How Much $ Do You Spend on Christmas?

Just curious! I think I spent about $400 on gifts for 2 kids, hubby and I do $25 limit for eachother, probably $100 on household (tree, wreath and few things) plus we are hosting Christmas Eve which will be another at least $300 (our families supply wine and some of the food.) Seems like a lot to me!?!

What can I do next?

My hubby is a saver and saved a little over 2K in his Christmas club fund. We've spent every dime of that. That includes charitable giving (adopting a single mom & her 2 girls, toys for tots, stockings for soldiers and a memorial fund of a family that had their 2nd grader killed in a car accident about 2 weeks ago).
When times are tough--we scale back, but we LOVE giving!

This year, for everyone including my daughter, I spent roughly $200 on everything. Going through a rough patch, so I couldn't do much. I don't really decorate and I used wrapping paper that I didn't use last year. Hopefully, next year will be better, but who knows?

Not so much that I can't pay off the credit cards completely every month.
I never go into debt over any holiday or birthday.
It really helps to spread out your holiday shopping a bit through the year rather than trying to do it all in one fell blow.

We spend about $500 on daughter and our daughter's bday is 12/27 so we are hit with 2 things because her birthday is her day and I keep that completely separate from Christmas.

I spent about $500 on mom/dad/stepdad/brother's family/bil family including 6 nieces and nephews

Our daughter is turning 16!! We are giving her a savings account we've had since she was born that she does not know about to start her own bank account. This has extra money we've put in over the years which includes gifts of money given to me and her, loose change, and her distribution checks from our company because she is legally an owner as well. She is getting my car and her dream was to go to the BackStreet Boys/New Kids on the Block concert in June and we managed front row floor seats for her and a friend.

I do not spend in such a way that I go into debt. It is all paid for well in advance of any credit card bill.

Stay out of debt.

Our budget is 3,000. We have 4 kids (@500 each) and many family members to buy for. The budget also includes the tree, wrapping paper and all the little extras that come along. We dont spend that much throughout the year. Santa brings them their jackets, hats/gloves, clothes, shoes and also the fun stuff. Their 500 is used very wisely :)

This year is the most I've ever spent, that's because my daughters play muical instructments, one is getting a new clarinet, the other a high quality used flute. Last year the girls each got laptops so that was also an expensive year.

I give many practical items that I would have to buy throughout the year anyway, like bodywash, clothing, flashlights, makeup. Of course, since it's Christmas, I also tend to splurge a little.

daughter $1400
daughter $1000
hubby $50
household gift $30
SIL - $95
SIL - $7 (she never gets anything for us, and we rarely see her)
FIL - $60
BF - $65
Nanny/kids grandmother - $100
coworkers $4 each
my boss $25
hubby's coworker $20
my kids friends $50 (total)
grab bags $30

It changes every year. We budget out what we can afford to spend ahead of time. One year it was as little as $250... this year it was a little over 1k. Ideally I'd spend about 4k.

We probably spent about $400 - $500. I had a lot of coupons and watched the sales like crazy. I only shopped at 4 or 5 stores only. And that is for a family of 3, my mom and dad and my husband's mom, my son's 3 immediate cousins, and a care package to Afghanistan. Plus I was able to do a couple charity children too which I have never done before. Also in that money spent too about $100 of it is going to my son's birthday next month too. I think we did good for what we got everyone. I did a lot of online shopping at JCP - amazing sales on PJ's and coats. Plus the coupons. I love coupons.

We went a little overboard with our daughter's presents this year. My husband is deployed, so he ordered several things online for her & had them shipped home. I would total up how much we spent, but I don't know how much he spent! lol Plus I probably don't want to know the answer :) I'm guessing at least $500.

Hubby has also bought some things from Egypt to send home for me & some of my family. Don't know the cost on that either haha

I spent about $50 on hubby, but I couldn't really do much for him since he's overseas lol I'll have to treat him when he comes home for R&R. His birthday is also Jan 2nd. I think he spent about $100 on me.

For other family members, I think I've spent about $50-$60, though I don't know my portion of my parents' gifts lol We don't exchange much among adult family members. I buy for my 2 siblings & my nephew & my parents. Then we will draw names among the 6 young kids on my dad's side, so there's another $15-20 I'll spend later (we get together after Christmas).

