I've had that happen three times (no IVF though.) The first time I miscarried at 9 weeks, the second time the twin just vanished, maybe reabsorbed, the third time we found the twin in my fallopian tube at 12 weeks! I know that ectopic pregnancies can be more common with IVF, too, so they should probably keep an eye on you just in case.

Its possible that your body thinks you are having twins but you aren't.

To be safe, I wouldn't go purchase any of the big stuff until after your ultrasound and an official head count.

Sometimes, at 9 weeks it is hard to distinguish twins heartbeats. The heartbeat isn't always strong, that early. They will be able to tell, at your next appointment. Keep in mind...fertility Doctors always have the goal of successfully making your pregnant with a single child. You are very early in your pregnancy and big preparations are not necessary, just yet. Hang in there until your next appointment and you can start preparing then, if you'd like. They will hear the heartbeat stronger and see more on the ultrasound. Good luck.

Congrats! They will do an in depth ultrasound at about 20 weeks. If you have twins they will know at this point, there will be no way to miss it because the babies will be big enough to see details. This is when you can tell if you are having a boy or girl and they make sure everything is developing normally. If you've only had the transvaginal ultra sound so far, the one at 20 weeks is the one where they place the wand on your belly and you have to drink 16 oz of water about 30 min before.

Good luck!

First off, congratulations on Baby... What a joy to have your first IVF work. Now you need to just relax and enjoy your pregnancy. With IVF, the chances of having twins is higher than normal conception, but the chances of having a singlton far out-weighs that to have twins with only two embryos implanted. This is the reason that some fertility specialist implant "crazy numbers"; because the chance of them taken is not very high. So with 2 implantations, you are truly BLESSED to get 1 of them on the first round.
Know that the US done before 6 weeks really do not show much; but the 6 week ones are amazing. You then get your heart beat & yok sac and these are HIGHLY visable. That is the reason dates are best determine at the 6-8 week US. Your levels will be high. ALL IVF women have high levels. It has to do with the medication. So your levels are NO indication, they are only a great responds to you being pregnant.
So it is my belief that you are carrying a singleton pregnancy. That is the problem with IVF couples.... You have such a long journey prior to pregnancy that you know far longer than the natural gestation woman and therefore it makes it a longer pregnancy. The US are far many in number the first few months and when that tapers down and you are treated as a "normal pregnancy", that change is hard to accept. As as result, I think one many times stress over things that a "natural gestation" women does not and as a result a lot of unnecessary stress endorphins are release into your body. This is not good for you or baby.
If the US showed one, then be very tickled pink over the one and just be preeparred to be a mom. PLEASE do not miss these early days as you will never get them back. You will get another routine US between 18 & 20 weeks. If you are pregnant with twins, this is when the average woman finds out; just go with it then. You can not prepare for twins too much prior to then anyway. Also know a doptone is NEVER an indicator if you are having twins. It only picks up on one heart beat at a time anyway. It is my suggestion; stop the desire for extra test and just do the happy dance that you were blessed with this beautiful baby and beautiful opportunity that many do not get, especially on round 1! ENJOY these days and enjoy your last "free days" as a couple..... Congratulations!

I got pregnant with twins naturally....why in the world would you want twins? Anyways...its beyond me why people make that statement but I get it all the time and I look at them like they are crazy! Believe me it is a complete joy having twins and they light up my life each and every single day in so many ways. There are pro's and there are definite con's to it as well-lol! They are a mess!
So my story was when I took a pregnancy test I thought I was on my period but the reason I took it was because it wasn't "normal" for me. Thinking the test would be negative for sure but within seconds I had a positive result. From this point I was considered 2 weeks along. I went in for blood work and more blood work and then even more blood work. I had bruises up and down my arms I am sure people thought the worst. Then eventually they wanted me to come in for a sonogram because my HCG levels were not going up like they should have been and they thought I might have an ectopic pregnancy. At 4 weeks I went in for my sonogram and they found two sacs and they told me to wait 7-10 days and come back for another sonogram to ensure that both were "viable" -I went back and obviously they both were viable. I was very early on when they detected it and I have heard of a twin "hiding" and its possible but you could ask them to do blood work again at this point because usually with twins at this point the levels would indicate to be so. It is very common from what I was told that when you conceive multiples that the levels are actually lower and don't automatically double/triple?? in numbers at first but later. I mean the best way to tell really is through sonogram really but I have heard of it happening where one tends to "hide". Actual size means nothing. I was a very skinny small framed woman....people who knew me couldn't believe how big I was however strangers that found out I was having twins told me no way because I didn't look that big. My babies were 6 lbs and then 5 lbs 10 ounces. I felt like a cow.....but I think most women do no matter how many they have inside. As the baby grows though surely they could no longer "hide" as well -lol! However its possible just like some people go to find out the sex but the baby is too modest to show their "stuff" off. LOL!

Most couples have anywhere from 2-4 embryos transferred. The higher the number of embryos, the greater chance you have of becoming pregnant. If you have a group of 100 women who do IVF, about 35 of them will become pregnant. Of those 35, about 7 or 8 of those women will have multiples. That is why so many women choose to have more embryos implanted rather than less. It surprises me that your doctor did not discuss this with you beforehand.

Hang in there until you can get more conclusive information. It is very likely that you will have more ultrasounds in the future and can get a better idea of what is going on.

Congratulations to you!

Can't believe you only had to do IVF once! Wow! Congratulations. Glad you are feeling blessed.

Everything in life has some positives and some negatives. It is up to you how you respond to those. It sounds like you are now enjoying the pregnancy. It is good practice for how you want to model for your children how to handle disappointments. Don't worry about what you don't know. If you are having twins, it will be obvious before they are born since you are getting prenatal care.
