The week before my period, it's all I can do to function. I have no energy at all, and mentally I'm scattered a mile around. I've tried vitamins, extra sleep, walking, caffeine...nothing seems to help. Help!!!!

So What Happened?

I do have pmdd. Take prozac for that. Had some chocolate today. Took a nap, crave caffeine...take a b vitamin complex. Bananas work in place of chocolate...will look into trying to walk more during pms, but really can't concentrate, focus, etc.

Keep the ideas coming, really do appreciate them.

Hi B.,
I agree about the exercise.
But you probably didn't have the right vitamins. Most are very poorly formulated. I used to have horrible pms, migraines, cysts in the breasts, and long periods (10 days). With the right nutrition program that all went away. No pms, migraines and periods went to 3 days. Later I sailed through menopause with only a few minor hot flashes. All the other women in my family have had hysterectomies because they were so miserable.
Let me know if you want more info.

It's sounds like you could benefit from some progesterone cream. I get a perscription strength from my doctor; however, you can buy natural progesterone over the counter 20 mg. I rub in on my arm or inner thigh twice daily. I start it 3 days after I ovulate and use it for 10 days. It's made an amazing difference in how I feel and function. I suffer badly from PMS. My marriage has suffered from PMS. It's very debilitating for me. I take 50mg and I get it at a compound pharmacy. My husband noticed a huge difference in me after I started the cream.
I understand and sympathize deeply with you!!!

I noticed that several have recommended that you eat chocolate. Yes, you're craving chocolate; however, this means you're low in magnesium!!! I also take a vitamin supplement called OPTIVITE - for Pre Menstral Tension. The pharmacy at Walmart or Sams can order it for you. It's loaded with B vitamins and it has magnesium in it. This is one this that I really noticed with the vitamins is that I don't crave chocolate or salt anymore when I'm pmsing! The salt makes me bloated which makes me feel horrible!!

HI B. from another B.-- few of us

I kind of agree with Victoria-- you might not have found the right nutrition that works with your body........believe me.....at edging 50 now I had tons of issues with that over the years- and things changed as I changed and aged so you have to keep finding what works and what your body is missing. I'd say water is the biggest helper-- the more you drink the less you bloat and flush away the junk- backwards. And there are great nutritional products many use-- if you want to email me at ____@____.com I can tell you more of some I know as a wellness coach. Many have that tired I need a pick me up-- then you have to take it easy and also take healthy stuff to help get through it-- and seriously-- exercise really helps with that even though it seems counter intuitive. Many solutions other than natural remedy supplements, are counter intuitive to what you would think to you.
Know you're certainly not alone.. and knowing it and letting others around you know so they understand, helps too.

i am on BC. i know exactly when i am getting them. i start that week (two days before they're 'due') with 2 motrins a day. whether i have a headache or stomachache or not, doesn't matter, i take two motrins in the morning. for some reason, while it does not get rid of wanting to sleep and being tired, it gets rid of irritability. otherwise, i am a bear.

exercise, exercise, exercise! I know you said you have no energy, but the more you get that blood flowing the better. If you make it a habit, it may fend of future PMS symptoms. Don't forget to stretch a ton and drink lots of water!

When I am going thru PMS and Perimenapause.. chocolate worked for me. Not an over abundance but just a little bit everyday. Of course I am a chocoalcholic. They say that chocolate can help the endorfins that sometime interfer with normal hormal process. Had a hysterectomy and while the first few months were bad, I started eating a tad of chocolate everyday and it helped immensly. I have no menapause symptoms at all. I do try and walk 3 times a week and drink a lot of water but I swear this two little pieces of chocolate everyday is what helps me.

Check out "The Diet Cure" by Julie Rossi. I'm working with the supplements she suggests for some other health issues, but I've already noticed a decrease in my PMS symptoms (which was a bonus)!

With me and PMS... i get real irritable. Super irritable. I still do have tons of energy though.
But for PMS.... I take Hyland's Calms Forte- for adults. It helps a lot.
Or, I take Natural Calm.:

Maybe take vitamin B-12 pills?

And yes though, exercise really helps. If you can even do like 15 minutes worth... that might be a big help.

good luck,
Susan

I experienced that for years, and even with exercise to boost my energy , I had had enough, so I asked my doctor to help me. She diagnosed me with PMDD, and I take medication 7 days out of the month, and it is working wonders for me. I'm nicer to my husband and children, and I am functioning like I do the other 3 weeks of the month!
