How Exactly Do You Use a Swim Diaper

This may seem like a very ignorant question, but I'm wondering what it is I'm supposed to do with a swim diaper. Do I use it in place of the regular diaper... do I use it over the regular diaper. Any brand preferenes? We've started swim lessons, and the boys need to wear them, plus we are going to the dells next weeks for vacation. Any input would be great... I'd hate to be the mom that the ladies in the locker room talk about after I leave. Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU!!!! I feel much better after having read your responses. I had used one previously on one of the boys, but we never made it to the pool, so I just left the thing on him for the ride home. Needless to say, he peed all over himself and the carseat... poor guy! Now I know it wasn't just me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can now have a plan for how to tackle the dells... moms always need a plan, right? I really appreciate the advice!

Hi M.,

We used the Little Swimmers also and then pulled plastic pants over them, then the swim trunks over that. No, they don't hold pee at all, but a little pee never hurt anyone in a chlorinated pool. These diapers are mainly used to keep the poop from coming out.

Have fun!

I've only seen little swimmers as well, and used them with my son in our pool all last summer. It goes on just like a pull up diaper all by itself. The only difficult task is figuring out which side is front and back. For boys the liner which goes up higher is the front. My hubby put it on backwards and well...we should have just let him go naked...LOL. I wouldn't know if certain pools have preferences about plastic covers, because we only have really been swimming in our own pool, but I would call ahead to ask about their policies

Just like a regular diaper (or pull-up). You can also use them outside the water, but they don't hold as much liquid. Some pools require you to also use plastic training pants over the diaper to protect the pool from leakage of anything solid. I've never seen any brand other than Little Swimmers, so I don't know about that.

Our community pool sells the plastic pants, but you can also get them online (Gerber brand) and we used them later on over underwear for potty training, too. But if your pool doesn't, I wouldn't worry too much about it - I don't think my kids ever pooped while in the water. Just don't feed them right before swimming.

We just use the Lil Swimmers by themselves.

Some pools sell washable ones
the disposable ones put on like pull ups but like at the dells you may want to use a reg diaper until you are in the pool area because they do not hold pee like a reg diaper and if its a long walk to the pool well you don't want to be peed on

I use the Jewel store brand. I've bought the pampers ones but they are so much more expensive and don't work any better. Anyways, you use a swim diaper in place of a regular diaper but make sure to put it on just before leaving the locker room. The swim diaper holds in #2 basically. If they have to go #1, the diaper is not going to hold it in. Do not use a regular diaper - they just fill with water and expand and turn into a big jelly mess. If you child has loose stools, the swim diaper won't hold it in. You'd be better off skipping the lesson if they have been sick and might have diahrea. They are a must though! Hope this helps! We were a member to a gym with a pool for a while and now live in a condo building with an indoor pool. I keep the swim diapers stocked up!
