How Do You Really Clean a Pacifier?!

We don't have a dishwasher, so I have been washing my son's pacifiers every night in boiling water. No matter what I do (twist, dry, shake), there is always some "yucky" water left inside the pacifier when I am done (he likes the MAM pacifiers). What do you do? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I got a good laugh at myself- I have definitely shown myself to be a first-time mother with this question!! The suggestion to twist, then shake the Mam pacifiers was the ticket for getting the water out of the pacifier nipple (don't you just love those engineers?). And I'll stop sweating the rest. Thank you so much for sharing...

Have you tried the Medela steam clean bags? They are great for sterilizing bottles, breast pump parts, pacifiers - they are a huge timesaver! They have them at BRU and Target - I think it is around $7 for a package of 5 reusable bags.

I don't see how putting them in the dishwasher is disgusting, and the previous post is right about not boiling plastic- BUT what we did when I worked in an infant room (five years ago) was boil the water in the microwave, soak them in the water once it stops boiling (I don't remember how long we soaked them, though), then spray them with bleach water, then rinse them, then air dry them (we did this with all of the pacifiers and nipples). With my own daughter's I just used hard surface sanitizer and then rinsed it. And I didn't do it every day- I have a theory that the ammount that Americans oversanitize leads to weaker immune systems (and just for the record my daughter has not yet had an infection)- but that is neither here nor there.

Here is how you get the water out. Squeeze the rubber part and shake it at the same time. All the water comes out. My husband (the engineer) figured that one out.

I also bought a lot because it is always a crisis when you are missing one.

Hi there. Im going to be a new mom in just about 5 weeks or so but wanted to wash all his pacifiers and bottles first before he uses them. What I thought was effective and didnt leave any water or misty leftovers was I just rinsed everything under warm water and put it in a bottle steamer/ sanitizer I got a Target. It works wonderfully. I have not tried letting the items I steamed dry in there but what I did after the steaming was done I put everything on a paper towel to dry. Worked perfectly.

get a new one!! get a ton of them & throw them away when they are dirty. don't boil plastic things or put them in the microwave, it releases cancer causing agents.

we never cleaned it that thoroughly, but Matt is number 5 in our famiily - he was a binky boy - he had one in each hand and one in the mouth!!!
We used MAMs also, don't worry about it - he will be helping you in the yard one day and eating worms and snails. They are much yukkier than a dirty binky

Rather than advice, I'll give you a joke...

First baby: boil the pacifier
Second baby: rinse the pacifier
Third baby: blow the dust off the pacifier
Fourth baby: let the dog lick the pacifier clean

Don't stress! Babies eat bugs, grass, and dirt and do just fine. It's impossible to create a germ-free environment...you turned out okay, and so did your parents, grandparents, etc.

Good luck!

You are doing the right thing. I have never heard of any other way to clean them. Bring them to a boil, and there should be no problem. Most people I've known, throw the pacifier into the dish water... DISGUSTING!!!

I clean mine in hot soapy water first, then boil it. I also squeeze the soft part and get water inside then empty it. It is a bit time consuming, but they seem really clean. I just buy alot and clean them at one time. Good luck. : )
