My hubby: 0
Me: right before bed, 2-3 times a night, right when I get up
(That is the main reason I hate camping!)

36, none. Does he have an annual physical? Enlarged prostates are not unheard of that early. It's only a pill for a fix. Then again, if it's diabetes, he seriously needs to get treatment.

Off to the doc and no argument, young man!

What is this eight hours of sleep you speak of?

Unless you are under the age of 10, nothing wakes me up. He could pee every five minutes for all I know.

None. Ever. And he's 57. Even when he drinks. Swear to God he's got a 50 gallon bladder.

Course I pee 2 or 3 times at night. Sigh.

I think a more important thing to be asking is "what is waking my husband up at night that he then is peeing?"

My husband snores... a lot. He does have some sleep apnea, so when he pauses in breathing & snores deeply to open the passage again, it wakes him up.

Our bodies change as we get older to allow us to sleep through the night & not be woken up by our bladders (think of kids who eventually outgrow bedwetting - some take longer than others, but no one is wetting the bed @ 18!!) However, when we wake up (even a little) our normal body functions begin to awaken also & we need to use the bathroom.

Now, if you've been drinking a lot before bed (booze or not) you may wake up to use the bathroom... there is a point where the bladder just cannot ignore the laws of physics & it's either "empty or bust".

So, if your husband is a serious snorer, he should be checked for sleep apnea, which can be a serious condition requiring treatment. If not, he may want to run it past his doctor.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head that might be the issue is that his body is not concentrating its urine enough, causing him to void his bladder more frequently. And if he is refraining from drinking an hour or 2 before bed, his body probably should able to go through a standard 6-8 hours of sleep without waking him.

In the meantime, try to figure out what he is doing when he gets up that wakes you up & see if that can be changed! What a bummer...

FYI - we got molded memory foam pillows recently & my husband's snoring is WAY reduced!! =-)

I'm surprised how many people say they don't get up to pee at night.

You think twice is too much for a 36 year old?
No offense, but I'm not sure what that means.
He's obviously potty trained, yes?

Holding your pee is not good for you whether you're a male or a female.
I cannot sleep if I have the feeling that I have to pee. I'd rather get up and relieve myself.

My husband was prone to kidney stones and I have been prone to kidney infections to the point where there was blood in my urine. Both are extremely painful. You go through that a few times and you learn to pee when you know you need to.

Are you worried about his health or the fact that you can't easily fall back to sleep?
You can run it by the doctor, but like I said, maybe it's just a matter of him not being able to sleep through the urge to pee until morning.

It's only my opinion, but I think if he has to pee, he has to pee.
I HATE having to get up and pee in the night, but I know I can't sleep soundly and try to hold it at the same time.

Maybe that's all it is for him too.

Best wishes.

Zero. Maybe once on a rare night. As for me, I'm the same... sometimes once in the middle of the night but most nights not at all.

46 - probably 1-2 times and he does sleep an average of 8-9 hours. We have separate bedrooms so he could get up 20 times a night and it wouldn't bother me. Seriously - consider separate bedrooms if you have enough space in your house. It makes for a very happy marriage for both of us. I'm a night owl, he's an early bird and he snores loud enough to wake the dead if he's not using his apnea machine.

My immediate thought about your husband was that he should get checked for diabetes and also have his prostate checked. Does he urinate very frequently during the day? If he's not sure what "frequently" would be for a man his age -- that's a reason to go to the doctor, to find out what the doc would consider OK and what would be a red flag.

Does your husband seem thirsty all the time? That's a warning sign of diabetes. And you do not have to have it in the family to develop it, so don't let him say, "Oh, nobody in my family's diabetic so I'm sure I'm not either." Sometimes there is NO other early sign but thirst and the consequent urination. Better to check early and be sure than to wait and be sorry.

Another explanation may be: Does he drink any liquids after dinnertime? Consuming liquids close to bedtime is inevitably going to mean he needs to get up and pee in the night.

If his getting up is costing you sleep, you really need to talk to him about this seriously. I hope he doesn't treat it like a joke. People who fall back asleep instantly (my husband is like that too) just do not get what it's like to be awakened and then lie there awake, only to drift off and suddenly be awakened again. He probably sleeps right through it when YOU get up in the night so he has no idea what it feels like to lose sleep this way. I am a very light sleeper and I know it really affects my quality of life if I go night after night waking up and then not getting back to sleep. Of course if he needs to go, he must, but if he is doing things that are causing him to go iin the night, like drinking fluids in the evening, he could stop that -- out of consideration for his wife.

You're going to get a wide range of "normal" here.
I have gone through phases where I get up EVERY NIGHT to pee, around 3:00 am, but these phases come and go. I haven't had that happen for a while, I'm 44. Oh, and I seem to need to "go" more if I've had alcohol, if that matters (?)
My husband, 53, hardly EVER needs to go in the night.
Frequent urination seems to be more of a female issue, if it were my husband I would encourage him to go to the doc, just to be safe.

Zero.

My dad, on the other hand, has a history of kidney stones and hasn't been able to sleep through the night without peeing since he got the first one over 40 years ago.

While it's possible it's a medical problem, it's also quite possible that he just has a smaller bladder and needs to pee. Probably not a big deal.

I my get up 6 times in 6 hours when I've had a bad day and drank a lot of water (my drink of choice).

When I don't drink a lot of water then twice per night and maybe once. Its a cause for celebration if I sleep through the night and don't have to get up.

I've done this frequency for decades. Each person has their own frequency.

Good luck to you and yours.

Never. My husband is 41.

I used to get up 1 x per night after having my kids but I then I had my urethra stretched (I was having major bladder spasms throughout the day and night). Now I never get up. Took the urologist less than 5 minutes to fix.

Your husband should go to the doctor.

Wow! I am very surprised by the number of people saying this is a medical issue. Some people need to pee at night. Some don't. This does not mean their is a medical problem. Sheesh!

I could not agree more with Shane. I am prone to kidney stones, and my urologist said, "I don't care how many times you have to get up to pee. Drink water!!!"

I usually get up once - sometimes twice, if I've been a good girl about my water. My husband gets up twice, I think. I don't usually notice. He has always been this way. He has a small bladder, I guess. Even when I was 9 months pregnant he had to stop on road trips more often than I did.

What makes you say that is too much? Is this new for him? I would only be concerned if there had been a change. Otherwise, I would just accept it as physically normal for him.

My husband didn't get up at night at all until after he turned 45.
Besides being checked for diabetes, he should have his prostate checked out.
Some guys do start having prostate trouble in their 30's while many won't have issues until their 40's or 50's.
He should have it checked out to rule out the possibility of prostate issues (inflammation, enlarged or cancer).

My husband never gets up to pee at night. If he did I would think he was sick or something. He also drinks a soda before bed. I have no idea how his bladder can hold that long. I, on the other hand, get up 2X per night. Once at 2:30 am and once at 5:00 am - like clockwork. Totally weird how it's the same time everynight.

My husband doesn't get up at all. He might go if he wakes up for the baby and is awake for more than a couple of minutes, when his bladder "wakes up." He will not wake up just to pee though.

Your husband can always ask a doctor if this is something normal, but at 2 times a night, I wouldn't think this is too ar out of the norm.

I don't think it's normal for a healthy adult to wake up in the middle of the night to pee. I don't wake up (unless I'm pregnant) and my husband has never woken up in the middle of the night to pee. I think a 36 year old waking up twice should see a urologist.
