

My son is 15 months, but when he was 13 months he weighed 20.5. He weighed 7.6 when he was born. He has always been in the 10-25th percentile as far as weight goes. Did you breastfeed? My son is a really good eater, but he is also really tall. He's in the 75th percentile for height. We're getting ready for our 15 month check up...I'm always curious to see how much he is going to weigh.

Sarah,
Props to you for staying home with the baby! I stay home with our twins (14 mos old) and have no regrets either. I thank the Lord that He provides us a way so I can do this. Anyhow, on your post-my 14 mo old twins are chubsters. At their 12 mo well check up they were 24 & 27 lbs. They are in the high percentile. But obviously your baby is a slimmer baby & if you feed him when he's hungry (and I know you do) - then I'd say you are doing right & he's ok. If he is hungry you will know. As long as he is getting the proper nutrition, then just trust your motherly instinct to know if there is an underlying problem. You have brought this up to his ped. & he thinks it is ok. Good luck & enjoy that sweet baby & trust yourself to know him better than anyone :-) V.

When Braxton was born he was almost 9 lbs. Chubby little man. He gained weight really good until he got to around 18 lbs. He eats really well, but he is so active that he just burns it off. He just turned 2 in Feb. and as of yesterday he is up to 23 lbs. He is really healthy. His dr was concerned that he may be anemic, but his blood test came back normal. The way I see it, as long as he eats good and stays healthy, I don't worry to much about his weight. His cousin only weighed 5 lbs at birth, he is 15 months old and weighs 26 lbs!

If your child is happy and healthy, eating nutritious food, and progressing physically and mentally, then he's great and you shouldn't worry. Despite being great eaters, both of my girls have always been in the 25% or less range for their weight. I don't exactly remember what they weighed at 14 months. My 3 1/2 year old is barely 30 lbs and is going to be in her giant Britax carseat until she's 10 at the rate she's going. But both of my girls are bright and happy and healthy so I don't worry about their weight. The only problem with a kid who doesn't weigh in at least at the 50% range is finding them clothes that fit (if they fit in the waist, they are too short; if they are long enough, they can't hold them up.) Keep in mind that the growth charts most doctors use a growth chart that was developed by Met Life in 1959 and hasn't been revised since and is based on formula-fed babies, which tend to weigh more than breast-fed babies so it's not the most scientifically reliable source of whether your child is healthy or not.

They come in all shapes and sizes. My son was a little chubb but I can't get any baby fat on my girl no matter what I do. She's just going to be long and lean. I joke that she's going to grow up to be a supermodel and support us when we're old! As long as he's staying on his curve, don't even worry about it! Maybe he'll just be a baseball player instead of football. :)

My 14-month old weighs just barely over 20lbs. He was 5lbs 10oz at birth. He can eat, just stays slim. He's very active, too. The doctor's not worried since he's stayed on the weight curve, like your baby has. With my little boy staying little, we've gotten a lot of good use out of his clothes! :o)

I had the same situation with my now almost 3 year old. At birth, he was 6lbs 10oz and every time we went to the doctor I was so excited to see how much he'd gained, but everytime, though he gained weight he was still at the 15-25% and I'd be so sad. My doctor just kept telling me that he just wouldn't be the biggest guy in the class and that as long as he was maintaining the same percentile, he was absolutely fine! Look at it this way--his chances of struggling with obesity in the coming years are less than his peers who are currently overweight! Just keep feeding him what he likes (my son has about 6 different meals on his "menu" and that's all he wants, but they hit all the food groups so I let him have them!)My 2 1/2 year old is still on the lower percentile but the doctor says he wouldn't change a thing, he's still growing right on schedule. Good luck!

If the doctor is not worried, then Im sure he is fine.

My son is short for his age but his weight fits his height..well at first. Now he is a bean pole and skinny as anything which makes buying clothes a task. He will be 5 end of July and is just now getting out of 18-24month old shorts..pants too but the pants obviously show off his socks..so either he has on a belt and the pants fit length wise or it is the other way around. LoL.

I was like that as a child too. I ate, so no one worried too much.

I know you have a lot of responses...but I figure a little more reassurance can't hurt. I have four children. My oldest was always average and at the top of the charts 75th to 95th percentile for height and weight. Then along came daughter #2. She is now 8 1/2 years old. She has finally hit 50 lbs. She is just now getting too tall for her size 6 pants. A must for her is the new pants with adjustable waist. They are so wonderful!!! My 4 1/2 year old daughter is only 34 lbs. and also a teeny tiny thing. My son turned 2 in Jan. He was the biggest at birth (7 lb. 12 oz.) and still only weighs 25 pounds. My two younger girls were in a rear facing car seat until they were 15 months old when they finally hit exactly 20 pounds. When my 8 yr. old was 12 months old one doctor wanted to do bloodwork to see if she was okay because she was growing so slowly. I got a second opinion. And a third. The others all agreed she was fine and no bloodwork was needed. She was growing at the same (slow!) rate and her height and weight went perfectly together. And like someone else mentioned....get used to the car seat/booster seat! I don't think my kids will EVER get out of them!! :)

I have 5 children and they have all varied. We do have a set of BB twins and while one twin is in the 70-80% the other was hardly ever on the chart at all. They will be 4 in April and the smaller twin only weighs 26 pds, at birth he was 5pds 11oz. As long as your child is making his own curve then he should be fine! Our oldest son was almost over the top of the charts as a baby but at the age of 12 is healthy and actually skinnier than boys at his school so you never can tell what will happen, as long as they eat healthy is what matters! Just continue to teach your child healthy eating habits and all will be fine!

My youngest was 7 lb 12 oz at birth- that's above-average. By 8 months, she was no longer registering on the curve at all. At her 12 month check-up she weighed 16 lbs, and at her 2 year check-up she weighed 20.5 lbs. Her appetite seems normal, especially compared to her sister. I've brought it up at every single check-up, and every sick-visit, but her doctor says she is fine. She is on a curve, he says, her very own extremely small curve. The only thing he changed was to recommend giving her a whole vitamin every day (as opposed to half).

I would keep bringing it up- make sure your pediatrician is fully aware of everything, then listen to your "gut".

Her daddy is 25, 5 ft. 7 or 8 inches tall and is only about 130lbs. and his sister was only 12lbs at 1 year old so it is genetic and I have told her doctor all of that. She is very active and pretty tall but she is a picky eater. Trust me, I worry about her not eating or gaining weight too but she is a very healthy little girl. Try not to worry about it, although I know that it is hard, but he will be alright.

Sarah,

My daughter went below the percentile chart at one year and never made the chart again. Her doctor stated that as long as her weight, height and head circumference were in sync than we were not to worry. He also reminded me that no child will starve to death as long as a varied diet was provided.

My little daughter is now 26 years old. Although her hieght topped out at 5', she is perfect. She was also my healthiest child.

Charts and averages are just that. There is always someone above it and someone below.

Like somone else said - averages are just that. As long as he is eating, I would not be too worried about it unless he stops growing.
