My first thought was A lah nah, if parents wanted A lay na they would have spelled it Elena or Elana but I see the majority here have a different idea. I think if you pick an unusual name OR unusual spelling you have to expect there will be pronunciation problems

I agree that it's ah-LAY-nuh... My DD's name is Alina (ah-LEE-nuh) and people keep calling her Alayna.... you are right it does get old when said wrong consistently.

If you want to break it down phonetically, the 2nd vowel (as the 'y' is in this case) makes the 1st vowel long... so technically it would be the ah-LAY-nuh version. If it's supposed to be ah-LAW-nuh, there shouldn't be the 2nd vowel.

i agree with sandy in that deliberately chosing a "creative" name is going to guarantee that people will mispronounce and or misspell it. you don't say whether this is your daughter, but if it is, the person who made the decision shouldn't really be the one "going nuts" when people mispronounce a unique name. i'd say the person who was named that, is the only one who has the right to get frustrated - she didn't have a choice. and unfortunately, she can't really blame the mis-pronounc-ER, but rather the frustration will probably go back on the person who gave her the frustrating name. just saying!

i actually think it's a really pretty name, for the record. but with some of these more creative names that are so "in" right now, you have to accept a certain amount of confusion.

the "Y" in it makes me think this should be "uh- LAY -nah" hope that's right! if not, sorry! for the record, i don't see what the big deal is, if i mispronounce someone's name, i'd hope they would politely correct me. i don't WANT to say it wrong, it's an honest mistake. not like someone would mispronounce it deliberately...

We stuck with traditional names AND spellings, since we have a messed up last name and it's horrible when people try to pronounce it.

My SIL named her daughter Sage, but spelled it Saige. People pronounce it Sai-e-gee. It does look Indian, especially with their last name.

Hello, I think it would be Ah-lane-ah. However, with the way people are spelling names these days, it could be something else. But, that's the way I read it. I did English as a Second Language with students from all over the world. The one thing I wanted to be sure to do was get their names right.
Good luck.
