How Early Can You Give a Baby a Probiotic

I'm asking this for a friend. M is 6 months old and has been on antibiotics in the past and now is having lots of problems. M's mom asked her doctor about giving M a probiotic and she said that M was to young.
Now most of the time I listen to doctors, but I think that's a bit on the silly side. I was under the impression that everyone needs probiotics especially after an anti-biotic. I am thinking maybe the doctor thought that it was to early to give M yogurt.
What do you think?

**I told my friend B to give her a powdered probiotic and I'm thinking the doctor is thinking of yogurt.
Thanks all!!

What can I do next?

Florastor Kids is OK to use after 2 mos.

PS: I've given my DD a priobiotic at 6 mos. It was the only thing that got her through the norovirus.

6months old is too young?!?! I'm not at all qualified to give medical advise, beyond being a mommy, but our pediatrician had my son taking probiotics at 3 months. Horrible ear infections & antibiotic gave sona yeast infection on his butt!!! Would result in open wound rash by 3rd poop after antibiotic. Didn't happen w/ probiotic given at same time. Get the ones in green box behind pharmacy counter in fridge. Ped. said all are not created equal, and this is the one he recommended. Comes in granual packets & can go strait into milk.

My baby was probably 4-5 months when she was having some issues (pretty sure it was from me from having a c-section and getting antibiotics because I was having yeast issues and baby was nursing...which didn't colonize her well since I was messed up from the antibiotics, according to my dr). Anyway, my dr told me to give her probiotics. I found some infant kind and gave it to her on a spoon. It was powdered, but I just put a couple drops of water in it, mixed it up, and gave it. I probably did it three times a day or something.

So...apparently there are differing opinions on it among doctors! I had no hesitation giving it to my baby. and it helped.

Yogurt made with natural cultures like Strauss or Bulgarian or Nancy's has all the probiotics you need to transition off antibiotics and make natural bacterium and enzymes in your digestive tract.
I tell you what dumb is: keeping a child on antibiotics as a prophelatic method.
I NEVER listen to doctors. I had my hard lessons doing so. I go to them for a diagnosis and then do alternative medicine. Allopaths have no cures. Ok is you break your arm they can set it. Your body does the healing. I use homeopathy, herbs, chiropractic, acupunture and whole natural foods.

Hi, this is her friend B that has the question. Here is a little more info about her situation. Thanks that was helpful. :) She hasn't been on any anti-biotics. I was on an anti-biotic right after she was born from a uterine infection and was breast feeding, and that is what gave her the thrush. She's been on plenty of meds since then for reflux and constipation though. She isn't eating rice cereal actually because of the constipation issues, but there is rice starch in the reflux formula she drinks. So, I can't feed her rice cereal or it will back her up even more. I've read and been told that she is too young for yogurt just yet. I can try the powdered kind in her milk or baby food though. Would she need it if not on an anti-biotic? I know her formula has pre-biotics on it. I am not sure what the difference is there. But, when I asked the dr about pro-biotics when you mentioned it before to help with her digestive issues, he said she was too young to be on it. But, she was only 4-5 months at the time. Maybe it's changed now that she is on solids? I will ask him again. Thanks for the info. That was really helpful.

I am not sure when I first used probiotic but you can get it over the counter or in a health food place and it is powder that you would add to an infants milk or food. I know I have had to use it on both my boys. I wouldn't give the yogurt this young but the probiotic powder I believe is okay bu tyou might read the bottle. I will say it is very spendy. Good luck.

If she is breastfeeding then the breastmilk acctually has all the good bacteria the baby needs. i don't know if the powdered probiotic can be harmfl or not, but yogurt may be fine, the proteins are broken down more than in regular milk so it is not nessesary to wait until 12 months to feed a baby yogurt.

If it was my kiddo, I would have given them some plain or vanilla yogurt as soon as they started the antibiotic. Use your mommy gut instinct!! Just know when to stop, like if the baby starts having an allergic reaction. She should be taking some rice cereal and baby foods by now anyway, I say go for it and make the poor thing more comfortable!! Hope the babe feels better :)

Some of the cereals that are made for babies have the DHA and probiotics in them, so I would think if M is 6 months old, he/she should be eating cereal by now, give that to M. It could be that the doctor is thinking of Activia or yogurt, which may have some of the artificial sweeteners in them.

Babies are not ready for Probiotics until at least a year old! The bacterias that make a probiotic effective is just dangerous for them. Their litttle bodies cannot handle it yet and they could get very sick. Yogurt in particular is a dairy product and makes it especially hard for babies to digest on top of the danger of the bacteria.

I would have your friend wait until a year and certainly not give her a supplement powder. Those things are all intended for adult consumption not a tiny little body. Not to mention the fact that I really believe that naturally created probiotics are far better than some powder created in a lab with God-knows what kind rules and/or chemicals are used to make it.

Hope this helps!

My daughter has to be on low dose systemic antibiotics every day for urinary reflux to prevent infections and her doctor recommended starting probiotics at the same time we started the antibiotics. She was 3 months old when we started them. There is a special kind made for use in infants that we used until she was a year old (BioGaia) and now she just eats yogurt every night with her antibiotics.

My doctor told me to put my baby on probitotics at 2 weeks old.
It's called Bio Gaim and you ask the pharmacist for it without a prescription. It's pricey but the doctor said it helps for digestive issues. On an older baby I would just give yogurt.

I think that doctors worry because babies have a hard time digesting milk products. If she does yogurt try yo baby by stonyfield farms which has a probiotic in it maybe a teaspoon or two. Children usually do not drink milk until they are a year old.
