How Do You Improve Your posture...any Tricks or Success Stories?

I injured my back over the weekend and my chiro exam revealed that, among other things, stand with my head jutted a bit forward and therefore have no curve in my neck. The chiro helped me to stand "properly" and boy does this feel unnatural! For one thing, I feel like with my head pulled back this far, I have to lift my chin a bit to avoid having a double chin. Then, because my chin is lifted a bit, I feel like I'm looking down at people and things and that anyone shorter than me is looking straight up my nostrils LOL. O checked in the mirror and really it's not at all weird looking but it feels that way to me.

So...has anyone successfully improved her (or his) posture? What helped you to make the change permanent and how long did it take? Any tips? I have adjusted the seat in mirrors in my car to force myself to sit up straighter and can probably make adjustments to my monitor and desk chair at work that will help, but what about when just sitting or standing?

I have always had great posture walking but sitting not so much. I had a car accident a month ago and the exercises and adjustments my chiropractor are doing has made it more uncomfortable to have bad posture. Pretty much he fixed my back the rest followed.

It took about two weeks before it was uncomfortable to slouch down in my desk.

I have this same issue and need to focus on it. A long time ago someone told me the trick of visualyzing a string coming out of the top of your head and pulling you up. I notice when I do that my posture does improve. I also had a chiropractor once have me use a slanted wege foam pillow. I was to lie down on my back with this under my upper back even with the top of my shoulders and with my head hanging off. This is so difficult! I was supposed to work up to 5 minutes in this position and I'm not sure I was able to do so. Then he went out of practice, I started seeing a different chiropractor and stopped doing this. As I'm sitting here I realize I need to raise my monitor. Yikes, a lot to consider.

My husband curved so much when we were dating, I was on top of him constantly telling him to straight up, pulling his back back.
A few slaps on the back sometimes too, jajaja.
Not sure for how long but he got use to walk straight for a while now.
So besides all the good advice you got here I would also advice you to ask family and close friends to remind you (without the slaps of course).

I've had to work on this, too - for a long time. Yoga and core exercise will help.

Keep in mind that you body is used to the way you stand now, so any other way will feel unnatural. The flip side of this is that if you feel idiotic when you're standing straight, you're probably doing it right.

The more you stand properly, the more you'll be aware of what "properly" is. Check yourself whenever you can. With some practice, when you shift position you'll automatically think, "How am I sitting? How am I standing? Where are my shoulder blades? Where is my neck? Where it my tummy?" It will become a habit. You're training your brain, as well as your body, about how to stand properly.

I have no answers, but I have the same problem. My last physical informed me that I have a twisted spine... Yikes. I did notice though after doing balance ball exercises and yoga for a week or 2, I was able to pop my own back (can only hope that's a good thing), now if I can just get back in the habit.

But I do think a large part of it is practice and reminding yourself.

High heels when walking - seriously even if it is just around the house for an hour or so while you get used to them There are comfortable ones out there and you can start with a kitten heel or wedge for every day but I have always had good posture and my mom says it's because she tought me to wear heels at an early age! Literally I was in 4" heels during "play time" as a preschooler and have always been a lover of heels.

I use a rolled up towel and do relaxation techniques on the floor. The towel is firm enough to support the neck and help that curve.

I do door pushups, you stand in a narrow door way and put a hand on each door jam. Then lean slowly forward. It resembles a standing push up. The rib cage opens up from the front and the whole torso moves better. After doing a few of these I can breath much easier.

I use a thick bed pillow, tuck it under my chin like I am going to put a pillowcase on it, then press down to hold it. It is like doing a deep long stretch in the whole neck and upper back.

Get a custom fitted corset. You'll stand up straight because you don't have a choice LOL

Seriously though, as much as they can be uncomfortable, it'll actually give your back some support while you re-train it to stand/sit straight.

Try replacing your desk chair with an exercise ball. It will cause you to engage your core muscles to keep seated.

I recently got orthopedics because of flat feet and that had really improved my posture. A good strengthening exercise regime with weights always helps me too.
