How Does the Name HUGO Sound?

Hello!

We will have a boy at the end of July and it's a lot more difficult to find a great boy's name than a girl's. We happen to be of French origin, so we like to pick French names for our children that can be pronounced in English too. We don't want to rely on people we tell face to face because sometimes they won't tell you what they really think of a name.
So Mamas, please tell me, how does Hugo sound to you?
Thanks for your help.

My son's name is Hugh, the Irish version of Hugo. I think Hugo is a fantastic name and it works in many languages. As with any name, though, if you ask a bunch of people you will get mixed reviews. I particularly like this name because it is not common in the US.

There are many people, like me, who have never seen the show LOST. When he is old enough for that association to matter, that character will no longer be in the collective memory.

What do YOU think of the name?

I really like it. It does happen to be the guy from Lost, but I like him too. :) I imagine it's going to be a pretty popular name now.

Hi F.,

I love the name. It's strong and masculine. That's missing in many of our little boys these days.....I don't watch Lost so my mind didn't go there at all....

Congratulation on your little one whatever you decide to name the little man!

Well, I LOVE the name and I say it sounds European. However, what is most important is if YOU love the name regardless of it's origin. Hugo is a popular name in Spain so maybe that's why some say it sounds Spanish.

The meaning of the name Hugo is "Mind, Heart, Spirit"
How can you go wrong with that regardless of it's origin??!! =-)
I say name your baby boy Hugo. It's what your heart wants.

Hi, I will be honest well I am mexican and I can tell you that name is very special. It describes a strong and smart boy. We use it usually on our first boy, well they represent the new generation and it is believe he will be the strong, carring leader. So its really up to you but go with your feelings.

I immediately thought "French!" when I read the title of your post. With your heritage it sounds perfect.

I know what you mean about picking boy names. We ended up going through the family tree and picked a name from 1789. :)

Hugo is a French name... but many think of it not being of French origin and how to pronounce it differs, depending on the country of origin.
How about:
Antoine
Etienne
Armande
Arsene
Remy
Sebastien
Nicolas

Good luck,
Susan

that sounds like a Latin (Hispanic) name. not really french.
ps yes it is a french name as well but if the child will be raised in the States he will be taken of hispanic descent. i know of a french writer, hugo... but can't remember the last name but his books are awesome. i assume in french the H wouldn't be pronounced. how about Pascal :) (or Pasqual)