We don't normally spend that much on our daughter, because we haven't been able to in the past. The bulk of the cost was a laptop my hubby got her, and I got her the Leapfrog Leapster Explorer with a few games. Daddy's got her so spoiled! haha

Generally we just spend whatever we can afford at the time, while trying to get our daughter some of the things she asks Santa for.

I have spent $60 on gifts for my baby. SO and I aren't exchanging gifts this year, we decided to have a night out on New Years. On household stuff I spent maybe around $40...at the most.
We are going to his family for dinner, but they have it very early, so we decided to still cook our own. I estimate we will probably spend $80 on that. I'll actually bump that up to $100....after a day with the extended inlaws we'll probably get a bottle of Jack Daniels. =)
So all together $200, although it might go up slightly on misc. last minute things.

we spent about 50 on our daughter's presents, about 300 on family presents (although spread out through out the year, I bought at sales and State Fairs and stuff) probably about 60-70 on Christmas lunch, and maybe 20 on incidentals for wrapping/decorating. I spent about 15 on the hubby, we decided not to do much for each other because we just blew our "fun" money on a new tv when our old one went out.

Our budget is about 450, including baking supplies, gift bags, wrapping paper. That's for the whole family: 4 GPs, 4 nieces/nephews, dh's two sisters and DHs, our own 4 kids and us, as well as homemade food we put into baskets for friends. I actually saved most of the Halloween candy, and that's going into the cookies.

$75 on each son (they each are getting 7 small gifts from Santa) - and we have the money to spend but choose not to go overboard on Christmas presents. My husband and I spend less than $5 on each other for an ornament for the tree. We would rather spend that money elsewhere on a family trip or experience rather than on material items. Plus when kids are young they are thrilled to open presents and have no idea how much things cost - you can make it special without spending much money.

that's about right. depending on the age of your kids you can do a little less mine are 2 &4 and don't really know the difference yet so i did alot of shopping off craigslist and yard sales this summer. I got my 2yr son a diego bike for $15 and a step 2 work bench for $20 with all the tools etc.

we spend about $2k total for all christmas. which includes:
*gifts for my husband and I, 2 kids, 10 family gifts, 6 extended family gifts, 4 friend gifts, 2 teacher gifts. My husband is 1 of 7 so we do kris kringles (and we set a budget - last year it was $50 a person, this year we brought it down to $30) and we only by for our godchild not all nieces and nephews (which would be 8)
*1 case a wine (we buy a case right before thanksgiving - most stores will give a discount even on a mixed case of wine - so that we always have some on hand and easy to throw in a bag for a last minute gift).
*food - we host thanksgiving, but always bring a dish of some sort to about 5 other parties/gatherings.
*about 100 christmas cards and postage
*Tree and 2 wreaths
*babysitting for (2)different shopping trips.

We have always spent at least $400 on our family not including my DS or eachother. (His parents who are divorced, sister, grandpa, aunt, brothers and sisters and all I ever by for is my parents because I am not close to any of my other family) This year my hubby and I decided it was getting out of hand so this year we just bought for my parents and his brothers and sisters.
We also just bought a tv on black friday that was not cheap to say the least but it was my husbands gift.
We spent around $200 on the kids this year, it is our DD first Christmas. We normally spend more but my son was old enough that he wrote a list and sent it to his grandparents and they bought almost everything so we only bought what was left.
We are cooking the dinner this year but since we live far from all the family just two other couples are coming over so it shouldnt be too expensive.
I told my hubby I didnt want anything this year because everything I ever mentioned I wanted throughout the year he already has gotten me so I cant think of anything.

First curb the spending on the household items so you can have the $ for gifts.
Then spend less on the household.
Get a fake tree after Christmas on sale to re-use every year.
Buy a real $10 wreath or get a fake one.
Buy a few decorations on sale after the 25th and don't buy any more next year.
Spend the bulk of your 4 on the dinner and gifts.
The $400 total isn't bad.
If you need to cut back more, tell hubby you don't need to buy each other anything unless you really enjoy it and like/can use what you get each other.
Good having everyone contribute wine and some food.

But so far, we have spent $800 and sadly I am not done yet.

I have 7 kids to buy for (5 mine + 2 nephews) and then I mail my Mom a box and buy gifts for 6 adult family members...plus food for all day Christmas!
